A HUGE thank you to all those who made suggestions for LL 3.0!!! I have read all of your posts, and collated them into a file that I regularly review and assess.

This thread will now close as I continue to build and test the Beta.

As well as Lite I use Xubuntu, and in 16.04  Google Earth no longer works since it  requires the package "lsb-core" which is no longer available after upgrading.

Woud it be possible to include this package in Lite3?

Re recent Chrome fiasco. Could "Install Updates" include a check that software sources set are still valid and initiate a correction if not, or at least give clear instructions as to what to do (perhaps by linking to a web page dealing with current issues)? (LL is great - thanks for all your efforts.)
Desktop: Running LL5 on second HD in ACEPC model MK1: "Mini PC 4GB RAM 64GB ROM Windows 10 Celeron J3455 Processor Mini Computer Dual HDMI, Support mSATA / 2.5 inches SSD/HDD 4K, Dual Band WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0". Don't normally use the supplied W10. Also use LL on netbook (Using xrandr to "expand" the screen) and various old laptops. NAS drive and web server hosted by Raspberry Pi's.

Since Linux Lite apparently borrowed from Manjaro for the Linux Lite Welcome Screen and maybe PCLinuxOS for the Lite Control Center, perhaps in some iteration, Lite can borrow from Ubuntu Mate's 16.04 Software Boutique to enhance Lite Software.

Creator for Lite Control Center here, never used (just googled tho) PCLinuxOS, nor seen the control center. But if your at all curious for the motivation/influence I remember using Mandriva Control Center years back and modeled after a rough memory of it. I'd be happy to answer any questions regarding Control Center and or design choices.

@torreydale,

I think to give a consistent, and different brand image, LSC should look more like LCC
Have the Software by category tabs, so it looks like in LSC.

just my thoughts...

Hi,

Here is my suggestion list, randomly ordered, i.e. not by priority:
  • unclutter/ improve menu:
    - hide entries that are covered by Lite Control Centre
    - clean and reorganize considering fundamental difference between  Settings (current user session) and System (system wide configuration, requires root permission). For example, "Lite Upgrade" is a typical "System" related activity. Nevertheless it's currently listed under "Settings".
  • power saving, screen saver, screen lock is by far not straight forward to configure and very confusing for new users (feedback I got)
  • right click on *.doc files currently shows "Open with New Document". I'd suggest "Open with LibreOffice Writer" or similar
  • Open Terminal Here (context menu of Thunar)
configuration: tick all for "selection contains"
otherwise it's not possible to open a terminal if the file listing is so long that it covers the whole window, i.e. there is no empty space to click on
  • Automatically tile windows
activate by default: Window Manger Tweaks -> Accessibilty -> Automatically tile windows when moving toward the screen edge. While window wrapping is disabled to make windows tile also on the left and right border of the screen.
-> Windows users are used to this, and it's handy :)
  • naming convention for backup folder (lite upgrade)
name of backup folder that is created within a series when upgrading should reflect the version number that has been backed up, i.e. when upgrading from 2.6 to 2.8 the backup folder should be 2.6, not 2.8
  • location of backup folder (lite upgrade)
is currently not mentioned in the GUI, and it's hidden!
  • suspend mode and look screen
after returning from suspend I can see the desktop for a while before it looks it -> privacy issue
  • search function for Help/Manual
  • being able to connect to a hidden WiFi during installation process
  • get "encrypt my home folder" during installation process working or take it out of GUI, best by leaving a note that currently it only can be done later
  • a default theme that highlights a lot more which window is active
  • a default theme that offers handle on all windows to resize them easier, like the right lower corner of thunar. This is for example not available for lxterminal? Maybe it's application related, but hopefully it at least can be improved by using a specific theme
  • the option to activate/ use guest session functionality
Any questions or need for clarification, please let me know.

Thanks for your consideration :)

I'd like to request perhaps a different User Manager.  One that allows for creating additional users with their Full Names along with their username.  Also one that allows a non-administrator user to change their own password without having to use the passwd command in a terminal.

It would be my guess that whatever kernel comes with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will be a kernel they support for the long term duration like 3.13.

Poster 'AVJ' on page 3 was asking for a kernel selection. I'd like to 2nd that one. I was reading up this morning on kernels that are coming up to EOL support. Version 3.13 seems to work very well on older machines, & with Linux Lite 3.0 due out this summer it would be nice to have a choice. If not, when the new LL comes out, a tutorial on changing the kernel to an older one would be greatly appreciated. An in place upgrade from 2.6 to 2.8 keeps the old kernel. Thanks to whoever had that idea, it was a good one.

Is there a breakdown of the 2.8 iso showing what packages take what  size.

Is there a case for pruning the iso and moving  the larger items to the menu/system/Lite Software addition route.  Concerned that there is iso size creep and hence greater risk of crashes during installation.
Found that DVD route has given problems on older dvd readers, leaving no option than to use USB flash drive route which is not straight forward for newbie.
Wide  backwards hardware support and ease of system setup ( keyboards/  Graphics / modems etc especially ) being a priority so that the new user can get online.   The current iso is just over the CD maximum size - some pruning might still allow it to fit on CD.

You said. Whatever XFCE is in the Ubuntu repos at the time will be included

So thats what i showed you here

And you really didn't tell me if it was going to be in the next release. But OK whatever  8)

Jerry stated very clearly which version of Xfce will be in the next Linux Lite release! So, not OK whatever...

Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu using the repositories of Ubuntu. This means that the version available through the Ubuntu repositories will be, by default, available under Linux Lite. Exactly as Jerry stated. As long Linux Lite is using Ubuntu repositories, Linux Lite will also follow the release schedule of all new packages and applications and libraries available in that Ubuntu repository. At the moment Canonical (developer of Ubuntu) decides to update some packages in the Ubuntu repositories, Linux Lite users will also get a notification that new updates are available. If canonical decides to update all packages for Ubuntu related to Xfce, then Linux Lite users can update their system as well.

In short terms speaking: Jerry is right!

My laptop:
MSI GE70-2PE*Quad core Intel Core i7-4710HQ*Kingston 16 GB RAM*Intel 4th Gen. Integr. GPU/NVidia GeForce GTX860M*Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2200/Intel Wireless 3160

I don't need Google, my wife knows everything!

That is an Xubuntu PPA, not an Ubuntu repo. If you're going to continue posting inaccurate comments, you'll leave us no choice but to delete them to ensure the information in this thread stays accurate.

A PPA looks like this: ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12

A repo looks like this: deb http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates main restricted
