You can install audacity via Install/Remove software.  Just search for audacity, mark it for installation and click on apply.

Or if you want to do the above faster, just enter the following code into a terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install audacity

Audacity is very feature rich.  If you want something more entry level, you should consider audio-recorder as seen here:
http://itsfoss.com/record-streaming-audio/.  It can be installed by putting the following in a terminal one line at a time.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:osmoma/audio-recorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audio-recorder

Looks like its activated... What app are you using to record?

If you have a webcam on your system and haven't yet, in Lite Software there is the webcam software - I think it will record video and audio...

UPDATE:
Oh the webcam software is called guvcview

Is the microphone an onboard microphone?  How do you want to use it?

What happens if you open up the Volume Control tool (Menu, Multimedia, Volume Control) and go to the Input Devices tab?  In the pull down menu for Port, do you see any microphone choices there?
