Brand new Linux Lite Repository - Cost free

A HUGE thank you to Thomas and the team over at www.fosshost.org (http://www.fosshost.org) for their time and generosity. We will forever be grateful to them for reaching out to us with this offer.

Many other tweaks and changes.

Window Theme: Adapta
Icon Theme: Papirus
Font: Roboto Regular

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then thatís the firmware youíre running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/)

Details:

Kernel: 5.4.0-52 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.9 )
Firefox: 82.0
Thunderbird: 68.10.0
LibreOffice: 6.4.6.2
VLC: 3.0.9.2
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04.1

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - holding shift down whilst booting in UEFI mode does not bring up the Grub menu (works in Legacy mode), waiting for Ubuntu fix.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite':

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

You tell me.

Upgrading

There has been some tweaks to the Lite Upgrade code from Series 4.x. Most notably, the end dialogue has been simplified and will ask you to either Reboot or Shutdown. Continue Working is no longer viewed as a sensible option. Also, Lite Welcome will no longer be displayed after a Reboot. Just look at Lite Widget to see if you upgraded successfully to 5.2 or do:

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/llver
in a Terminal, should return Linux Lite 5.2. Lastly, the upgrade log will now be stored in /var/log/lite-upgrade.log for those interested in the process. All of our code will function in the 'system space' and no longer in the 'user space'. Our overall improvements to Lite Upgrade should see people upgrading as quickly as ever with less bloat along with unnecessary dialogues and information.

> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates (you must reboot if asked to, otherwise continue to the next step)
> Set a Restore Point - Menu, System, Timeshift
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
> Reboot

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall lite-upgrade-series5
or:

Code: [Select]
rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/lite-upgrade.desktop
then try Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade again.

Having problems upgrading? First thing to do is open a terminal, and make sure you have the latest version of Lite Upgrade.

Code: [Select]
apt policy lite-upgrade-series5
should return:

Code: [Select]
  Installed: 5.0-0020-linuxlite
  Candidate: 5.0-0020-linuxlite

If you've ran Install Updates and still don't have this version or greater you can either - wait 24 hours, or change to the default Linux Lite repository in Lite Sources.

Lite Upgrade - What it will do:

- New Lite Help Manual
- New Lite Upgrade
- New Lite Welcome
- New Lite Themes
- New Lite Tweaks
- New Lite Sources
- New Lite Software
- New Lite Firewall Config
- New Lite Widget
- New Wallpapers
- Add new Screensavers
- Add huge new Printer support
- New Grub image (for dual booting etc)

Lite Upgrade - What it won't do:

- Remove Adobe Flash (people may still be playing their favorite games, we won't be forcing change on folks)
- Add LibreOffice Spellcheck
- Remove GTK2 engines

Manual removal of Adobe Flash:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-installer
Then perhaps use a apt-mark hold to stop it reinstalling:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold flashplugin-installer
For any help on removing/adding any of the above, please place a Post.

There is no upgrade path to or from RC releases.
There is no upgrade path from Series 2, 3 or 4 ( 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 | 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 | 4.0, 4.2, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 ) to Series 5.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-5.2-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

Reviewers in a VirtualBox:

Installing Updates does not function with a Live ISO. All features work as they should, once you have installed Linux Lite to hardware or a VM.
Once Linux Lite has been installed, add the following for a complete reviewing experience:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-guest-x11
Don't forget the Guest Additions too!
Also, get the Extensions pack from here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads)

A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) or https://rufus.ie/ (https://rufus.ie/)
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

Thank you :)

Jerry and the team.

NEW DEVELOPMENT COMPUTER FUNDRAISER

As the title suggests, it is time to buy a new computer. The one I currently have simply is not productive anymore. It doesn't even have USB3 :(
It's an old HP Z800, which was a great workhorse in its day, but these days it is becoming less and less productive as time goes on.

For the new PC, I have deliberately chosen parts that will take me from cruising speed to light speed in terms of compiling code, accessing files, building and testing VM's and multi-tasking, compiling kernels, to mention the main requirements.

