Title: Older VAIO Laptop Running LL3.0 - no sound
Post by: XtraKargo on July 05, 2016, 12:11:16 PM
I am a total newb on the Linux side, but have loaded Linux Lite multiple times with success.  I have read through some posts and the Ubuntu Wiki for testing audio issues.  But I am not quite sure if I am headed down the right path. Here is what I know.  It is not muted, the audio that should be laying moves the blue bar in the volume control.  What is strange is the outputs, both headphones and line out, are followed by (UNPLUGGED) in the drop down.

I have ran the system report and the section that shows, sound has this listed.

===========================================================
Sound Information
===========================================================

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC260 Analog [ALC260 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

But after that I tried checking for the proper drivers and started to get lost...  Any help would be great.  Trying to give this older laptop another chance for my grandmother.  Thanks!

This is an old bug unfortunately. Some models of Sony VAIO with ALC260 have incomplete default pin configurations, which accounts for the card actually working, but not producing sound through the speaker or jacks out. I'm not sure if flashing the BIOS via jumper works or not on this laptop. There is a fairly new Ubuntu fix, but I honestly don't know where it is located anymore. I'll see what I can dig up for you short of recompiling the alsa drivers.

Well at least it wasn't something simple I could have missed! Thank you, Trinidad, for looking into it.

Okay. There was a Suse originated patch available for older Ubuntu versions which may or may not work, and requires a good bit of terminal work to be safe. It is located here:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git/commit/sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c?id=d08c5ef2a039393eaf2ab2152db5f07790fa0f40

However Ubuntu abandoned any bugfix altogether in newer versions as far as I can tell. That's the bad news.

I'm still looking for some good news because I think Suse and KDE may work properly for you on the old Vaio.

So would Suse be added to Linux Lite or I'd replace LL with Suse as the OS?  Plus I read that link, but I am not quite sure where to begin with that.  I see you are researching further, and I am hoping for a good deal as well.  Thanks again!

So I found that and the instructions made sense, but it didn't seem to work. I didn't get any devices recognized and may have to reload the ISO.  If someone can review the link trinidad left - Again I am really green to the Linux format - and can make sense of it, or know of another idear, that would be great.

Thank you again.

So the OPENSuse has returned audio to the system but with only 1gb of memory on this old of a machine it is a taxing software for the system.  Thank you guys for the help, I  :)greatly appreciate the feedback and support.
