This sounds like the problem you both have. There are 2 ways of power management, APM and ACPI..... APM is an old way and has been deprecated, APM works via the bios while ACPI is OS based. Modern kernels no longer have the APM modules built and this causes problems with shutdown in old machines.
The easiest solution is to search the bios for power management settings and disable them. This allows the software based ACPI to work.
