Video Card Driver issues
#1
I'm having some problems with my Linux Lite, whenever I watch a Youtube video above 480p, the video is delayed and skips to catch up with the audio. Direct* Wine games only show grey screens for a few seconds, then they crash to the desktop, OpenGL games also seem to run slowly. Only Glide games work as they should be on my PC. I'm using latest version (1.7.24) of wine, by the way, and run games through PlayOnLinux, but the same problem occur when I install/run games without it.

All of these issues seem to relate to my graphics card (AMD E-300), and that I don't have a Linux driver for it. I did a little research, and found this, but when I downloaded it and attempted to install it, it asked me to reboot, so I did, and it completely messed up the OS! It was showing the Ubuntu splash/loading screen and just hung there. I has to completely reinstall Linux Lite to fix the problem!

So what do I do now? Where/how can I get a working Linux driver for my graphics card installed?

Just guessing from the deserts of TX.

You're might be running a non-accelerated video driver
like vesa. Or haven't gotten the DRI component working right.

So how about some info for the members here 1st so they can chime in as I am kinda in and out of here.
Open a terminal and give us the readouts from the commands I'll give you below.

Code:
xvidtune -show

Code:
glxinfo | grep -i "direct rendering"

Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i "dri" | grep -v -i "driver"

So you won't be afeared. Mine on a new install on another Laptop I own as a example. I run the free ati open source driver because I don't care about gaming.

Code:
harry@biker1:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i "dri" | grep -v -i "driver"

Okay, sure. It might look like a cluster, and hard to read...

This one is kind of long, and I don't think is showing good signs...

EDIT: I discovered an "Install Drivers" program in the menu, and I saw my card in the "Additional Drivers" with 3 options 1 open source and 2 propriety, I chose a propriety one as it seems open-source ones don't seem fit for games. I clicked "Apply Changes", and a bar loaded up and took a while to complete, so I assumed that was it installed, but Youtube videos were still going slow and games still didn't load up!

Well since you changed out drivers. Guess what. Your readout info will be changed also.

So not knowing what driver you installed or how well it is acting.

You will need to repeat the steps I gave in my previous post.

The screenshot is pretty. But says nothing of what driver it installed. It would have been nice to see the whole driver install process with screenshots But. That is water under the bridge now.

Also, you might want to look through this relevant section of the forum.

I just had a look, and I found a few topics with the same issue as mine, but no solution...

EDIT: I'm not sure if this would be any help at all, but I found out that I had "AMD Catalyst Control Center" installed, but I get this error message when I try to start it:

Seems like things have gone down hill for you after you used the gui installer. I did a new install on this Compaq Laptop yesterday on a new internall SSD. It is a close match to your video chip by one number.

Code:
@biker1:~$ inxi -G
Graphics:  Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Wrestler [Radeon HD 6250]
           X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD PALM GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3

you won't get a inxi command found. I installed inxi via
Code:
sudo apt-get install inxi
in my install.

Code:
@biker1:~$ glxinfo | grep -i "direct rendering"
direct rendering: Yes

You said

Code:
I chose a propriety one as it seems open-source ones don't seem fit for games. I clicked "Apply Changes", and a bar loaded up and took a while to complete, so I assumed that was it installed,
But your latest readout still shows radeon (which is open sources) driver being used.

No direct rendering anymore either. Looks to me like your attempt to install the proprietary driver went way wrong somehow.
Without seeing what happened with the install process. I can't say what happended myself.
I am getting kinda lost on this thread on what to suggest next.

Yeah, I switched back to the open-source driver after finding out that with the propriety driver, no games were even starting up, and that included 3DFX and OpenGL games. Does that mean I have to run those tests again?

EDIT: Doesn't matter, here are the results:

I've also discovered something, I tried out Rollcage 2 just there for the first time, and it worked perfectly in D3D mode! Maybe DirectX isn't the problem...

If that's the case, though, then how come games like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault doesn't start up for me despite getting a "Gold" rating on WineHQ? Robot Arena 2 doesn't start for me either, but I've heard that despite having mouse issues, it should at least start up and show the main menu? Both games only show a Grey screen for a few seconds, then close.

Youtube videos still go very slow as well. So what's going on?

I don't know really right now. At least you went back to original setup at least and things look a little better.
Not being a gamer myself. I am no expert on why a certain game won't play vs a game that does.
Hopefully some other member will know why.
Sorry.  :-[

Okay, thanks anyway.

I tried running MOHAA in the terminal, and this was what came out:
Code:
fixme:service:scmdatabase_autostart_services Auto-start service L"SecDrv" failed to start: 2

I looked this up and apparently it's a DRM issue, but the game didn't have this problem before it at least tried to run the program before, not it doesn't, why is this problem all of a sudden occurring? How do i fix it?

EDIT: I got that fixed, but now I'm back to the grey screen issue. I was told that that problem is usually caused by an anti-virus blocking the program, but when I tried disabling my anti-virus (Comodo), it still didn't run.

So what now?