Here is what I have picked out, with prices:

171.35 - Cooler Master TD500 Mid Tower Case
343.85 - Asus ROG Strix B550-F Motherboard
825.00 - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core, 24 Thread up to 4.6Ghz CPU
074.75 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU Fan
277.98 - HyperX Fury 32Gb DDR4-3200 Memory
897.98 - Gigabyte Aorus 1Tb NVMe Gen 4 M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD x 2 Read 5000 MB/s Write 4400 MB/s
234.99 - Cooler Master V 750W 80Plus Modular PSU
019.81 - Arctic Silver Thermal Paste
-------------------------------------------
2845.71 - Total NZD or 1896.18 USD
-------------------------------------------

I already have a fairly modern nVidia 1650 GPU so there is no need for one here.

The fundraiser will last one month. Donations can be made here - https://www.linuxliteos.com/donate.html in any manner you choose. Please let me know if you are specifically contributing towards this new pc and I will be sure to make mention of you once the new build is complete.

Thank you everyone for your support, it is very much appreciated.

Jerry :)

Hello! I want to thank you a lot for this job, I love LL and it's working great as always.

I have only one question: when I use the System Information utility it shown Ubuntu as the operating system (I know LL is based on it), but in my desktop computer it shows Linux lite.

Is it normal? Can I change it?

Here's what some codes shows:

Don't alter anything in this file, there's simply no need. Other parts of the OS read this file and will stop functioning if you change this file. We are Ubuntu based.

Is there any way to change Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS here to Linux Lite 5.2?

When does the Lite Upgrade from 5.0 to 5.2 begin?  I keep doing updates but the Lite Upgrade link in the menu has not appeared yet.

Thanks.

Hmm...  I'm on 5.0 and am fully updated, but for some reason am not finding Lite Upgrade anywhere in my menu (visual or search).  Is there a way to upgrade "manually"?

Please follow all of the instructions in the release announcement regarding upgrading. Cheers.

My apologies, in my excitement to upgrade to 5.2 I misunderstood the "If your'e missing Lite Upgrade..." instructions for if it's missing AFTER the upgrade.  D'Oh!

Now that I'm actually paying attention, everything is working as expected.  Thanks for your patience with my impatience!  :-D

Hello again.

So, I have this little problem:

I upgraded LL today from 4.8 to 5.0 (I didn't do directly to 5.2 because I already had my bootable stick with 5.0) in my desktop computer, and now, trying to upgrade to 5.2, Linux lite Upgrade Utility aborts.

Here's what it shows:

https://imgur.com/IP15jvi.png

I have to say that trying to get it I switched the repository mirror and had no effect.

I have stable internet conection.

@zaov
You sure this stick is not the BETA/Test version of LL5.0?
Beta's do not have the option to upgrade.

Also, you will want to Update LL5.0 (Lite Updates) then try to Upgrade to LL5.2 (Lite Upgrade)....

Title: Re: Linux Lite 5.2 Final Released
Post by: zaov on November 11, 2020, 06:34:19 PM
Thank you, @firenice03

I'm sure it's the stable version. I know where I downloaded it and it's also the one I use in my laptop (that I upgraded to 5.2 without problems).

Also, I have already updated LL5.0. Not only using Lite Updates, but with
Code: [Select]
apt update and
Code: [Select]
apt-get update, as well upgraded with
Code: [Select]
apt upgrade and
Code: [Select]
apt-get upgrade.

Maybe you know any other way to try it.

Edit: The problem was solved. The issue here was that the LL repository is down, but Jerry pointed it to one of the mirrors and now everything is good. My machine is now LL5.2.

Hello liunx-liters, I installed 5.0 on old laptop, and want to live upgrade to 5.2, the problem is both "lite upgrade" menu and "sudo apt dist-upgrade" can't upgrade OS to 5.2.
I've tried both GUI and terminal way many times, the "lite upgrade" menu always report "computer not connected to internet", and "sudo apt dist-upgrade" always report " 0 upgraded .. 0 not upgraded."
Is it geolocation (ip and apt package list mirror) problem?
If that's the cause, how to work around to upgrade live to 5.2 instead of using 5.2 installation media?

P.S. I remember I changed software repo to local (China PR), but not the main one which is
deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ emerald main
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list.

I just tried "ping linuxliteos.com", ended up 33.3333% packet loss, and one of taiwan mirror had some packet loss too when pinged last week.
