I have recently joined this forum too. And I am also of the older persuasion. I first got involved with computers in 1962 (that is not a typo, 1962) so like you I have lots of memories of the early days. I moved over to Linux exclusively in 1999, so I have seen a few changes. My current distro is Xubuntu, for a few years now, but I am looking at Linux Lite and seriously considering moving over. Meanwhile, I have installed it on my laptop which I use for testing out Linux generally. My main computer is a desk top.
What I like about Lite is that it seems to be a good choice for those new to Linux, and can be very successful for more experienced users too. It does not have a lot of packages installed from the beginning, but it can easily have more added as and when. I hope you enjoy working with Lite and good luck with it.
