Windows 7 should be formatted NTFS by default... there are other FAT and FAT32 for example, as well as EXT variations and others (exFAT).
I was curious as you said it hung after the update screen ; the next screen is where the disk formatting occurs (see my previous post)... Thought maybe the disk was formatted other than NTFS - - hence hanging on that portion of the install...
UPDATE:
My drive was NTFS (Windows), after installing LL (and Mint) I have 2 other EXT4 partitions along with swap..
