I can't give any guesses as to what was wrong; never saw it act like that in Linux or Windoze.
Since I didn't known about FF's Safe Mode, Scott wins this laurel and hearty handshake.
I had the problem too.
FF (with refresh per minute of sites along each other), Akregator (with refresh), Sylpheed
(also with refresh), Chrome and sometimes other programs consumed after some hours
so much memory that I extended memory. After that I went searching.
(All on a modern Asus pc with 2 gig of memory.)
With the memory-applet I could see the ever increasing of the use of memory of FF.
So I have installed add-ons 'empty cache' and set to automatic and by hand, 'ram back', 'memory restart' and later as an alternative 'ram restart', which is tiny better.
My problems are over and it looks like FF is doing better overall at the moment?!
The desktop-icons sometimes jumped to the left but I've not seen this now for a while.
Maybe it had to do something with the use of memory..?
I have used the last two years the very good Xubuntu, I know the fine PCLOS MATE,
Mint 17, a little less SnowLinux and some others but... Linux Lite is the best for now in my opinion.
Crispy, fast, sparky and stable. More stable than (XKLU)buntu as far as I can see; just as stable than Debian. And it is much lighter...! So back-ups for instance with Clonezilla are very fast.
