Title: Linux Lite 6.0 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on May 31, 2022, 04:16:00 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 6.0 Final is now available for download and installation.

The theme of this Series is inclusion and freshness. The newest Browser, the newest Office suite, the newest custom software. It's always been my goal to provide a lean, fully functioning operating system. In Series 6x this will be our ongoing focus. New to this release are Assistive Technologies. In the form of a screen reader, a desktop magnifier and a virtual keyboard. All tools that ensures our hearing and sight impaired community is no longer forgotten. A new Theme, a new System Monitor and Manager round out the main new features.

See below for details.

Introducing Linux Lite 6.0 Final Codename Fluorite.

Changes:

New Window theme: Materia

Materia is the new window theme. Keeping that familiar appearance, Materia is regularly maintained and it supports GTK 2, GTK 3, GTK 4, GNOME Shell, Budgie, Cinnamon, MATE, Unity, Xfce, LightDM, GDM, Chrome theme, etc. Materia comes in both Light and Dark themes.

Assistive Technologies - Onscreen Keyboard + Screen Reader + Screen Magnifier

It's a well known fact that we target Windows users. Out of the box, Windows offers a fairly complete system. That includes tools for the hearing and sight impaired. In this release you can zoom in on the desktop, have a screen reader talk to you and complete tasks with an onscreen keyboard. We've made all of these functions highly configurable.

Onscreen Keyboard: Onboard

The onscreen keyboard application is Onboard. On-screen virtual keyboard is an alternative input method that can replace a real hardware keyboard. Virtual keyboard may be a necessity in various cases. For example, your hardware keyboard is just broken; you do not have enough keyboards for extra machines; your hardware does not have an available port left to connect a keyboard; you experience difficulty in typing on a real keyboard; or you are building a touchscreen-based web kiosk.

Screen Reader: Orca

Orca is a free and open-source, flexible, extensible screen reader from the Gnome project for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Using various combinations of speech synthesis and braille, Orca helps provide access to applications.

If you select Orca Settings, it will be enabled, you have been warned. Just Open System Monitor and kill the Task if it annoys you, use Insert key + S, or simply Logout/in. If you want it to autostart when you start your computer, go to Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab and tick the Orca box.

Insert+S toggle speech on and off.

Screen Magnifier: Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel

Fairly self explanatory. Zoom in on any part of the desktop with the Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel key combo.

New Default Web Browser: Google Chrome

Now that Firefox comes as a Snap package from Ubuntu, and Windows users need to be able to deal with as few package managers as possible, Chrome was the obvious replacement choice. Huge market share, Windows familiarity, just about everything you throw at it just works, all with the backing of a little known company called Google. Web browsers are highly subjective, everyone has their favorite and everyone has an opinion. You can't please everyone, but what we can do is remain focused on our target audience and that's exactly what we did. We also include a built in Virus Scanner to Chrome supplied by Virus Total (disabled by default). Now Chrome will ask you if you'd like a file scanned before you open it. To enable this feature, just turn it On under Chrome Extensions.

Firefox is available to download and install via Lite Software. Just keep in mind it will install the Snap package system, so expect extra bloat and slow downs. Because Firefox is tied to Snap as a service, it won't appear in your Menu until you have rebooted.

Installing Firefox pure deb package (PPA):

Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/ppa
Copy and paste the entire block (not line by line):

Code: [Select]
echo '
Package: *
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-mozillateam
Pin-Priority: 1001
' | sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/mozilla-firefox

Copy and paste the entire block (not line by line):

Code: [Select]
echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins:: "LP-PPA-mozillateam:${distro_codename}";' | sudo tee /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-firefox
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install firefox
New Grub menu:

Memtest no longer appears in the Grub menu. With so many PE and bootable tech tools out there now, it seems like an unnecessary added extra that I doubt even 5% of people ever used. New look Live Grub below now has Restart, Shutdown as well as the usual options.

