Title: Suggestions and Feedback for Forum User Friendliness
Post by: avj on September 10, 2015, 09:53:28 AM
I have a few suggestions that might be useful to forum users.

1. Make the Linux Lite logo at the top of the forum a link to the main website. There is already a home button to get back to the forum main page.

2. Make the "Help" button be a link to the online help manual, which should encourage users to use the manual more.

3. There is a broken link to the Linux Lite Shop, which took me to a search page when I clicked it.

Just thought I would mention these as some newer features like the help manual just seem to be overlooked, and I hate to see such a valuable resource not being used.

Excellent suggestions. Shop link is fixed, Help link goes to Help Manual, and for the Home button, I've made it go the the LL home page, seems more intuitive - Home = home page of LL. Well done avj :)

A link to the LinuxLite homepage for the OS, not the forums homepage ? unless i missed it

That is covered in the first reply, it is the "Home" button.

-Ah thank you for clarifying. I kept using the LinuxLite logo in the upper left.
Seems it should be reversed, "home" for forum home, and linuxlite with logo in upper left for the actual homepage for the OS. At least to me that would make more sense.

Who else thinks this? I need to have an understanding of how most people treat the current links for Home and the logo intuitively. Thank you.

For me the prominent "Feather Logo/Graphic" to LL Main Home page, and the "Home" black text to Forum home.
I think maybe it's the placement, and/or lack of text that may confuse.??

"Linux Lite Home" vs "Linux Lite Forum Home"

Either way is fine to me, but the logo taking you to the main website does seem slightly more intuitive in my opinion.  :)

I would agree... feather logo to Linux Lite Home... Home "tab" to forum home ... my .02 cents  ;D

I wish more forum users would express their opinion on this so that Jerry can get an idea of what they need versus just the opinion of just a few who took the time to speak up.

The few seem to have a similar view. I'll take that and run with it. Cheers avj :)

Maybe A survey ? I found this tread just looking around. A hard/perm link to "forum suggestions" could be helpful.
Myself, and I imagine others really appreciate the response and positive way you and Jerry have responded. GREAT COMMUNITY HERE !

I suggest Home under the logo; and Forum Home and adding Forum Help link on the line of text.

@Coastie, it now shows Forum Home, and if you mouse over the logo, it shows you where it goes to.

Also would suggest when clicking on Go Up, it go all way up to text line because when I use it is to log out.

How about a better search engine?  We used to have one for a while at the bottom (or top?) I think that seemed to be better than what we have.  I find myself searching for something every way I can think of for different wording, not finding what I want; only to write a thread and have someone mention another thread.  :-[

Maybe it's me, but we did have one that did a better one at some point and it would be nice to recover some of that functionality.

I'm having a problem with seeing the text at the top of the forum - specifically "Show unread posts since last visit" and "Show new replies to your posts" are invisible using my Firefox browser. I have to use View/Page Style and choose "No Style" to see them and then switch back to "Basic Page Style" to get the proper message layout. Checking "Welcome, Guest. Please login or register." and "Did you miss your activation email?" using Chromium the grey on black is difficult to read. Can we have white text there, please?

We've discussed this before, the actual css code is to show blue links. If we change it to say white, then all the links in threads will be almost invisible. I'll see if I can change the background as a work around.

Thanks Jerry. It is not just the links that are a problem. Other wording (e.g. "Welcome, Guest") is also. You could locally override the CSS for links using "span" as I have done here:
Code: [Select]
<a href="http://toddlergymandplayandpraise.qwkz.uk" target=blank>toddlergym<span class=blue>and</span>playandpraise.qwkz.uk</a>
where links are normally purple. The style definition used is simply
Code: [Select]
.blue { color: blue; }

Not urgent.

Regards,
Richard.

Although the forum is a little bright for my taste but not bright enough to change as I have on weather.com for example. The forum is completely readable as is to me.

I think something in Richard B's Firefox or desktop theme is overriding the set forum theme. I always use a dark desktop theme and various gray Firefox theme and neither have any effect on this forum. There are Firefox add-on that can change the appearance of webpages.

Good thought, but I have Firefox as it comes and have tried most desktop themes with no joy. BUT just tried Chromium and the text is white and readable. Back to Firefox and after clearing the cache got the same.

Wonderful. Thanks, Jerry.

Hi.

I cannot find a way to find my own posts on this forum. I it's not already implemented I suggest adding a new entry under the Profile drop-down menu and name it "My contents" or something like that.

Hello Sprintrdriver,

Profile>Forum Profile
Left hand side, title Profile Info>Show Posts

Or

Left of your post, click your nym, then Left hand side, title Profile Info>Show Posts

Another option for selected threads is the button on each thread "Add Bookmark" (located at the top and bottom of each thread), to load any Bookmarked thread titles, click the button "Bookmarks" at top of the page.

Hello,

Would it be possible the have the:

"Welcome, Guest, Please Login or Register"
"Did you miss your activation email?"
"Login with User Name, Password, and session length"

Text color changed from a dark grey and blue to more an more lighter color?

I am getting old and useless and it is a bit hard to see these days.

Cheers.

This has been covered previously, long story short it can't be done without messing up the rest of the Forum. Go into your Profile and choose another skin/theme if you are having problems. Thanks.

Could we have Google Authenticator? I might be asking too much...  :)
