Title: Post Your Desktop Screenshots!
Post by: Teddy on March 09, 2014, 10:19:44 PM
This is a little event we do on the LDC forums, so we spread the love to this forum! Post away! Screenshots have to be strictly Linux Lite.

Here's a screenshot that reminds me of my service at Holloman AFB, New Mexico (1982-1985)...

What did you do there?

Hello, Valtam!

I repaired the base's electronic crypto machines. Some of them were used to encrypt and decrypt what were the forerunners of today's emails. Others scrambled phone calls. The "red phone" was mainly used by Gen. Charles A. (Chuck) Horner, who went on to lead the air campaign of the 1991 Gulf War, Desert Shield.

They did (and still do) a lot of testing at Holloman AFB, so we also had smaller devices, used to encrypt missile telemetry. About the size of a pack of cigarettes, they flew in both AMRAAM and Patriot missiles.

The fighters also had devices that encrypted their radios. Different people worked on those, but they still sent me to school to learn how to repair them anyway...

Linux Lite ONLY Screenshots please folks, I've already had to delete one post from another distro. I certainly wouldn't go on the Ubuntu forums and say, 'hey, check out my Gentoo screenshot'.  >:(

ever seen alien during your service in New Mexico?
 ;D
or at least UFO?

Title: Re: Post Your Desktop Screenshots!
Post by: N4RPS on May 11, 2014, 10:59:27 AM
Hello!

Nope, didn't see any UFOs, and the only aliens I saw were illegal ones trying to sneak in from Mexico. Holloman Air Force Base is outside Alamogordo - about 100 mi/160 km west of Roswell, which is where the UFO crashed.

However, I DID get to see Trinity Site in 1985, on the 40th anniversary of the explosion - one of the few times the area has been opened up for the public to see. We also had a lot of pilots qualifying for duty with the Thunderbirds (the Air Force air acrobatic team), so we were treated with an airshow every Wednesday at lunchtime.

We owe our knowledge of the transistor and subsequent technologies such as LSI (large scale integration, which is how microprocessors are created), fiber optics, and surface-mount technology - all of which make our modern-day electronic devices possible - to that alien spacecraft found outside Roswell in '47. These discoveries were all released to the world through Bell Labs in New Jersey - the outfit responsible for reverse-engineering the UFO, to glean new technologies from it...

yes, i believe that too,
from primitive airplanes  that could barely fly short distances few meters off ground to landing on moon, in only 70 years.
that is massive technological jump.

Hello, All!

Here's a LL 2.0 beta screenshot from my HP netbook. The picture shows two USAF F-15 Eagles (three, most likely - after all, SOMEBODY took the photo!) from the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, based at Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland, shadowing a Russian Tu-95 Bear bomber.

Back in the day, the AF wanted to send me there. Iceland was just too doggone cold, so since I had yet to re-enlist, I didn't have enough time to complete a tour there before my term of service ended. Therefore, they could not send me there. I later found out that they sent one of my tech school buddies there instead. (I hope he enjoyed himself there!)

I held out on re-enlisting until they offered to send me some place I was comfortable serving at for two years, which was Sembach AB, (West) Germany. I looked it up on Wikipedia recently, and found out that the US Army has now taken the base over. Germany kicked the US Army out of Mannheim (30 mi./50 km to the east), so they're moving the military prison there...

Linux Lite 2.0 (Clean):

In case anyone was wondering, I used an Xubuntu start icon for the Xfce Whisker menu.
No problem with the Linux Lite logo, it's just an aesthetic decision for the light panel.  :)

Rob

Hi Rob, I'm not sure what the best way to package them is (I'm open to suggestions) but I will try to post everything I have used below in case it helps anyone!

