Permissions error mounting USB drive
#2
Two updates:-

1.  The USB stick permissions from right-clicking the desktop icon that appears read (now anyway):-

Owner: root (root)
Access: Read & Write
Group: root
Access: None
Others: None

Which is why I'm guessing gparted run from the menu is not offering any formatting options.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to sudo run gparted from the terminal; or being new to linux still how to even change the permissions in the terminal back to me.

2.  I can burn to DVD on the laptop, so I am at least able to backup that way for now (and they verified from SHA-256 after burn).  If that finalized the DVD then that downgrades the urgency of this for me for now.
