Simple, just read the thinkwiki you recommended and although it did not name the model thinkpad that I have, I decided to try it any way. The thinkwiki said that the volume controls on the keyboard are seperate from the software volume controls. So I just kept raising the volume with the keyboard until I began to hear something. Still had to raise all volume levels, but now have good sound. Hope this helps. Thanks for your support.

Volume keys on the keyboard worked. I now have sound. Although I Feel Pretty Dumb. But thanks, everything works fine now and is very fast on this old machine. Much better than windows.