1. Desktop > Background: The wallpaper is found here (http://i.imgur.com/VThbnbI.jpg) via the Quick Grab Wallpapers thread (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=64.0#msg235)
2. Appearance > Style: The theme is MediterraneanDarkest, found from the MediterraneanNight Series (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/MediterraneanNight+Series?content=156782) (How to install themes/icons can be found at Help Manual > Install Guide > Themes & Icon Sets)
((I also edited some of the colours in the gtk files to make it slightly darker and match the wallpaper - not really sure what I was doing and it isn't necessary but in general I switched any bg_color I found to #000000 and any base_color to #070e14 - my files might not be perfect so I'll only upload them if you really want/need them!))
3. Icons: AwokenWhite - found from Awoken by Alecive on deviantART (http://alecive.deviantart.com/art/AwOken-163570862) ("download the iconset" instructions worked best for me)
4. Mouse: OxegenNeon (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=137109&forumpage=0&PHPSESSID=c996920d00552f61ab0b350cbb9909a4) (I added the file to my .icons folder, then selected it under Mouse and Touchpad > Theme. This worked most of the time but I needed a bug fix here (http://www.computercorrect.com/2012/operating-systems/linux/xubuntu/make-mouse-pointer-changes-persistent-in-xubuntu/) to make the mouse permanently change)
5. Window Manager > Style: Default; Title Alignment: Left
6. Window Manager Tweaks > Compositor: Enable display compositing and show shadows
7. Panel Preferences > Appearance: Solid Color (Black), Alpha 80%
8. Datetime > Right Click > Properties: Layout Format: Time, then date; Date Format: Custom, Enter "%a %d %b";
9. Whisker Menu > Right Click > Properties > Display: Select "Icon" only. Double click the icon and change it to one you prefer for the theme.
(Below are a few I customised in GIMP using the Linux Lite forum logo)
1. (http://i.imgur.com/GQPJJQR.png)2.(http://i.imgur.com/YAmu1og.png)3.(http://i.imgur.com/5QXhu8f.png)
1 and 3 are pretty see-through on the forum but will show up on a darker background e.g. this is 3 on black. (http://i.imgur.com/9YNkIHI.png)
I also gave this tux some Linux Lite wings while I was at it (this is also a non-functional requirement  ::))
10. That's all of the main stuff I can think of for now. Any other things I might have left out are probably achieved by similarly right clicking things and/or Googling as that is how I somehow ended up here. ;D But if anyone needs any more help I will try my best to point in the right direction!

That's a bit of really nice theming you've got going on.  Reminds me of a rainy day in winter.

Found this one online...

Smart looking dark theme.  I like how it contrasts with the new lighter background.  The overall look is bold yet smart at the same time.

MacOS look 2.0. Still Linux Lite logo for Whisker menu on each end of dock because I like the balance. DMZ (black) 48 mouse, BleuFear theme (borrowed from Spatry's Manjaro), and Gnome-Brave (like blue folders like he used but prefer wire mesh trash can like MacOS) and Manjaro wallpaper that I customized. Nothing under File Manager window. No dock app just Xfce panel customization. Tux icon for Extreme Tux Racer instead of fish icon.

Like the leather Manjaro wallpaper but can't figure out how to change Manjaro to Linux Lite or Linux. http://tefrem34.deviantart.com/art/Black-Leather-Manjaro-Wallpaper-363625508 (http://tefrem34.deviantart.com/art/Black-Leather-Manjaro-Wallpaper-363625508) ;D

I imagine books could be written about all the different ways to use Conky setups. Perhaps someone who has played with it extensively will write a tutorial about how to incorporate some of the more elaborate ones...

Previous Croc screeny shows Conky ram showing with 3.16 kernel.
This screeny shows 3.13 kernel ram showing in conky which is the correct reading.

(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/313kernel.png) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/313kernel.php)

If you look at my conky in my 1st screeny. The persistent usb. With kernel 3.13. Conky shows all 2 gig of ram I had installed . This netbook runs OK on lite 2.0 with 2 gig of ram so I will leave the 2 gig stick
in my other netbook which is a Chromebook.

Edit: The Lion Screeny with the 3.15 kernel shows all 4 gig of ram on my Compaq Cq57 Laptop that Linux Lite 2.0 was just installed on. So the 3.15 kernel seems OK for correct ram detection.

Thanks for your reply Scott(o). Don't mind saying this took me quite awhile to get right...being a Noob to Linux and more so with LL2. These are the kinds of images that spark my interest , they appeal to me because of the abstract nature and inherent elegance they impart.

Here is my more recent attempt.
I followed the theme tutorial by "l337n1nj4" (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=668.0), and the Linux Lite help manual (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html#themes)
I followed the mouse theme tutorial by  "gold_finger" (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=381.msg1993#msg1993), I used the  OpenZone 1.2.3 Theme (http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/OpenZone?content=111343)
The wallpaper is from Noobslab (http://www.noobslab.com/2012/08/download-black-wallpapers-new-collection.html)
I followed the information from "Scott(0)" (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=515.msg4240#msg4240) and d/l the pdf of "The Linux Command Line", I show a few of the first commands I have practiced from this book in screenshot.
I experimented and altered the panel size a little narrower.
I found how to alter the Terminal by looking around in its menu tabs.

