Again, just to chip in as a newbie to Linux.

If you can boot into live DVD and/or live USB, and haven't encrypted the hard disk, then if needs be it should be possible to examine any part of the hard disk from a live DVD/USB boot.  That may allow someone much more knowledgeable than me to suggest things to look at.

Ok... Lets try a few things then.
Unplug anything from laptop except power. Do not use a wireless keyboard / mouse.

Try pressing F1 (or F2) while booting, this will display the diagnostics/verbose boot.
Report back with last screen display upon freezing. Should have an error message or a Kernel Panic.
-and/or-
When on the frozen Splash, if you have a caps-lock or num-lock key indicator "light" Try tapping the caps-lock and/or num-lock key (a stand-alone key, used without the Fn function key). See if CAPSLock or NumLock light follows. If light stays fixed, this usually means the computer itself has crashed.

Good luck!

I booted first time normaly. Everything was working out of box. Without changing anything I restarted my system and I was unable to pass the splash image.

Another quick thought - you write that you are using a laptop.  I am assuming that you are using the laptop's built-in keyboard and getting no luck with holding the shift key at boot?  If you haven't done so, that might be the best option; but if that isn't working, it may be worth trying a USB keyboard if you have one.

Also, can you boot OK from the live-DVD or live-USB?

Otherwise, I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than I will have some ideas.

This is pretty fart fetched but if holding shift on boot does not work, maybe try pluging the keyboard (if USB) in another port just in case the USB controller is not supported on boot.
Maybe some Linux Masters here can help you, I'm still a Padawan. ;)

Cheers!

Choose the 4.4.0-112-generic only and not the upstart version?
(i.e. Hold shift on boot, choose the correct Kernel in "advance" settings).

I'm doing this by memory so hope I'm pointing correctly ;)
With that I cannot reach even console mode.

Just a thought, and an obvious question perhaps.  Have you set up whole-disk encryption?  I still use 3.6 but in that version the system will appear to get stuck on the splash screen while it waits for the decryption password.

Also, someone may be able to answer this - is it possible to clear the splash screen, and does this then display messages about the boot process (did I read somewhere the ESC key does this)?
No I haven't set up whole-disk encryption.

You can edit grub to remove the “quiet” line. Than update grub.
You’ll have all the output text.
(sorry I’m on my phone again and dont have the link to the related thread in these forum though).

I tried all options wit modifying grub. No luck.

Dear all,
I just installed linux lite 3.38 32 bit on my old laptop. Installation went fine. After installation I started for the first time, and everything worked out-of-box. I restarted system and now I'm stuck on splash screen, without option to go to the console mode.  When I choose in the grub to start  4.4.0-112-generic (upstart) I can reach console, and from there with startx  i'm getting GUI.
I have no idea how to solve the issue.
