Not Able to Install Google Chrome on Linux Lite 6.6
#1
My Linux Dell Dimension 3100 has all of the latest updates installed.  I have not been able to install Google Chrome.
Google Chrome stopped working a few days ago after I installed all of the latest updates to LL 6.6.

Using the Firefox web browser,
From www.google.com/chrome, I download the 64-bit.deb.
The file I get is google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb.

(I am kind of curious why amd64 is in the file name, because my
Dell Dimension 3100 has an Intel processor.)

After I click on the file that I downloaded, I get an small pick-up window which
states "Open the file link?
You'll need to chose an application."
I click on the Choose button.
But there not a list of applications to choose from
It would seem that Linux Lite should know what applications to use to expand
and execute the file.
I do not know whether Google needs to fix the problem or whether
Linux Lite needs to produce an update to fix the problem.

So, right now, it is not possible to install Google Chrome on Linux Lite 6.6.
I would appreciate any suggestions for help.  I am new to Linux in the process of
moving over from Windows.  Thank you.

Welcome.

Google Chrome is already installed on Linux Lite 6.x. Installing it again should not be necessary and may be counter productive..

We can try to find out what is wrong with Google Chrome rather than try to install something.
Can you tell us a bit more about the problem ?
If you describe exactly what happens it will help diagnose.

Hi Stevef, Thank you for looking into this.

Checking notes, I had been running Google Chrome v. 130.0.6723.69 as of
01/01/24. At that time Goggle Chrome would tell that updates are available.
I would start to install them, but the installation would fail. I did not worry
much about not having the most recent updates to Google Chrome at that time
because Chrome was still working for me. I did notice that Google Chrome
was not updating automatically.

Sometime, during 2024 I was not able top keep up with installing the most recent
OS updates for Linux Lite 6.6. I would always get the message to run
'dplkg --configure -a' to correct the problem

Being busy with other things and Linux Lite 6.6 was working for me, I did not
worry much about not being able to install the most recent OS updates.

About 10 days ago, I found your instructions, dated 07-16-2025, on the forum to solve
the problem above. I followed your instructions. That fixed the problem; I updated
to the most recent OS updates for Linux Lite 6.6.

After I installed all of the OS updates, then Google Chrome stopped working.
I attempted to install to the latest version of Google Chrome, but it failed. That is what I described
in my first post of this thread. At this point, I can not remove or install
Google Chrome. Firefox is working fine and does its updates automatically.

Let me know if you need anymore information or if I can help in anyway.
I might not be able to check the Linus Lite forums every day, so if you want
to get my attention quickly, feel free to messages to my e-mail address:
[email protected]

Thanks. I am excited to see the growth of Linux.

Thank you for the context, that helps.

We really need to know what you mean by this.

Can I suggest that you open a terminal by pressing 'Ctrl' 'Alt' and 'T' together.
In the window that opens, type or paste in this command to try to start Chrome
Code:
/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable %U
and then press Enter.
Chrome should try to start. Any errors it encounters may be shown in the terminal session.
Some messages are routine and not to worry about, please copy the terminal output and paste the messages back into the forum.

O.K. I will do it.

Hi Steve,
I get:
"bash : /use/bin/google-chrome-stable: No such file or directory"

When I clip on the Google Chrome icon, I get the rotating circle for 10 to 20 seconds.

It seems like there is a partial install of Google Chrome on my machine. I think I need a way
remove the Google Chrome completely and then installed the latest version.

And yes I took great care to type the command correctly.

Hi Steve, I may have screwed up.
ls -l /usr/bin Google* shows the symbolic link to be there.
I will get you the error lines.

Steve, We maybe seeing two problems:
1. The version of Google installed on my machine does not start-up correctly.
The version would be no newer than v. 130.0.6723.69 as of 01/01/2024.

This problem could be due to this old version of Google Chrome does not work
correctly with the latest OS updates to Linux Lite 6.6 as of a few days ago when I
installed all of the latest OS updates to LL 6.6.

2. I am not able to remove the old version of Google Chrome from my machine nor
install the latest version
from www.google.com. I wonder if we would be most productive in fixing this problem first?

Your post is a bit confusing but the crashpad errors are probably significant, pointing to problems with at least two system files.

I doubt there is a compatibility problem between the OS and Chrome as both should get updated during an update/upgrade run and in any case I would expect a new OS to run a slightly older browser.

The most recent update/upgrade which included Chrome was around 7th January 2026 and should have installed Chrome version 143.0.7499.192. Before that, an update/upgrade on or around 19th December 2025, would have installed version 143.0.7499.169-1. So, if you successfully updated 10 days ago, I would expect to see Chrome 143.0.7499.169-1 on your system.

We can see what version of Chrome the package manager thinks is installed and what OS is running.
Open a terminal as before and run these commands and report back
Code:
apt list google-chrome-stable
Code:
inxi -S

We can also try to confirm the locations the crash is reporting failing to open with these commands. Again post back what the terminal reports.

Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq

I think there is one problem but, at the moment, I don't know what is wrong, so too early to decide how best to fix.

Do you have any system snaphots taken before you did the update/upgrade 10 days ago ? Is all your personal data back ups complete. How much pain would a re-install of Linux Lite cause you ?

Hi Steve,
I will run the commands, that you stated, either this evening when I get home or tomorrow morning.

There is no valuable data on this machine or even personal information. If you want
me to arrange so that you can remotely log in to look around, that is fine with me.

I would rather not do a complete re-install as that reminds me too much of what I am
trying to get away from with regularly having to re-stall Windows often. But the
bigger reason I prefer not to do a re-install is that it takes me a long time (probably
because I am not yet very good at it.)

If I were to do an compete re-install, I would have to decide whether to run Linux Lite
Series 6 or Series 7. A while back, I did start to prepare a bootable flash drive of Linux
Lite 7.0 I think it was. I had planned to installed Linux Lite 7.X on a second Dell
machine as number 2 to start testing Linux Lite for reliability.

I use mostly Chromebooks for running the Chrome Web Browser, but the Linux machines are
intended to use for printing. (It is nearly impossible to get a printer to work from a
Chromebook.)

Only after I have several Linux machines running that prove to be highly reliable, will I move
over my data and Office Suite work.

To answer your question, I have not progressed to the level of regularly taking system
snap shots.
