Almost daily I encounter a new problem with Linux Lite.
Today I decide to play Christmas music saved on my external hard drive and get the following message:
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
-
Yo .
Is that s fresh install mate ! If so get into your Menu , in System , go to Install Additional Software & click on Restricted Extras , that should do it .
-
Wonder if Clementine would supports your Vids .
-
Thanks, tried the Restricted Extras install and again got an error message: Restricted Extras could not be installed.
Looking forward to getting back on Windows.
-
Did you tried Clementine !
Just wait for the devs to come by , they re much better than I am .
-
It means Undefined , Where the file comes from !
-
Hi,
There are 21 versions of Clementine on offer. I reckon I need a 32-bit version but which one?
I have Linux Lite 2 installed on my laptop.

What audio format are you trying to play? These are all of the formats that VLC currently supports: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

Hi,
You should be able to just go into
Menu > System > Install/Remove Software(Synaptic)
Then Search for: Clementine
"Right Click" it, Mark it for installation,
Click on the Apply in the top Menu Icons.
It should install the correct version for you.
It show's it's 1.2 in Synaptic

He's likely to have the same issues since Clementine is also using Gstreamer. The culprit is probably the file format.
-
O.K... See if he comes back with the format info.
Seems a pity to take a step-back to Windows.
-
Some people just don't have the same patience that we have. I know because my wife is very impatient, especially with technology. Lol
-
I remember back to early this year, I got frustrated...
Some things just didn't seam to make sense...
Slowly, and with the help of various forum members
I'm now at the tweaking and tinkering stage.
I do have a WiFi issue on my Laptop...
I will get round to fixing at some stage.
-
I asked about what was the files formats , no comeback yet , he stated Undefined ( undf ) , it would be good to know what s the format on ext hd as he clicks on this file ..
-
What s the computer that you use fella , you might miss some drivers also .
-
Thanks for your replies – I guess I am impatient with Linux as I am used to Windows where I can place a CD in the drive or extract a file from ext hd and hey presto, it plays! Most of my audio files are WMA which I thought would be converted by Clementine.
Speaking of which, I managed to fumble my way through installing Clementine (haven't a clue how) and what do I get? Another error message which reads “The stream is encrypted and decryption is not supported”.
I reckon the only solution is to give up as I have a life to live which does not involve sitting on my can mucking about with Linux until it finally works. If it doesn't do things from the outset then it ain't worth the bother.

John,
While I do understand your frustrations it's important to note the following:
- Linux and distributions such as LL are often made by people who are volunteering time and money to make a free OS. For the most part there is not a massive company such as Microsoft funding the development.
- For what it's worth, your specific issue is likely due to files with DRM (digital rights management) which is not the fault of Linux. In fact it's stuff like that which drives people to contribute to projects like Linux Lite. Your files and software should be controlled by you and not the other way around.
- Bill Gates' first versions of Windows had bugs too. It's not until many people worked together that it became more reliable and easy to use. The same goes for Linux. I guess what I'm saying is that Windows and Linux would not be what they are today without the contributions of many people. You can't give Bill all the credit.
Anyhow, your mind is obviously set however I wish you well in whatever OS you choose to use.
-
Find it weird , WMA files are supported by VLC , it might have to do with some missing codecs .
I can understand your frustrations , been the same when I came on Linux some 8 years ago . I have time now to fool around on Linux , which might not be the case for everyone & it s understandable .

altman, please see my response above. The files are probably protected by DRM.
-
Well , it might be .

Hi john9159,
I understand your frustration... To re-emphasise one of the points of mlsmith...
MS have an enormous base of users/testers, hence bugs and such like get fixed relatively quickly.
Remember though you are paying MS for the OS/Software, and also you are an unpaid tester.
I don't have the knowledge or expertise to fix your specific issue,
I have had some issues since March, but have worked through them with support from the forum.
I know it maybe stretching it, and I don't know how to verify it.??
It's almost as though the unrestricted extras are indicating being installed, when they may not be.??

"The stream is encrypted and decryption is not supported" is usually a pretty good indicator that the file is encrypted via DRM.
-
I think that it all boils down to a placebo effect. If you expect it to work it will, but if your mind is set against even penicillin won't help.
:)
-
I'm still a little unsure why he tried Linux to begin with if Windows is so great.

O.K... I was just thinking out loud
So it's not a LL issue... It's the properties of the media/files

Hello john9159,
Do you have access to another computer or laptop ?
If so you can do this -
1 - plug in external drive containing DRM musics to the other computer
2 - plug in a lead to the speaker output (or headphone output on a speaker itself) of that
computer, plug the other end of the cable in to the line in of the machine running Linux Lite.
3 - play wmv with its DRM, on "other computer", use program to capture the line in stream in
smarter Linux Lite computer and save as DRM free mp3.
-
Or the free Ogg format. ;-)
-
Hello!
VLC WILL play WMAs, but VLC, or anything else, won't even touch DRM files that don't 'belong' to that particular PC.
When MP3 players first came out, they didn't have much internal memory, and memory cards were only 32-64 MB in size. Therefore, I converted my MP3s to WMAs to fit twice as many songs on the player.
Recently, I have been working to convert them all back to MP3s, as space is no longer much of an issue. Abhorrent to the concept, I have managed to totally avoid DRM...

You should also consider the free ogg format. That's pretty much what my entire library consists of. If not ogg then flac. I'm also looking forward to more widespread adoption of opus.

Hello, Mike!
Thanks for your kind words in the other post.
Judging from your posts here, you seem to abound in good ideas. Therefore, I'll look into that, to the extent that Ogg-Vorbis doesn't cause me problems in playing them on other devices.

If you're now using linux full time, it's time to convert your existing media files (video & audio) to free formats, and continue to use free software. Free software will liberate you from anti-social technologies like DRM.

Just posting some relevant troubleshooting info in case this comes up again.
I am in Mint 17 right now so just posting what I know from there.
sudo apt-get install dvd+rw-tools
If it says it already newest version , no sweat.

After installing the above. I went out to my Truck and grabbed my Tubular Bells CD which is what I listen to for christmas music.
I insert it and let it autorun but I say don't play it.
Next in Terminal.

Hopefully this will help future DRM Threads. I know myt Tubular Bells disc is not DRM. But this was done to show how to properly post
when really earnest trying to get assistance and not trolling which is my take on this thread.
Merry Xmas, Rok

Couldn't agree more. Pretty clear from all prior posts (in this and other threads) from OP that not really interested in learning anything or making much of a real effort to do so. Just wants to complain.

True , trolling doesn t help much . But sometimes I think the situation seems to get out of hands when someone doesn t understand right .
