Title: Sound Fault newish Sony Tv
Post by: slivo59 on August 15, 2020, 04:45:37 PM
i have Linux lite v3.4
used it on a Sony TV model KDL-42W705B made Feb 2015
using the hdmi port to connect sound and vision no problems
i tried using it on new Sony TV model KD-55XF7073 made September 2018
using the hdmi port to connect vision perfect, sound garbled sqeeky
used hdmi sound options

Thinking that the latest v5 would cure the faulty sound waited till it came

Have now installed duel boot Linux lite v5 using the Sony TV model KDL-42W705B
again used the hdmi port to connect sound and vision no problems
so tried using it on Sony TV model KD-55XF7073
using the hdmi port to connect vision perfect, sound again garbled sqeeky
used hdmi sound options

trashes the sound Linux lite v3.4 and v 5 sends out.

My thoughts are that Sony have altered the on board sound somehow between
tv models or maybe my new Sony TV model KD-55XF7073 is a runt and other models have no problems

By the way i also use Raspberry Pi 3 model B on
this Sony TV model KD-55XF7073
used the HDMI port to connect sound and vision no problems

to get by have ordered from Ebay a
HDMI to 3 RCA CVBS Full HD Video 1080P AV Scart Composite Converter Adapter
hopefully this should circumvent the incompatibility problem till a suitable fix comes

Are you plugging into onboard HDMI on the pc or a GPU card? Whichever it is, what is the HDMI spec of it, 1.4 2.0 2.1?

Jerry.

i found this info at https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/44/why-is-my-audio-sound-output-not-working

Sound does not work with an HDMI monitor :-

This is caused by some computer monitors which select DVI mode even if an HDMI cable is connected. This fix may be necessary even if other HDMI devices work perfectly on the same monitor (or TV)! Edit the /boot/config.txt file (see Raspberry-Pi Configuration File) and add the following line to the configuration file:

hdmi_drive=2

If you think this will fix my problem, show me How do i edit the /boot/config file ?
there is a warning on file saying automatically generated file do not edit

The /boot/config.txt is unique to the Pi.

I went to  File System/boot and opened the latest file config-5.4.0-45-generic as administrator

on the last but one line i added

CONFIG_HDMI_drive=2

Then saved the file

After reboot normal sound returned on my Sony TV model KD-55XF7073

Audio mixer/volume control/configuration i selected

Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI} Output
Digital Surround 7.1 (HDMI} Output

Both worked the Fault is cured

As a further test i deleted  line CONFIG_HDMI_drive=2 then rebooted,
the tv did not revert to my original fault  ie sound garbled sqeeky
Also because i run dual boot my Linux Lite  v3.4 also has normal sound without the me needing to modify the config file

i do not fully understand what i have done. but i am happy that it worked

Nice one :)

Just keep in mind each time you get a new kernel, you'll have to do the same again with the config file, or, just keep booting that kernel.
