Don't change a thing, Jerry. I'm in the process of reading some older threads to "catch up" since it has been so long since I was on here regularly. Sorry about the absence, but sometimes life gets in the way. Then add the fact that Lite "just works" with zero glitches,,,,,, well you get the idea.

I  have ver 3.8 on 2 laptops and just installed ver 4.2 on the desktop in my hobby room/man cave. It's still in "as installed" form. I have a few programs I'll change and then make a few tweaks to the appearance to suit me, but I'll be running that desktop with ver 4.x on it for 4 or 5 years, I expect. Other than updates there will be no changes made. I see no need. It does, "just work" and work well.

Many thanks to you and the guys for your efforts.  8)
Steve

Jerry, I have to agree. The way you've got Linux Lite buttoned down configuration wise makes it difficult to work with. I understand why you do things this way and certainly don't argue with it. Given the audience you're targeting Linux Lite is a great option.

Installing and running an alternate DE in Linux Lite is doable, but it's not easy and it doesn't work well. The best option is to leave Linux Lite as is and work with another lightweight Debian based distro, like MX Linux for example, that allows endless configuration options including substituting other DE's for Xfce.

Wish you and Linux Lite all the best as the year goes by Jerry.

Just get a distro with the DE already on it. I'd rather not lock this, I'm just going to assume folks here have the common sense to end this discussion.

@George S Rasmussen  Last year, in a VM just like you're doing I installed awesome-wm in LL and faced the exact same problem you're experiencing now; couldn't find a way to choose either to log in to xfce or awesome from lightdm, however, after some reading and trials and errors I did manage to get it by replacing/removing the xfce .desktop file but then I couldn't log in to xfce. Maybe, there's a way to get lightdm to offer the option but I wasn't able to do it and to be honest I think it's not worth the time and effort since there are many other distros around I can do just the same without all the hassle, i.e Antix; lightweight, Debian based, and offer the possiblity to choose from different DEs to install, Antergos is another one that does the same, you can choose from 7 different DEs at the install, and if you like getting your hands "dirty" you could try Arch and install as many DEs as you want. Here's the link to that post I created here regarding awesome-wm in LL https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/desktop-customization/awsome-wm-on-ll/msg42927/#msg42927

Hope this helps! :)

..It's hard to remember what was yesterday for lunch. This was four years ago with Linux Lite 2.0. Probably changed something with Lightdm.

From my experiance people in the community think that if you install another desktop environment distro/respin breaks.
Some even say that if Gnome is installed then it's no longer that distro. Guys at antiX linux for example. :)
So if you install and use something that is taboo on the forums you most likely will not get support...

Thanks Misko. I'm not looking for official support per se, just for any hint you can offer relative to installing and running the Mate' desktop on Linux Lite. Having seen photos of your results 4 years ago it's obvious that doing so was possible at that time, and I imagine it still is today. I'm not looking to 'break' anything or create a different distro, just trying to see what Linux Lite 4.2 would be like running the Mate' desktop instead of Xfce, running in a Virtualbox.

In the past I used Gnome 2.x exclusively, and once Mate' was introduced I used it on all my Debian/Ubuntu based systems. In MX Linux I've replaced Xfce with Mate' with flawless results. While I can install Mate' on Linux Lite 4.2 with Synaptic, apparently the option to choose Mate' (or any other DE instead of Xfce) at the login screen has been crippled - for what reason I can only guess. Obviously there's a way to change that and whether or not I find help doing so here in the forum I will figure it out, reporting my results as I go along as you did 4 years ago.

Honestly I think, from what your photos reveal and from my own long time experience running Gnome 2.x and Mate' on all my systems, that Linux Lite running the Mate' desktop would be a great combination, something worth exploring in depth.

I truly hope you're able to contribute to this experiment in a positive way Misko, with any suggestions that might help me get past the login screen hangup I'm presently experiencing.

Thanks much!

Mister Jerry, keep focus on your mission. You are doing well. I've tried many distros and nothing compare to LL.  It's simple, fast and free.

I've tried many distros via virtualbox and several DEs and always find xfce to be the best, maybe outperformed for KDE since it has a lot of features that I really enjoy but not as customizable, at least in my experience which to be honest was rather short. I even installed awesome-wm in LL last year since is keyboard oriented and I really love that, but then lightdm didn't showed the option to log in, I managed to do so but then I couldn't log in to xfce, so after some trials and errors I understood LL wasn't made for people who wanted to experiment with this; so let LL be! which is just perfect the way it is. If you don't like it then by all means try another one since there's plenty out there for you to choose. Now, if you want a rock-solid stable foolproof system which doesn't get in your way and works out the box then LL is most likely what you want.

I support you distro's mission statement and usage of xfce for the DE.  It is lightweight and works great on older hardware and is highly configurable.  It is a great choice for what you have created here.  Thanks for your work.

I tried Linux Mint with its cinnamon DE and quickly shifted back to LL.  I have used linux extensively about 10 years ago, but still consider this distro the best all around for ease of use and for what it is targeted toward.

This operating system has one purpose. To introduce linux to people who haven't used it before.

I repeat, 'This operating system'...oh why bother.

There still seems to be many people who still don't understand this, despite being around for long enough. And because of arrogance, and or ignorance, they never will get it. Why would we spend hundreds of hours supporting another DE that has not had any time spent on it by our Dev's? It's tantamount to disrespect to ask me if I'll help you with another DE on Linux Lite. I support our software base, our DE and our custom software, that's all. I'm simply going to direct your attention to why, and leave it at that. If that is unacceptable, I don't care.

If you're going to try and counter-argue this message, then it's just more proof that you just don't get it. I don't apologize for being so direct here, after all this time, it seems the language needs to be clearer.

Christmas was yesterday and tomorrow is slava, and in sunday we wait for New Year. I will look into it some time after that.
Things have changed since then. Mate is now ported to Gtk3 and xfce4 is about 85% ported to Gtk3.

Linux Lite 2.0 with MATE desktop and mint Menu.

Just an experiment.

Misko, thanks for the photos you posted with the Mate' desktop environment running on Linux Lite. I'd like to do the same. I've completely installed Mate' using Synaptic, but on reboot at the login screen there's no apparent option to select and run Mate' instead of Xfce in LL 4.2.

Any help you or anyone else might give so I can select the already installed Mate' desktop at login would be greatly appreciated. ..Thanks!