LibreOffice

A new approach. With LibreOffice in this Series, we will now provide the latest version with every release. Eg. When we release 6.2, we will make sure the latest stable LibreOffice is provided. No longer will we lag behind for the duration of a Series. In between each release, that version will stay static. It will only be updated with each inner Series upgrade. It will not be the 'early adopter' version (as shown below) but the latest stable as shown in red. We'll review this process as time goes on, and it's possible we could use something like Lite Patch (see below) to deploy updates even sooner.

Lite Patch:

We used to get Lite Software to do all the heavy lifting here, but now with it's own package, emergency fixes can be applied super quick.

System Monitoring Center: replaces Task Manager and Process Viewer

Gone is the Task Manager and Process Viewer, replaced by a tool that does both jobs and more. Htop is still installed, just no longer on the Menu.
We've forked the new System Monitoring Center to provide more specific information regarding Linux Lite (see the System tab).
With System Monitoring Center, you get information about your CPU, RAM, Disk, Network and GPU. You also get Performance, Processes, Startup, Services and System tools and information in one easy to use, highly configurable application. This is one of the nicest, most sensible applications I have seen on the free software world for a long time, and we are lucky to have it.

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/)

Details:

Kernel: 5.15.0-33 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.18 )
Chrome: 102.0
Thunderbird: 91.9.1
LibreOffice: 7.2.7.2
VLC: 3.0.16
Gimp: 2.10.30
Base: 22.04

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Dropbox (Lite Software): if you get an error, run the set up twice.
OEM Install option - is broken and crashes near the end of the install. If a fix can't be found, it will be excluded from each release until a solution if found.
There is NO Grub Edit in Lite Tweaks in this Series for Linux Lite due to an ongoing issue. Ubuntu will show in the Grub menu if you are dual or more booting. Try Grub Customizer if it annoys you.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. See below for more on this.

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

Grub - press the ESC key whilst booting in UEFI mode after your BIOS has posted. Use the SHIFT key if running Linux Lite in Legacy mode.

Chrome icon remove - right click on Chrome icon on the Taskbar, select Remove, Taskbar crashes and disappears.
Multiple workarounds:
Right-click on panel : Panel -->Panel Preferences... -->tab Items --> select launcher --> click Remove
You also have Lite Tweaks, Taskbar Restore (ignore any errors).
Logging out also restores the Taskbar. Right click on the Desktop, Applications, Log Out, Log Out.
Bug is on another distros Forum, so it will be reported to the XFCE Devs.

You tell me.

Yes, it's our biggest ISO to date, software evolves and gains more features, that's what happens. Linux Lite still boots to 520mb of used memory on your average system so we are still Lite, and still half the size of a Windows 11 ISO with arguably more useful off the Menu features.

Checking the MD5SUM and SHA256 of the Linux Lite ISO:

MD5SUM
Open a Terminal on Linux Lite and do:

Code: [Select]
md5sum linux-lite-6.0-64bit.iso

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 4gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-6.0-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) or https://rufus.ie/ (https://rufus.ie/)
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Reviewers in a VirtualBox:

Installing Updates does work with a Live ISO (ignoring the 'CDROM' errors). All features work as they should, once you have installed Linux Lite to hardware or a VM.
Once Linux Lite has been installed, add the following for a complete reviewing experience:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11
Don't forget the Guest Additions too!
Also, get the Extensions pack from here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)

Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

Thank you and enjoy :)

Jerry and the team.

Hi, what do you mean by "There is no upgrade path from Series to Series"?
I had Lite 6.0 Release Candidate, now I tried apt dist-upgrade but nothing happens. Can you confirm that by a simple apt upgrade I have 6.0 Final, now?

Release Candidate's are for testing only, therefore there is no upgrade path.
"There is no upgrade path from Series to Series" eg. Series 5x to Series 6x.

Ok so you mean a fresh install of 6.0 final is the only option? Maybe it's a noob question, but why is this the case, if both releases share the same Ubuntu repo (namely jammy) and the same version for all installed packages?

I found minor bug. Right click menu still shows task manager, that no longer works. How change that and put new system monitor in that place?

Seen a couple of posts which seem to suggest changing the Display Scale away from 1x caused an immediate lock up requiring a reboot and subsequent problems starting the GUI. Not tried it myself but there doesn't appear to be a "keep changes/auto-revert" confirmation involved.

