Title: Update reminder time frame for control center.
Post by: shaggytwodope on February 21, 2016, 02:45:51 PM
Control center currently provides info to the user showing what date updates were last run, while work is being done to improve accuracy of this info. I'm asking the community what would they like it to display.

A few points would be, is just date last run ok. Or would hours/minutes/seconds be important.

Is count of new updates important? example "Updates last run 2-2-2016, 4 new updates... [Click here to update]"

I understand the majority of users may not rely on control center for this info. However I aim to make it as accurate as users would want. Any ideas are welcome in regard to this feature. Or any features for the control center are also welcome.

I personally would prefer to see the number of updates available rather than the date they were last run.

So like JUST count of amount of updates if available?

I think going by updates available would be better because just going by date it could potentially say you need to update when there are no updates available.

I admit I'm not using the Control Center. So the following is just my take on the topic without personal interest. :)

The date of the last update and the number of updates available are completely two different things, specifically what's needed in the background to gain this information. Ideally would be of course to see both information.

But, to gain the information about new updates you would have to run apt commands in the background each single time the LLCC gets started, meaning you will need to wait quite a bit, wouldn't you?

I would rather suggest to invest the time into an LLCC independent/automatic update notification/procedure that has been mentioned/asked for many times before on the forum. Some scripts/LL software that mainly cover the options mentioned in Synaptic (-> Settings -> Repositories -> Updates).

If the information of this software can also be shown in the LLCC, even better :)

My 2 c :)

Certainly don't need to use any one part of Linux Lite to have input on how to improve things. Ideas from people that make logical sense tends to motivate development. Keep the idea's coming.

I agree with avj's suggestion.

4 new updates... [Click here to update]

would be nice.

Just saw the Refresh button in your other post. If you integrate the "calculation" (= running apt commands) of the available updates into LLCC then would pressing the Refresh button also re-run the "calculation"? If so, wouldn't it cause quite some delay?

I think that the update check should be run in the background if possible and only at the start unless you add a button to check for updates, which may be a better alternative.

Indeed if we did. But we will avoid this entirely. It's just to simply redraw some basic info. The updates will need to be managed entirely different way. Wasting bandwidth.. cpu.. and over all resources is not a dev goal for LL at this time. We leave that to the pros *cough windows cough*.

I'm with avj... Date last ran and # of available updates..

Now I typically always use LLCC for updating, don't know why - maybe its the Winders in me...
Seeing a last ran on xxxx or last updated on xxx with X new updates would be cool.. If "0" showed I knew I didn't need to click :)..

The re-sizing feature will be a nice addition for the netbook... And i wont need to update the code anymore ;)

Good Work Gentlemen!!!

If it doesn't affect performance, I would like to see a count of updates available.
