I agree, DBan is one of the best ways if you can wipe the hard drive. And since you mentioned Windows XP, I would not want to "save" it. It's slow, old and not supported anymore.
If you need to keep data tough, I used Avira Rescue CD to save people from some nightmares a few times, but it's been a while since I used it. Last years infections where ramsomwares and encrypted the data itself
