There is an environment variable set named $USER.
In the ~/.conky/widget, there is a line, towards the bottom of the file:

Open ~/.conky folder.
Open 'widget' in text editor.
Look for the line: alignment bottom_right
Change it to read: alignment bottom_left, or ...middle_left to suit, and save.

I prefer to have the info on my screen normally.
But I also have a button on my panel that toggles Conky on or off, if I need to, via a (very) short script.
