This might be complicated depending on your circumstance.
Your situation is probably completely legitimate but there are some things to consider regarding unknown passwords on donated systems.

Did the computer come with username and password information ?
If the computer has been gifted legitimately, ideally it should have been cleared of any previous user data and set up for you (and only you) to use in future..

When the computer is first booted up, does it ask for a username and password before you can log in ?
If you enter a password at that point, it is likely the password you use then will work if to use to authorise the update/upgrade.

There will be a password - on a stand alone set up (not a business or similar) the main user of a system is normally in control of the security of the system.

ashros92 Wrote:can someone get remote access to update the computer?
In theory, yes, remote access is possible but unless the person who has remote access is completely trusted it is not recommended.  Anyone using remote access to apply updates would need to know the system password in order to carry out the work.  If remote access is needed for routine tasks like updates then something odd is happening.

If you suspect someone has remote access don't use the computer.

If the circumstances are legitimate and it is simply a case of forgotten password there is a password recovery process

A disk wipe and reinstall of the operating system should be considered.
