Most Linux Lite forum regulars here have probably figured out by now that my interest is in finding simple GUI clicker friendly ways to enable power local area networking for home users and small business users, in Linux Lite ways, in Windows ways, and in cross platform ways.
I have managed to hack together a minimally featured working 64 bit Linux Lite desktop for bash in Windows 10, though admittedly severely hacked, it performs well on an adequate, but somewhat under powered dated Dell computer (2.33g CPU, 4gig RAM, 500gig SSD) using an Xming external X server running in Windows 10. This was not particularly difficult to do. The performance is adequate, everything works and plays together okay, but somewhat sluggishly. I can run G-Vim and Leafpad, a Links2 web browser in graphics mode, and Double Commander reasonably effectively on my hacked together Linux Lite desktop. Getting that far required a bit of effort, but the reward of making the GUI function doesn’t reach the big payoff until you connect the Windows 10 computer via Remmina and Windows RDP to a Linux Lite computer.
Starting bash, and using WSL, via Remmina and Windows RDP from your Linux computer, noticeably increases the speed of any graphical applications running in WSL. Windows sorts and backgrounds many Windows processes when connected this way (previous tutorials) and some Linux applications simply default to X on your Linux computer during the session, though the desktop and its menus running in bash still use the external Xming server during the session, but even this is faster via RDP because of Windows’ channeling priorities. It works very well, and the Links2 web browser can connect to the Internet during the session in graphics mode, and is very fast performing with manually entered URLs.
I have a series of seven screen shots with descriptions I like to post, but I am a bit uncertain about how to do that sensibly on this forum, or if that many images are acceptable here. I could use a few pointers on posting these, if there is any interest. I have also prepared a document containing all the past tutorials I have posted here with corrections, and additions, and organized with a TOC. Would like to post that too as maybe a sticky in the Network section of the forum. Could use some guidance on these forum posting issues. Feel free to use my email for communications.
