[SOLVED] Help needed to install Epson XP-225 Network Printer
#1

System Specs
Operating System – Linux LiteLinux Lite 7.2
CPU / ProcessorIntel G3220
Memory (RAM)4 GB
StorageSATA SSD (2.5")
Graphics (GPU)Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200
Network deviceRealtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
I think I am going to need quite a lot of help, being new to Linux Lite and somewhat new to Linux.

I went to Epson Downloads for XP-225, Linux Deb(x64)
When I clicked the Download button, a new tab opened which listed the contents of epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.8.8-1_amd64.deb

How can I get the file to be saved in my Downloads folder?

Debian has a list of FTP sites which appear to host the file.  You could try one of them.

Thanks.

I downloaded the file from  ftp.debian.org/debian
(Perhaps I should mention that I tried the UK link first, but it looks like it has been hacked).

I double-clicked the file in File Manager, and I got this popup:
An older version is available in a software channel
Generally you are recommended to install the version from the software channel, since it is usually better supported.

Should I ignore this message?

A browser download does suggest the transfer protocol from the UK site may be insecure.

Before installing any drivers, can we establish how far into the installation process you are ?
The fact that you are downloading and trying to install drivers suggests you've encountered some kind of hitch in what is mostly a fairly smooth process.

The normal sequence for a networked printer would be

1 Connect the printer to your local network and ensure it is online
2 Start the set up tool using Menu->System->Printers->Add
3 Follow the installation wizard to locate and set up the printer.

How far have you got down this route ?

The printer was already connected to the network, and is being regularly used.

I ran Menu->System->Printers, and I was puzzled by the dialog which came up.

The window title is Printers - localhost, and the printer is already shown.
Could this mean that I previously connected the printer using a USB cable?
My memory is not too good at nearly 80, so it’s possible.

I tried clicking the Add button, and selected Network Printer, and then Find Network Printer.
I then clicked Find, and got the message ‘No printer was found at that address’
I hadn’t entered any address, and I thought that the wizard should be able to detect the printer automatically.

I started searching on this forum, and found this:

These instructions start with driver download and installation, so I tried to follow them.

Ok. Understood.
For the 1.8.8.-1 deb file you downloaded, I think the 'older version is available in a software channel' it refers to is version 1.7.17-4 which is already on your computer.  Better to go with the pre-installed version for the time being.  Save the downloaded 1.8.8-1 somewhere in case it is needed at some point.

Does it have a fixed IP address and do you know what it is ?
Ideally the answer is 'yes' to both these.  If the answer is 'no' let us know before carrying on.

No it isn't that smart, you need to give it something to work with.

Yes, it could be left over from a physical connection.
Hover your mouse over the existing printer icon and wait for a label to pop up.
If the label says 'Printer', then the icon represents a printer that was physically connected to the PC, probably by USB. This would have been auto-detected and setup by the system without intervention.
If so we can check what drivers the system assigned for the printer.
You can leave it as it does no harm. Just skip the next paragraph and go to Adding a fresh network printer.

If the label says 'Network Printer' then the icon is probably there because it was added manually. Possibly as a result of your earlier attempt. If you never completed the addition, the icon is unlikely to work, but it is worth a quick test.  Check the printer is ready, right click on the icon and click 'Print Test Page'.  If the printer prints a page we have a starting point. If the test page doesn't work, cancel any troubleshooting process and delete the printer icon so we have a fresh start.

Adding a fresh network printer.

With the printer online and ready, click '+ Add' in the 'Printers - localhost' window.
Click the Arrowhead next to 'Network Printer' to expand the choices.
Directly below the 'Network Printer' text you may see one or more lines referencing your printer model.  This is a good sign that the PC is detecting broadcast messages from your printer.
Highlight the line 'Find Network Printer'
In the box labelled 'Host:' type in the IP address of the printer, then click 'Find'
After a few seconds you may see a number of lines added to the Devices box.
Each line indicates a service offered by the printer.
If one of the new entries is IPP followed by your printer's IP address select it.
Click 'Forward'
Find and select 'Epson', click forward.
Find and select 'XP-225', click forward
Type in Name, description, location as required, click 'Apply'

All being well the wizard will then offer to print a test page.

Let us know how you get on.

I set the printer up years ago.

I can't remember the procedure, but I think it's unlikely that it has a fixed IP Address.

The printer icon is labelled 'Network Printer', so I tried printing a test page.
The page is in the print queue, but with a message saying the printer may not be connected.

I'm not familiar with the XP-225. A quick search suggests there is a button on the printer with an network picture and an 'i' for information located next to the wifi button.  According to the document I found, pressing the 'i' button
Quote:Prints the network status sheet allowing you to check the network settings and connection status. The PIN code for PIN Code Setup (WPS) is also printed.
Try pressing that 'i' button.

In that case, cancel the print and any troubleshooting suggestions, then right click on the icon and select delete to remove it.
Once you have the IP address of the printer go through the Adding a fresh network printer instructions posted above.

I deleted the printer, then clicked Add.
In the box labelled 'Host:' I typed in the IP address of the printer, then clicked 'Find'
A huge number of lines were added, most of them consisting of the IP Address only.
I think it’s best if I try to upload a screenshot.
There were so many lines, I made 2 screenshots, hopefully you can see them at:

Ok, select the line
Code:
JetDirect(192.168.0.18)
then
Click 'Forward', not 100% sure, but that may take you to the make and model selections, if so
Find and select 'Epson', click forward.
Find and select 'XP-225', click forward
Type in Name, description, location as required, click 'Apply'

If you don't get a list of make/model please advise.