Hi, I just installed LL6.0, two things:
1: Gdebi is broken, and Synaptic can't reinstall it, is there any fix for it?
2: Grub Customizer is not in repository, how to get it?
Thank you

1. That's a little vague. What do you mean 'broken'. Please outline the steps, or it can't be addressed properly.
2. Grub Customizer is not supported yet in the 22.04 base - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1404445/grub-customizer-missing-from-ubuntu-22-04 PPA - https://launchpad.net/%7Edanielrichter2007/+archive/ubuntu/grub-customizer

Thanks Jerry, I did find this article myself later on, installed Grub Customizer, but it didn't work like it did in LL 5. I was able to change the boot order, but it did not pick up my background (PNG)image. I put it in both- boot/grub/themes and usr/share/backgrounds. Not sure what the right folder to put it...
I also tried Lightgdm settings, it didn't work either.
Gdebi: when I do update in terminal, it says two pkgs can be upgraded. So I do upgrade, then it says gdebi, gdebi-core held back. In Synaptic I try to reinstall them, it says fix broken pkgs first, then I get a "missing pendency" error. I'm not very good at these things, but it would be nice to have Gdebi.
Thank you for your reply!

Open a separate support thread for your gdebi issue. It will be related only to you, it's working perfectly normal here. Cheers.

This is one of the most straightforward, clear, complete and easy-to-follow pages on an operating system and how to install it, if not the most, that I have ever come across. Thank you!

Going to give this OS a bash on an old Toshiba Satellite A-200 with 3GB RAM and which came loaded with (sick bags at the ready...) Windows Vista. This laptop served me for years as a social media coordinator, and has run anything from Puppy Linux to Zorin to Q4 Centaurus and Windows 7 and 10 (the latter which runs surprisingly well). Currently running a dual boot of Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.1, so it will be interesting to see how Linux Lite compares.

Release Announcement
Linux Lite 6.0 Final is now available for download and installation. [...]
Hi! :)
I started using it since 31-05-2022.
(In România, seems to appear earlier than elsewhere.)
From "top to toes", worked wonderful, from the beginning! Thanks!
I even installed it on an external HDD, to test it before erasing the previous install (LL 5.8. ).
I even plan to install it on my wife's new laptop (now, runs LL 5.8 ), an ASUS-M415U (AMD Ryzen 7, 6 cores, 12 threads, 8 GB RAM + SSD).
I'll come back with news since there is a "clinch": the WiFi chipset requires a driver from AMD so a LAN-USB  adapter is required in order to install the driver.

Stars:
I enjoyed the update for Lite Tweaks and Lite Software.
I also noticed that I have the correct OS Version in "System Profiler..." (hardinfo)
Since installation, nothing required special assistance so I guess, "flawless" fits my case.
The average uptime, is 10 hours (maybe one hour, give or take). Never had trouble, so far, since installation.

Thanks a lot! :)

Thanks for the distro. One of the best distro for users coming from Windows. Love disro hoping but always comes back to this. Fast and ready to use. Use it for my programming.

Would like to contribute to distro with my web programming skills (websites) if anyway possible.

That was great!
As if today, it is even greater: Top 10!

Now, given the fact that Linux Lite 6.0 is living it's last month, it is presumable that most users, are waiting for LL 6.2 so at some extent, I can understand the decrease of downloads.
But this very fact is relevant: it tells me that the new users choose Linux Lite over many other distros, that are considered "seasoned" ones.
As for me, I'll take the ride with LL 6.2 from Day One! :D

Thanks, best thoughts and best wishes Jerry, for this great accomplishment!

Title: Upgrade from LinuxLite 5.8 to 6.0
Post by: PrivateTech on September 30, 2022, 01:43:12 AM
Hello,

Thank you for the wonderful new release.

Now, that the LinixLite version 6.0 is released, maybe it is a good idea to stop telling users of the earlier version 5.8 that they have the most current version when they check for an upgrade. It actually surprises some users and they are asking why there is no upgrade available when the new version is released already.

