Jerry, thank you. I borrowed a Logitech webcam of similar ilk to the one suggested, and the Skype sound was succesful, the video and sound worked in a call (despite the lack of a camera icon!). Video recording was also possible in guvcview. All I had to do was plug the device in, and an alternative uvc video driver appeared in the drop down list, and at last the webcam worked.

Have you tried this - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1101063&page=2&p=9307284#post9307284

FYI the Logitech cameras are well supported on Linux, you can get a cheap one with working sound/video out of the box, no hassles. Worth consideration. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitech-hd-webcam-c270-black/9928354.p?id=1218196481203&skuId=9928354 To get your original hardware going you will need to do a lot of work in the terminal with no guarantee of success.

I am new to this operating system, which I have come to because MS Vista is losing support very soon. Thus far I am very impressed, but with one key exception. Skype is an essential part of my old operating system, but I cannot get it to work in Linux Lite - despite trawling through forum responses and Google searches. I cannot get my microphone to be recognised, though the Pulse Audio volume control shows an input response to my voice (on board SigmaTel HD and plugged in mic). No application is shown as recording – when Skype and Audacity are running. The Skype sound test, though perfectly audible, fails to register a recorded message from me. Audacity, however is able to record/playback plugged in and on board microphones. Is it perhaps no coincidence that guvcview and Skype do not function as expected, since my on board webcam (Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC6 with self-installed R5U870 driver) also refuses to record video in the former, and activate in the call window in the latter? I should be most grateful for some guidance, though please bear in mind that I have had limited experience using the terminal. These are my system details:
