Title: Very High CPU USAGE Issue
Post by: PCTECH on January 23, 2019, 04:56:03 PM
Hello

I have Linux Lite 4 (now 4.2) installed in my Dell Latitude  E6500. The system is "slamming the CPU's" at nearly full usage....even "idling" The culprit is Systemd, Udevd process according to HTOP. I understand that this is an issue with the underlying Ubuntu 18.04 base. If I switch the kernel back  to the 4.4x series the problem doesn't occur. My  question? Is there an easy fix for this? Is there and update coming for the issue?

I also have the slow motion bootup issue since I switched to LL 4. (a lot sloooower than LL 3x)

Any advise appreciated
Mark

Hello Mark,

for boot there was mentioned a issue with Virtualbox and the boot speed, the commands to fix it are here -

Have you read the release notes for 4.xx series? Boot times improve by disabling the vbox service.

Here's my old Asus Athlon with Firefox running and writing this post and working on Imgur too. My OS is biggger and my CPU is probably slower and older circa 2009.

*Do the vbox thing first. Udevd may indicate another issue but we won't attack that yet. Perhaps you switched back to a non-retpoline kernel from a retpoline kernel.

Update on high CPU usage, Kernel 4.13 seems to be that  latest series that you can use without the systemd udev CPU usage issue.
I did perform the VBOX remove instructions...It marginally improved boot-up times.

See the link below first. Do not set your wifi to automatically connect. If you are using a USB wifi and/or bluetooth connector make sure you have the right drivers installed. Also check your BIOS for settings concerning WIFI FN keys if it's a laptop.

Flashback...
Seems to be a specifiic DELL issue, I had this a while ago and turned off BlueTooth on my laptop since I didn't use it anyways. Then forgot about it.
Question for the future, is this a BlueTooth/WiFi 18,04 driver issue or a udev issue you think? :-S

Note : I'll get back to this forum if I come accross it again. - Bookmarked ;)

Cheers!