If it cannot be upgraded from 5.8 to 6.0 (very unfortunately and highly anticipated), it would be great to say just that. Something like this:

"A new version 6.0 is released and available but there is currently no path to upgrade from LinuxLite 5.8 to 6.0. It needs to be downloaded and installed from scratch. Alternatively, check later in case if/when it becomes possible."

At least it won't confuse users.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi!

Have you read the entire thread?
You probably missed this:

Release Candidate's are for testing only, therefore there is no upgrade path.
There is no upgrade path from Series to Series" eg. Series 5x to Series 6x.

Here is another one:
When final release is out will I need a new installation from scratch?

Upgrades within a series, i.e. Linux Lite 5.x, are allowed, so no, you won't. However, when Linux Lite 6.x comes out, you will need to install from scratch.

There is also a long list of posts regarding the Updates procedure. Use Forum's Search box with the string:
Code: [Select]
LinuxLite 5.8 to 6.0
Best regards!

When users click on Upgrade, it says that they are running the latest version, which is incorrect and confused some of them. I was asked about it more than once by regular users.

Not every user reads every page of documentation front to back. Many lay people who love using LinuxLite take it literally for what it says without second guessing it.

If the check says “you are running the latest version” they trust it and read it with plain common sense without thinking that there are some more “obvious” untold rules.

They trust what they read and think that there must be something wrong with their installation that it cannot upgrade. They don’t jump reading forums to check for conditions and limitations. For most it doesn’t make much sense, series or not. Why they can upgrade within series but not between series.

If it cannot be done - no problem. That’s how it was designed and I’m not nothing about it. We are all grateful for a lot of hard work with wonderful results.

All I’m saying - just give people consistent message that says all the truth. Maybe educates them a little bit too.

Saying that the current message is misleading is a bit too strong language. I’d rather say… why not educate users and simply say as it is:

Hey, great news! A new version is released! Sorry, the bad news is that you cannot automatically upgrade from your version. You need to reinstall it or look online for manual ways to do it.

And users will be grateful even more for getting accurate information.

Hope it makes sense.

Thanks again for your hard work.

There comes a time when you have to do the work and not rely on your parents to do everything for you, as Serban says it is all laid out for all to see and Jerry shouldn't have to hold their hand and lead them to the information.  I have been using Linux Lite since February 2022, downloaded the ISO for 5.4 according to Jerry's instructions and following those instructions was able to set up dual boot with Windows reading all of the instructions.  During that install it stated that I could only upgrade within a series then I upgraded to 5.8 without any trouble because I followed the well detailed instructions that Jerry spelled out for a novice like me.  Do the work, read the manual, read the tutorials, search the forum where folks like Serban will help you down the path of Linux Lite OS freely.  Just my opinion.

You misunderstood the point. I represent a lot of those who have no voice, no skills, little logic, no computer skills, and don’t read forums. Before you hate them or think about them with disrespect and contempt, think about your grandma for a moment. If you tried to make her life easier but she struggles to understand the “unspoken” part. Think about a school with teachers of non-technical disciplines who hate unpredictable and unexplainable to them technology with passion. Think of a nurse who saved your yours and parents’ lives and you are scolding her for not doing research in computer matters. It’s enough she went through years and years of studying and still keeps up in her field to save your life. Then she has several kids to feed and take care of after she took care of you at work. She just wants things to work and not do research in things she hates with passion. Just like cars. She wants to drive one that doesn’t break, without becoming a car mechanic. She wants to read things and believe what they say. If a car says that the door is open she doesn’t want to read the manual from to back to find out that the light “door open” actually means that she’s out of gas when it’s raining outside. Arrogance and shaming is good among professionals, maybe like you and me. This system actually targets unsuspecting users who want things just work. There are lots of those. Hence, no need to insult their intelligence. Or blame them for ignorance. After all, that nurse studied for over a decade and still pays off her student debt while raising several children and having enough knowledge in her field to save your life when you are admitted into ER. Enough things to worry about in her life before she jumps and reads the difference between what it says and what the reality is. See my point?

This is the first time this topic has been brought up to the best of my knowledge. Could @PrivateTech be talking on behalf of silent users? Possibly, we just won't know. I think you'll find most companies, organizations etc usually only act if there is a measurable amount of feedback. That doesn't also translate to, we should ignore feedback or not implement something if only one person has mentioned it. Every well written suggestion is carefully considered. At this stage, I don't have that sense that I should rush off and do something about this, and again, that doesn't also mean that a change in wording won't occur in the future. Never be afraid to give feedback or opinion, I rely heavily on this community to help me improve this operating system. Thank you all for this discussion. Let's look forward to the 6.2 release, the RC1 is coming very soon :)

Jerry,

Thank you so much for taking your time to even reply.

No, of course it is not a big deal.

No, it is not super important.

Maybe it is not even worth your time as I am sure there are lots of more pressing matters.

No, there is no avalanche of feedback that we experienced. But there were a few, from more than one client of our fairly small company. Yet, we took it as an indication that if we heard of it more than once, there must be others.

I thought I'd share, without any expectation of any change. Just a friendly suggestion, that's all. I am absolutely sure that none of our users would ever research about it online, let alone post on any forums. We help those who certainly won't. That is why I mentioned that I/we represent those without a voice, so to speak.

But in a big picture of course it is a very very minor thing. Just thought I'd contribute by sharing, without criticizing and without any expectations.

Thank you for your hard work and looking forward to the version 6.2 soon.

All the best!

Now torrenting the LL 6.2 RC.

So looking forward to this! For me Lite Tweaks is one of the greatest features among the many offered in this desktop distro. Snapd is disabled, another big plus. Cleaning up systemd logs, which can become huge over time, is another big plus (in Lite Tweaks).

I'll instantly ditch the default browser and Thunderbird and replace them with my old favorite, Seamonkey using a PPA. Other than that and the usual desktop customization I always do with wallpaper and panels, Linux Lite is about as out-of-the-box perfect as any distro I've ever used.  The only reason I keep one alternative Linux distro around is to keep my ancient 32-bit box out of the landfill for as long as I can.

Thanks to Jerry and the Team for this little bundle of awesomeness!

Hi!
It is a way of putting it. Your way.
On the other hand...
Does it write here somewhere that this is a forum for babysitters and nurses and... (etc.), who want to use Linux without learning anything?
Think again!
Even a washing machine, or a coffee expressor has a manual and you are supposed to read it, BEFORE COMPLAINING it works bad, or it got broke.
This is the point!

And here is another perspective:
Want to have everything at a turn-key, or "one click away" 24/7/365? OK. Go back to Windows. They claim they do this. So, why bother with Linux (whatever distro...)?
Or, maybe use a Mac Air. They claim the same.

The way you put things together is offensive for many of the people around here, who spent countless hours learning and then sharing their knowledge -- be them savvy or beginner.
They all put sweat besides knowledge into their posts. For free! What about the countless answers to questions that are already answered in the Linux Lite manual? Or in the forum posts?

Think deeper when you post something. Anything.. And mostly, speak for yourself. It is a matter of self-respect. Nobody here asked you to be "the voice of the many". They can speak for themselves, as we all do here.

[...]Before you hate them or think about them with disrespect and contempt[...]

Nobody hates and/or disrespects you, or anyone else, for that matter.
But it looks like YOU DO THIS, by throwing false accusations and claims unsupported with evidence.

I am a self-taught computer user and I think I know well enough what it means to give up your sleep or skip a meal or two, or maybe more, just to buy a book you need or want, in order to learn something. Anything! And this is how it goes, with everything! Including Linux or any other skill you want to have and use. You have to grow it inside you.
I started to learn computers by myself in 1995. Long time ago, old story. So, before telling me, or US a story of a lazy user, who expects a computer to work by itself by just pressing a button, hear, listen my story too. It is very much like many other stories of many people here, on this forum.

Best regards!

I like the idea of the reminder...
Whether it be upon an click of Lite Upgrade..
"Your system has reached the end of the series look for a new versions coming..."

Or similarly on Lire Welcome.. or a step further  a notice of end of life??

For a Windows user the next release is media heavy whether you follow tech or not... A notice of sorts isn't a bad idea.
