We now have 3 new profile fields for people to display, CPU, RAM, and GPU. These 3 were chosen because most issues involve these pieces of hardware. We also have to limit the list so that peoples profiles don't take up a whole page when posting :)

These can be found in: Profile, Forum Profile (scroll to bottom)
Please keep your info as concise as possible. If you have multiple computers, please list your main computer.
To get your system info, open a terminal and do:
inxi -b
Thanks to avj for the suggestion :)
I encourage all members to display these details :)

Done. Added "desktop" because it is often though that my processors are in a laptop. If I put wrong info in especially GPU, let me know.
-
Thanks Coastie, I've shortened your specs, they were quite long. Cheers.

Ok folks, I have changed ram to drop down selection, this keeps the format the same for everyone. Sorry, you'll have to re-add it :( I've made these entries compulsory on registration, saves as asking the same question 100's of times over :)

Added my main, most used PC
-
Done, I think this is a great idea. :D
You might need to tell some people how to find the info though with something like:
inxi -b
-
Updated my profile
-
All done thanks :D
-
Thank you everyone :)

Done.

Jerry,
Might I suggest Name and model number of laptop or Desktop be included to give potential users a more recognizable starting point ? I.e in my case Toshiba Sat Pro A10

Thanks. I wasn't sure what I was posting.
Corrections: System Profiler and Benchmark and other programs report I have 4 CPU's. inxi -b says I have Dual core Intel Atom CPU 330. I don't know if I have 4 CPU's or 2 Dual Core CPU's. :-\ Either way it is 4.
Also 2 GB RAM. 8)

Updated profile info.
Jerry, I left you a message on Skype. By the way if you right-click on the profile in Skype an select View Profile it will show local time. Usefull. :)

You have 2 physical cores Coastie. It's Hyper-Threading Technology that delivers two processing threads per physical core. Your CPU can run 4 threads on 2 cores at the same time.

Thank you for the suggestion newtusmaximus, however as is mentioned in the first post we have to limit the info displayed to the most essential. If we know the cpu, memory and gpu we can get off to a great start when it comes to Support for video issues, programs that consume memory and performance due to core/thread limitations on cpu's. These 3 relate in some way to many requests for support regarding hardware issues and to a lesser degree, problems with software. Cheers :)

Understood Jerry. :)
Is there a way that the Hardware Database can become more user friendly. A potential newcomer to Linux is unlikely to know their system components. They will however know their computer brand and it model number. Feeding this into the database at the moment is unlikely to help them. i.e if you type Dell for example into the search field you don't get all the dell models loaded coming up for you to scan.
Purpose to help the prospective newcomer answer the question "Will LL work for me?" i.e encourage them to give it a try
Or have I missed something?
Tks.

I know I am getting i deep water now. :-[
Does this mean I have two dual core CPU's? If I do should my specs in the profile say 2 X Dual Core Intel Atom Intel Atom 330? What is hyper-threading? What are threads? :-\

Hi Coastie,
Intel have a whole range of CPU's going from 1 core up to I now believe 72 cores.
They also implement on "some" of the CPU's a Technology called Hyper-Threading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading).
This Hyper-Threading allows 1 core to simulate 2 cores.
In your case, You have 1 Physical "Atom 330 (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+330+%40+1.60GHz&id=604)" on your board, it contains 2 CPU Cores, and it also as Hyper-Threading
So if you go into Menu > System > Resource usage it should look like you have 4 CPUS, from 1 physical ATOM 330.
Your spec is 1 X ATOM-330
This is from my top PC, 1 X 4 Core CPU with Hyper-Threading, so it looks like 8 CPU's

:o Thanks, Dave. The more I learn, the more I realize the less I know. 8)

I would suggest to be able to leave the RAM field empty. I for example have so many machines running with Linux Lite, all with different specifications, that I rather leave it empty.
Currently - if left empty - it shows 256MB, which is confusing to the least.
