I had this same issue after attempting an update yesterday, and tried your suggested fix:
[size=1em]ctlr-alt-F1[/size]
[size=1em]login using your username & password[/size]
[size=1em]do
udo stop lightdm[/size]
[size=1em]startxfce4[/size]
[size=1em]After the desktop runs, reboot. (enter password if needed)[/size]
It came up fine after the startxfce4, but upon reboot. same deal (black screen w/cursor). I repeated it and did a Systemback restore and it seemed fine after that. Makes me wonder though what the deal is with numerous users having this issue in October?