Desktop is out of this world! (see what I did there) :) Who's the gigolo in the top right hand corner?
Spotify - We have a section for suggestions - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?board=3.0 Pop it in there so we have a record of it in the right place. If we get enough people asking for it, it will go in (providing it is simple enough to set up).

For the anything new section, see here - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?board=18.0 eg. Lite Backup will undergo development soon. The rest of our software is listed there too accompanied by regular updates.

Can't post, message states pic too large, don't know how to solve that, thanx.

You can resize the image:  BBCode.org: Posting images (http://www.bbcode.org/examples/?id=10)

For example, here is your image resized and made clickable (to show full size):

That's true, I use imgur myself.  However, manually resizing can still be useful.

On older 4:3 screens (and smaller 16:9 screens on phones/tablets) the forums default resizing to 800x600 causes the right side of the image to be cut off.  You have to either scroll right on the image or use Right Click > View Image (or tap to open in another window).

I'm guessing it should help pages load faster too.
Title: Re: Post Your Desktop Screenshots!
Post by: Mike on December 05, 2014, 12:26:48 PM
True. It's too bad the default img tag doesn't default to those dimensions when using the editor buttons. I suppose if the forum had a responsive css file then it wouldn't matter.

Some tips for everyone who likes trasparent panels. Linux Lite 2.2
(http://i.imgur.com/UXWui8D.png)
right-click > panel > panel preferences
Select 'Items' tab and then double click on the 'Window Buttons.'
Here you will see an option 'Show flat buttons' If you enable that your window buttons that are not active will become transparent.
Some other tips since you opened this :)
Window Grouping - is set to 'Never' by default, you can change that to 'Always' if you want to group your opened windows buttons on the panel. If you turn it on and open' let's say 3 firefox windows, only one window button will appear with this label 'Firefox (3)'. When you click on that menu pops up and you can choose one of the windows.
Middle Click Action - set to 'Nothing' as default. I like to to change it to 'Minimize Window'. That way when I click on the window button on the panel with the middle button on my mouse, widow will minimize to the panel. Unfortunatelly this doesn't work on grouped window buttons when I enable 'Window Grouping'. The other option you can choose for the 'Middle click action' is to close the window with the middle mouse button 'Close window'.
Draw window frame when hovering a button -does what it says, very cool option, and I like it.
Show only minimized windows - I would not use that one.
Let's continue. Go back to the 'Panel Preferences' double-click on 'Workspace Swither', Workspace Swither window dialog opens.
'Show miniature view' - miniature view doesn't look too nice on a transparent panel so I've switched that off. Also number of rows to 2 seems to look ok,
Once more, back to the 'Panel Preferences' and double-click on a 'Notification Area' , and window dialog opens. Here there is an option to 'Show frame' on a notification area icon. I switched that off so it looks better on the panel.

Hello,
I have a few questions about the transparent panels.
1/how is the frame around the keyboard icon and the two workspace icons made transparent please ?
2/ how to colour the workspaces so the currently used workspace matches the icon colour and the other one is transparent ?

Then just the left icon is "Menu" in white and the right is the clock in white so they balance each other.

Post by: anon222 on January 15, 2015, 08:37:06 PM
Cheers fellows.
bitsnpcs,
1/how is the frame around the keyboard icon and the two workspace icons made transparent please ?
Right-click on the panel > Panel preferences...
A window dialog opens, now choose 'Items' tab to open a list of everything you have on the panel. You'll see 'Notification Area' on the list. Double-click on that to open a new dialog titled 'Notification Area'.
You'll see that 'Show Frame' is marked. Unmark that and Frame will go away.
2/ how to colour the workspaces so the currently used workspace matches the icon colour and the other one is transparent ?
In the list double-click on the 'Workspace Swither' and when a dialog shows up, unmark 'Show miniature view'.  You can also change 'Number of rows' to 2.

Hello bitsnpcs, you are welcome.
You have awesome looking desktop over there.
One of my desktops. Ever since I saw the HD pic of the Andromeda galaxy it has blown my mind - in this minute portion of that galaxy, each small dot is a star!
That's great, Hable must have taken 150 photos and they were merged later. It looks like it's only a part of the Andromeda galaxy. Since galaxies are so big the light that comes from one part of the galaxy is late a few thousend years. But it doesn't matter because it takes milions of years for the light to reach the Earth. It's like seeing how did the galaxy looked like in the past. Scientists can only calculate where the galaxy is right now.
Thanks for sharing the screenshot and the link.

