Not Able to Install Google Chrome on Linux Lite 6.6
#11
Will do as soon as I can hand crank and get some spark plugs to fire. In a few minutes.

In your earlier posts you said
Quote:At that time Goggle Chrome would tell that updates are available.
I would start to install them, but the installation would fail.
Do you remember why/how updating Chrome this way failed ?

You also posted that you'd tried to uninstall and reinstall Chrome but failed.
Can you provide more details about this please ?
The instructions you followed and the outcomes might be useful.

Chrome is the browser bundled with LL6.x - I'm not sure of the consequences of trying to uninstall it.
If I get chance, I'll try to set up a test system.

When you try launching Chrome it ends with an illegal instruction.
May be wrong, but I don't think the missing cpufreq files is the problem.

The libva errors indicate a possible problem between later Chrome (which got updated when you fixed the dpkg issue) and your hardware.
If this is right, the options include
1) Wait for Chrome to be fixed, using Firefox in the meantime - it might help to report the problem to Chrome.
2) Regress Chrome to an earlier version an block it from updating.

Option 1 would be simpler.

Hi Steve,
If I remember about 6 to 12 months ago, while I was using Google Chrome, it would
tell me that updates are available, I clicked on install. After while Chrome would say that
the updated failed to install. or something like that. I did not worry about it because Chrome
was continue to work.

I would look at the version number of Chrome and would see that it was not upgrading any
above v. 130.0.6723.69 as of about 1/01/25.

I was no longer getting the LL 6.6 OS updates due to my earlier dpkg issue, which I found your
solution to about ten day ago. So, ten days ago, I brought LL 6.6 completely up to day of
installing all OS updates. Within a few minutes as I tested both web browsers, I realized that
Chrome would spin the rotating circle but never come up to the point of producing screens to
look at. Firebox still worked.

(I had not known that Google Chrome is closely coupled with LL and is part of the regular OS
updates. Now I do.)

I decided next to "install the latest version of Chrome" and attempted to download it. The file
I downloaded could not be expanded and executed, as I described in my first message of this thread.

Next, I decided to try to remove Google Chrome. (I do not know my way well around the menus of
Linux Lite.) I did not find in the application "Install Software" Firefox or Chrome listed, as a way to
remove or install only the web browser.

I next looked at the Synaptic Package Manager. The list of packages is long. I did not spend much
time searching for packages starting with "Chrome". I did not remove any packages as it seemed too
dangerous, because of my lack of skills.

As of this minute, I see the list has four packages that start with google-chrome. Version 143 is installed.

I am happy to go with option 1) and continue to use Firefox, hoping that Google Chrome will eventually be
fixed in a future OS update. I can say something to Google about fixing Chrome. But I think Chrome
support people would take more seriously if you report the problem because you can describe some of the
technical details.

I will avoid option no. 2) as it seems more risky and complicated for me to block Chrome from upgrading.

I will continue to install all LL 6.6 OS updates a few times per week and see if and when Google Chrome
starts to work.

I will continue to log into the forums for while in case you want to communicate anything else.
If and when Google Chrome starts to work, I will let you know.
Thanks for your help. I have learnt a few things and I am glad that Linux does not have to be
reinstalled every few months. Linux Lite first was installed in this machine in Sept. 2024.

Few free to mention to me any other commands you would like me to try.

Orson,

If you have a quick scroll through the list reported by the update process you should be able to spot when a Chrome update comes through. The 'Available Updates' screen which appears with the final 'Update Now' or 'Cancel' option will have an entry for google-chrome-stable showing the INSTALLED and AVAILABLE version numbers.

As far as I can tell, for a user, reporting a problem to Google about Chrome requires running Chrome. Chrome doesn't have a problem on my system and your Chrome doesn't open so we may be stuck.

To be honest, if Firefox meets your needs, just use that.

Yes, I can use Firebox on my Linux Lite machine.
And I can run Google Chrome on the Chromebook to try to report the problem to Google.
