Title: NEW Linux Lite Website - BETA
Post by: Jerry on April 17, 2015, 03:45:01 AM
The new Linux Lite website is now live, in BETA form.
The Linux Lite website is now coded for all devices including -  Smartphones & Tablets (Android & iOS) and of course personal computers.
Mobile devices outnumber personal computers 8 to 1, we can't ignore this anymore.

https://www.linuxliteos.com/beta/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/beta/)

This means that we will need as many people testing it as possible before we replace the current website with it.
To ensure we have a working, error free website, can you please report on the following issues:

- Spelling errors
- Broken or dead links
- Formatting issues (especially on Smartphones & Tablets)
- Please test on ALL browsers, Opera, FF, Safari, IE (v9+), Firefox, Chrome etc
- Please test on all OS's - Windows, Linux, Mac

Will not render properly on Windows XP with IE8 or below so please don't report this.

Constructive criticism or design ideas are welcome, although I can't promise any suggestions will be implemented if either because of the current code we have or formatting.

The following links will NOT work until we go live, this is to save me extra unnecessary code adjustments:

bugs/
screenshots/
manual/
forums/

as these link to directories on the server already established, so please don't report on these :)

Issues/Bugs to fix will be listed here:

- Page bookmark links not jumping to the right spot.

So please, get out those mobile devices and of course use your pc's to click like you've never clicked before and report ANY issues in this thread!

Thank you :)

Jerry

I find it difficult to read text because of the contrast. The background color and the text color are very similar. I mean I can read it but it requires eye straining especialy on the mobile devices. The main page is not very informative like the features page. The features page is great. I would use that as the main page or combine the contents of the two. That's just my opinion. Everything else is very well organized. Congratulations Jerry, you did a good job. :)

Where should suggestions be submitted?
Here?

On my phone (OnePlus One), the main issue is that the pictures do not totally fit the page. Also the "Menu - Tap here" button appears to be a picture (same goes for the logo). In my opinion, using a picture for a button just doesn't look that great, especially when you could just use some text and a border (like the download button). I'll look at the features page in a moment.

Hi Jerry,

On my PC's & Laptops, everything looks fine to me,
although I can see where misko is coming from regarding contrast.

On a generic 7" Tablet, generally O.K,
But the size/formating of the "LINUX LITE SIMPLE FAST FREE"
Takes up @ 40/45% of screen in Landscape,
meaning you have to start scrolling immediately.
Maybe slightly smaller, and all in 1 line.

On a small 4" Samsung smartphone,
ditto above, except it take @ 75/80% of screen.

Otherwise it would work for me,
but then again I'm not a GUI designer... :)

Here's another example of how the pictures overflow on a phone browser:

You have to zoom out to fully see the screenshots.

Other than this, the site is good!

Palm Treo Pro with Opera Mini . 2.5 inch screen. Page does not render.  Only get about 3/4 of the top "Linux Lite simple fast free menu tap here" on page and can't adjust.  Txt otherwise OK in columnar format which you can scroll down Ok. Mind you this is "OLD" technology.

The post on facebook regarding the website-Beta has a non-functional link to the forums, the address is missing a letter.

Looks OK on my laptop, on Chrome :)

Also seems OK on my Samsung Galaxy Note 1 phone. On Boat Browser :)

Will keep testing for you :)

1. Viewed on android 2.3.6 on samsung ace la fleur. No problems. Embedded videos play, links work.
Not keen on the menu tap here. Can you make it stand out more? I suspect some 20/20 visioners even may miss it never mind vision impaired.
On plus side it was my first ever net access on a mobile - way too small for me to use. But i navigated easily and once you know that menu is there - it's on all the pages in same place- you can't go wrong.

2. Ice weasel on crunchbang on dell d630. Dont like the deep scrolling. Feels like a 3 page scroll but it might just be the way the home page is horizontally divided. Saw nothing wrong with the existing home page - one page-  or the site itself to need changing tbh.

Because mobile devices, the first post clearly states why.

Palm what!? What's their market share? Not overly worried about this one. Initial post does state 'Android & iOS'. Cheers.

I will look into the contrast concern.

Thanks, I'll check this out too.

Images are formatted for landscape mode on phones and should fit fine on tablets, this is by design as it is not uncommon for people to turn their phones around to landscape when viewing websites.

In addition, double tapping on a webpage will format it correctly in portrait mode on mobile devices.

I've darkened up the font colour a few shades, the text should stand out more now.

Update.
On my Galaxy Note 1 phone, running android jellybean, on Boat Browser.
With your couple of tweaks, looking really good.

It runs mega quick, which is important, there's nothing worse than looking into a new site and it runs so slow, so you give up before you start. So no problems on this point.

Thanks for all the good work.

Because mobile devices, the first post clearly states why.

But viewed on a Dell D610 laptop it now needs *more* scrolling (: It's no major issue but that is what I meant.

I just viewed on my samsung ace android 2.3.6 again and the change to the menu works. It catches the eye on the first page to load. The fact it's there on every page makes navigation easy/ier.

Images fixed on Features page, didn't really want to resize any images but it will keep the 320pixel people happy :)

Hello!

Haven't checked everything on all devices yet, but I HAVE looked on the wide-screen laptop and on the phone. So far, I've noticed nothing major being wrong with any of it.

I HAVE noticed that on the screenshots page, there are no links to return to the rest of the site. I had to click the 'back' button.

Double-clicking DOES fix the home page photo issue. I didn't know it would do that. I imagine most other people don't have a clue about that, either. If I notice anything else, I'll amend this post...

I'm not sure 'most people' would be entirely accurate, double tapping is a relatively common phone action given how long smartphones have been around. Cheers Rob :)

Hmm, I don't usually turn my phone to landscape mode when looking at websites, maybe a hint is required to tell the user "This site looks better in landscape mode"?

All images that didn't fit, now fit except the feather at the welcome screen (this is in portrait mode).

The new menu button looks great as well!

I'm off to check on my other devices...

Looking good overall.

Noticed one issue: On desktop browser (same in both FF and Chrome) the menus with drop-down elements have a small space between the actual menu item and the drop-down elements.  This causes the drop-down to sometimes disappear as well as the drop-down top border to flash in and out.

A few small design suggestions:
1. Remove line below descriptions in the Flexibility section as there is no additional text below it (the border provides a good boundary).
2. Increase duration of image transitions by .5 or 1 sec.  Currently the page "blinks" often.
3. The images in the slider have a lot of empty space.  Have you considered a more rectangular look for them? (this would also reduce the vertical scrolling)

riser

Some good suggestions there, will see what we can do. Cheers :)

The NEW Linux Lite mobile device and tablet friendly website has gone LIVE! A HUGE thank you to all who participated in the Beta and with suggestions some of which we were able to include and change. The website will continue to evolve over time, but the hard work is done and we are now set for the future!

Thank you all very much :)

Hello, Jerry!

Even though you delegate pieces of the pie to others, I don't see how you do everything you do here and still have some semblance of a normal existence. It is nothing short of AMAZING.

To both you and year team, my congratulations...

Thanks Rob, but I'm really just a Chef who knows all the recipes off by heart ;) Spent years learning, which makes implementation quick.