Hello zygmunto,
Thank You for the tutorial :) , I have followed it and swapped the screenshot above to show it, I moved the new icon for Workspaces next to the time & date.
I used Gimp's color picker on the heart to use for the text color.

Thanks altman :)

Thank You misko, it is the most beautiful desktop I have ever had :) , thanks to you and zygmunto.

If anyone would like me to post the wallpaper with or without the text, I can post it?

Yup, love the old Mercedes Diesels! I would like to acquire one to run on either Used Cooking Oil from deep fat fryers at fast food restaurants or on BioDiesel. I am sort of an environmentalist, but I certainly don't go around hugging trees all the time, lol. That's my main reason, and partially also for the million mile (1.6 Kilometres +) reliability track-record these diesel engines are known for [OM616 / OM617 Engines].

Hello!

My brother has several of them. Most of them reside in a warehouse. Only one sits in his garage - his favorite, an early 70s vintage W113 Pagoda 60SL he calls 'Mercy'. According to him, it is one of only four left in the world. The color of it looks like a cup of coffee with cream in it.

He has restored it several times. Last year, he had it shipped to Germany, where it won first place at a number of car shows. IIRC, he even had it restored again while it was over there.

I will have him send a picture of it to me. When I get it from him, I'll post it here...

I used it until somewhere 2002 I think.

Thanks ukbrian, I will look into saline, but it has to backup įnd install a new system off and on every partition or pc with another architecture like the livecd/dvd/usb, or else I simply use the very nice Clonezilla. :D

I still have it in VBox, I still think it was the best in terms of performance & stability.
For nostalgia I have all my family of MS stuff in VBox, MS DOS 6.22 was the hardest to get networked,
It will read from my NAS, but not write, and I tinker now and then to try and get a DOS Browser working.

My desktop with customized panels,1st panel covers the left 88%of the bottom of the screen. The 2nd panel takes up the right 12% and has the notification area, indicators, and clock. I used two panels so I can have different look for each, although they are set the same at the moment.

Thanks altman, I like trying different looks in xfce panels. Xfce panels being so easy to configure is one of the many reasons for me liking Linux Lite.

@Unlimity
Wow! That's beautiful. Great work.
Thanks, but like I said, I'm still tweaking it, I'm a beginner with GNU/Linux, I was looking for many themes, but numix seemed as the only one perfect to me, I think a lot of people are making "forks" of it. I'm sure there will be some nice other themes. You can add official PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:numix/ppa

You can also try non-official Numix Redux http://xaahudude.deviantart.com/art/Numix-Redux-GTK3-Theme-374080494 It says it's a fork of Numix Dark, but the only change I saw were window borders, nothing dark like on the picture. I guess it works only with GTK3, Gnome or something.

But I love Numix's Black and Orange style.
People are even making unofficial Numix styles for Windows.
There are many beautiful things on deviantart, from wallpapers, to styles, fonts, icons, etc...

http://0rax0.deviantart.com/art/Numix-Dance-441809850
http://www.deviantart.com/art/Numix-Redux-Fedora-21-Workstation-516139847

Looking at all the beautiful Numix desktops on deviantart, my setup is nothing special. :P

Hello!

Nice theme!

I just might have to try Dark Cold Master. As of late, I've developed an interest in dark themes. The closest theme I could find is Dark Mint.

I know they make LiveDVDs larger, but one thing I'd like to see packaged in the future are more themes - some extra looks to choose from...

The computer shortcut opens "Drives" and I've learned how to do this using Linux Lite.
If you click in "Drives" you'll see the path is "computer:///", so the my way to do this is by right-clicking in the desktop area, and choose "Create launcher"... Then you give the name you want to the shortcut, you comment what you want and use the command "/usr/bin/thunar computer:///" (there is a space between thunar and computer). Finally you choose the icon you want. Click save and go to the properties of the shortcut (by right clicking on it), and check the "Allow to execute this file as a program" option in the Permisson tab.

The icon theme is the xubuntu-icon-theme.

FYI for Xbox 360 controllers---> I posted how to get them running for anyone new to linux.
No rings of death for me ! I finally got rid of my Xbox 360 and used my controller on LL 2.6 with Steam.

