Partition guidance/recommendation - Asus Notebook UX32VD
#1
Hello! I'm in need for some partitioning guidance on a Asus Notebook UX32VD. It currently runs Windows 10, but I would like a Linux only system for a single-user that will (almost) only use it for browsing the internet. Trying to keep it as simple as possible.

Device specification:
- i7-3517U CPU
- 4GB RAM
- i100 24GB SSD (soldered)
- 500GB HDD

The main part I'm not sure about is the best use of the 24GB SSD, only place root or also swap here? Or maybe it's better to have all the partitions on the HDD?

I'm also interested in recommendations on the size of swap, and if there is a need for more than swap, root, and home partitions in my case.

Thanks in advance!

If your priority is to keep it simple and you don't intend to add a lot of applications, a default installation to the SSD should work for you.  A fresh install of Linux Lite version 7.x will include swap space as a file and should leave about 25% free space on the SSD.  As a swapfile is used (by default), choosing the size and location of a swap partition is not an issue.

The HDD can be used to save documents, backups etc.

Quote:only use it for browsing the internet
That covers a wide range of scenarios.
4GByte RAM should be adequate for casual browsing with single figure tabs open.

In addition to stevef's straight forward and helpful advice I'd suggest to put the /home directory onto your 500GB HDD. A few more steps during installation (as not the default) but more convenient and more bullet prove space-wise during operation.

Thanks for the reply stevef!
Yes, simple and few applications is the idea. Happy to hear that the SSD should be enough. I did not know about the included swapfile, sounds great!
