Title: Making ISO of working sysytem, LL3.8 with PinguyBuilder
Post by: justme2 on August 11, 2018, 07:14:30 AM
@ringnsma mentioned PinguyBuilder in connection with LL4.0, which prompted me to try it with LL3.8
I downloaded version 4 deb package (for ubuntu 16 systems) and it installed perfectly. To me it is more intuitive than systemback and seems to generate an ISO much quicker. A live memory stick made from a PinguyBuilder generated ISO, booted correctly and included all the extra software (lots!) which I installed on the basic LL3.8 system. If continued testing proves reliable, I shall remove no longer supported Systemback and retain PinguyBuilder as my sytem backup application. All but one of my PCs are 32bit so I can't upgrade to LL4.0 and I prefer to keep them all on the same software version.

Great Justme2!

I ran into trouble with LL4. At liveusb-install it is blocked waiting for 'retreiving file 20 of 21'.
Maybe it is the version I have here. The search goes on.  ::) ;D

@rijnsma did you download the correct deb file from PinguyBuilder web site? The live system installed with no error messages but when I checked installed linux apps, they all worked OK but non of my wine apps were present. Wine was there and the included notepad ran OK but the additional wine apps would need to be re-installed. Not entirely satisfactory!

No, indeed.
I suspected something like it, years ago I had that sort of problems with Remasterme which was then suddenly no more maintained.

I found https://askubuntu.com/questions/1056498/pinguybuilder-broken-on-ubuntu-18-04

For the moment I'm back on Clonezilla, but of course that's no live-medium. So no system on usb.
The search goes on. I look into what they have on the site.

Okay, I succeeded with PinguyBuilder 5.1-7 all deb. With 5.1-8 things did not go right. But it is a very slow proces and it is not always clear when one has to 'skip' when things don't move.

Bear in mind I'm using builder v4, making an ISO seems faster than systemback but then if its leaving things out .....
I too have used clonezilla but a reliable ISO maker would be wonderful.

Yes I have v4. For years having the possibillity to make a live backup (alternative to an image) has for me been a precondition for choosing some Linux-distribution or not.
I like to be able to move my system bit for bit to another place or machine or to do things from usb-drive.
So, problem is over. And thanks for you and high regards for Pinguy! ;)
(And everybody should have it in his/her system.)

Has anyone installed their 4.x Pinguybuilder ISO onto UEFI enabled hardware yet?
