Hello from Jakarta: measuring game performance on a mid-range phone
#1

Hi everyone. I'm Eka, writing from Jakarta. I've been reading this forum on and off for a while because Linux Lite is the distribution I keep coming back to for older laptops, and I finally made an account.

Most of my tinkering happens on a three-year-old mid-range Android phone, where I use Termux to run the same command-line tools I would use on a desktop. A small shell script samples /proc/stat, /proc/meminfo and the thermal zones every two seconds while a game stays in the foreground, so I can watch CPU load and free memory while the phone heats up. proot gives me a Debian userland, so htop and a short Python script for plotting both work without root.

The surprise was storage, not graphics: moving the game to internal storage and clearing background cache changed frame pacing more than any in-game quality setting I tried.

Lately I've been setting up Linux Lite 8.0 on a spare ThinkPad to compare the same measurements on a desktop, where the numbers are far more stable and the thermal story is much less dramatic.

Glad to be here. If anyone else measures throttling on cheap hardware, I'd like to hear how you do it without root.
