Right click on the document, Open with Other Application. Choose Abiword from the list.

Jerry:
By offering LibreOffice we offer a complete, widely used desktop office suite. You will always find something that is 'lighter' but this operating system has more to it than offering the lightest possible software in each category. There are several factors that go into every decision regarding specific software selection. Cheers :)

riser:
Lite Software Center and Synaptic both use the official repositories.  You're good there.

AbiWord is lighter than Writer since it does not do as much.

You can change the default app by right clicking on a file in the file manager and selecting Open -> Choose...  You will then be able to select what app to use for the file type, and click the Set As Default for that to become the default.

LibreOffice comes preinstalled as this distro is made to attract Windows users to Linux, and we want to give them the tools that we think they might need. LibreOffice is a little heavy, but so is Microsoft Office, by a longshot I might add.

By default repositories, you mean Lite Software Center or Synaptic?

Is AbiWord lighter than just the LibreOffice word processor?

Can I change the default/preferred program to open documents from LibreOffice to AbiWord?