Hello all, hope I've followed your forum guidelines correctly. For whatever reason, I suppose I was trying to go with an old Gnome Ubuntu look here (sorry) ::)

On Left, is LVDS (Distortion @ bottom is an artifact);
gtk - Zukitwo-Dark-reloaded
icons - Vibrancy-Full-Dark-Pink
background - Ubuntu
Whisker theme - Just my own tweaking to match rest of gtk theme.
Panel - relocated to top & adjusted to approximate old Ubuntu gnome panel

On Right, my VGA with matching purple Ubuntu background with Terminal, G+ and Thunar open.  :)

The answer is simple: you didn't know better. You had what you had back in those days and that was it!

Same goes for me. Some months ago i installed Windows 98 in a VM and installed Duke Nukem 3D just for good old times. Horrible  screen resolution! But that's what you had to deal with when Duke 3D was released....

I needed something windowsish to help me be comfortable. Theme was windows 10 dark but icons gave me errors so win 7 icons and ended up matte kinda because compositor is off but liked it and nice on the eyes. Sorry but not exactly sure what I'm doing lmao and that's how it ended up. Just loving the os though and and knowing i can reinstall in like 20 minutes gives me freedom to experiment.

How DID you get Lite Control Center running?  (https://postimg.org/image/ekiq8rqst/)
Edit: Weird. My above link takes me to my screenshot on post image. But if I copy and and paste into a blank search box on firefox. It takes me to the manual.
So if you have the same problem. Just copy and paste the above url to a blank search box on new tab. Hit enter. It should take to Linux-Lite online help manual. Or just use yours in your menu and go to customize panel.

Read the transparent section thoroughly.  Including the links inserted in the sentences there.

Yes, the custom menu image size is important depending on your preferences. Allow me to explain:

1- You may want the menu button to increase its size with the panel and other icons. If so, you want to go with an image with up to 128x128:

2- You may not want the menu button to increase its size (which is what I prefer) with the panel and other icons. I prefer my menu icon to match the Menu text size and therefore I use a 22x22 image instead.

Still on LL2 with Ubuntu 14.04. Procrastinating because I got the wacom pen and touchscreen dialed in like I want it. Problem is. I can't remember what I did , over a span of  years ago. Dell XT2 Touchscreen when I joined this forum.

This is a little event we do on the LDC forums, so we spread the love to this forum! Post away! Screenshots have to be strictly Linux Lite.

i have my own photo of my cat as my Linux wallpaper, can i still share a screen shot of my desktop ?,

I'm pretty sure the warning is to prevent posting of other things than your Linux Desktop.
If your cat is in a Linux Interface Wallpaper it should be fine but a photo of your cat ONLY would not. ;)

Hi Folks

Just want to share my customized desktop with you.

Resolution: 1366x768
DE: XFCE
WM: Xfwm4
WM Theme: NumixBLUE-2.0.2
GTK Theme: Greybird [GTK2]
Icon Theme: Numix-Circle
Font: Droid Sans 10
Dock: Plank
Wallpaper: RAVE-Cube-Wallpaper-Collection (Ise-de-Nior)

I used Xfce Panel Switch with Theme Configuration (xfpanel-switch and gtk-theme-config - both available in the repositories) to create my own personal choice of alternative menu types to use (Whisker Menu and 'Pipe Menu').

I used Xfce Panel Switch with Theme Configuration to create the alternative 'Pipe Menu' by adapting the Xfce Panel Switch Gnome 2 default theme. I used Theme Configuration to create the black menu background and white text.

I'm using Numix-Circle Icon Theme

Numix Folders
can be found in Synaptic Package Manager once you've downloaded and installed the Numix icons. Customize folders' style and color as you wish.

My Theme Configuration 'custom menu color' choice of black background also creates black drop-down panel menus but retains contrasting white backgrounds for open windows and folders.

I hope you like my desktop customizations.

I also hope you didn't find this posting too long-winded and indulgent.

Thanks for viewing!

MacOs look. LL logo on each end of dock because one is XFCE menu on left and Whisker menu on right. Haven't decided which I like best.

i love this screen shot, hope you dont mind if i use it as desktop wallpaper on Linux lite 4.0, i just need to crop a small bottom portion of the image out , thanks for sharing

You can get the original wallpaper you like here -

http://scott53.imgur.com/

Courtesy of Scott.

You'll find the wallpaper you want under the Linux Lite 1.0.6 archive in the link - second wallpaper from the bottom. No need for trimming.

Just right-click 'Save Image As'. Once saved, right-click 'Set as wallpaper'.

A big thanks to Scott for the archive! :)

Enjoy.
