Wow - Xtile is exactly what I have been looking for - for a long time!  Thanks for asking the question and posting the reply!

For anyone else interested in tiling window managers, especially those who prefer using the keyboard, i3 is a great option - fast, clean and easy to configure: http://i3wm.org/

SweetAction22,

Don't know if you are still here with us at LL and not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I just stumbled on this post:  http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=3668.  It's about window snapping and I thought it might be something you'd be interested in and might be what you were originally looking for.  I don't know, but figured you might want to have a look.

Thanks for the help..

Just downloaded, installed and tested this:  http://www.giuspen.com/x-tile/.  I think that's along the lines of what your looking for.  Have only played around with it for a few minutes, so can't give detailed instructions on it's use.  You'll just have to play around with it and refer to features listed on the site.  Try searching in youtube or google for further demos or instructions if there is something you can't figure out.

To install it, download the .deb file.  Then open file manager and navigate to location of downloaded file.  Right-click and select "Open with GDebi Package Manager".  Click "Install".  When done, close out of GDebi and the X-tile app will be listed in Menu -> Accessories.

Another option you might want to look into is this:  http://xmonad.org/.  I have no experience with it, and haven't tested it, but seems to something along those lines as well.
