Post by: Jerry on April 21, 2020, 11:28:50 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 5.0 RC1 is now available for testing. This is the most feature rich, complete Linux Lite release to date. This is the release many people have been waiting for, see below for details.

UEFI is now supported.

Changes:

UEFI is now supported out of the box. It is recommended that you disable Secure Boot even though it will work, it's just a huge hassle to have it enabled. See the new inbuilt Help Manual for ways to do this on the Start page.

Plus dozens of other tweaks and changes, too many to list.

We will go into greater details for each new feature, the why's and what's in the Final release announcement. In lieu of any specific instructions, the new in-built Help Manual will have instructions for all of our new features.

Special mentions:

A huge thank you to @whateverthing for his masterful artwork which without, we would be sorely lacking.

WolfLand over at the Pinguy forums. He has brought forward some time proven software to the 2020's and has been instrumental in providing us with something we can turn into a UEFI and Secure Boot supported product.

Our very generous financial supporters, you know who you are. This has been the most expensive development cycle to date. I have paid out $100's of dollars to developers in the last 2 months alone, mostly at UpWork. The changes to 2 applications alone cost $300USD and required extensive time, work and collaboration.

Window Theme: Adapta
Icon Theme: Papirus
Font: Roboto Regular

I said we would only provide a UEFI build as default, if our hand was forced. Without going into too much detail, you can draw your own conclusions here - https://www.anandtech.com/show/12068/intel-to-remove-bios-support-from-uefi-by-2020 (https://www.anandtech.com/show/12068/intel-to-remove-bios-support-from-uefi-by-2020) Now was the latest we could react. It is what it is...

How do I know if my Windows pc has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/)

Details:

Kernel: 5.4.0-25 (custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.6)
Firefox: 75.0
Thunderbird: 68.7.0
LibreOffice: 6.4.2.2
VLC: 3.0.9
Gimp: 2.10.18
Base: 20.04

Known Issues:

No prompt to eject Media at the end of the Legacy install, prompt is available at the end of the UEFI install.
Release Notes - not working on first installer slide.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Grub - holding shift down whilst booting in UEFI mode does not bring up the Grub menu (works in Legacy mode), waiting for Ubuntu fix.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. After you install Linux Lite, you can change Grub to show 'Linux Lite':

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

29-04-2020: Weird bug now appears after successful OEM install, /etc/apt is removed. Will keep a close eye on it.

You tell me.

There is no upgrade to or from RC releases. RC releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

systemd???

Guess he meant to reply in the systemd post. Looking good LL 5! Will download and try it in a VM as soon as I can and report back any findings; good ones and band ones too. :)

Running iso from hdd using grub and with persistence.
Updated without a problem.

Two minor points so far:
    1) Google chrome supposed to replace chromium but doesn't appear in Lite-Software
    2) Concerning chrome again, in the welcome app, scrolling down to lite software and chromium web browser is mentioned but not google chrome.

Otherwise looks good and fresh :)

I'm sorry, that reply was to a different thread.  How it ended up here I still haven't figured out!  I've tried to delete it, but it only lets me "modify" it.  Please delete it - I have copied-and-pasted it to the appropriate thread in the Off-Topic section.

By the way, I like all the cool tools you have in Linux Lite 5.0!

I use aria2 to download stuff and when downloading LL 5.0rc got this message:
Code: [Select]
[WARN] aria2c had to connect to the other side using an unknown TLS protocol. The integrity and confidentiality of the connection might be compromised.Peer: plug-mirror.rcac.purdue.edu (128.211.151.254:443) Going here plug-mirror.rcac.purdue.edu (http://plug-mirror.rcac.purdue.edu) in chromium takes me to some kind of repository, which I guess would be OSDN's

I stopped the download since it looked pretty weird and had never seen that before, so ... is this normal? Is it safe to continue the download? This happens using both methods: HTTPS and Torrent.

EDIT: After having googled for the message I found this post https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/502763/aria2c-had-to-connect-to-the-other-side-using-an-unknown-tls-protocol-why and seems it has something to do with aria2 according to the answer on that post:
Quote
this is just GnuTLS library reporting that it's using TLS 1.3 and aria2c not understanding what "TLS 1.3" is.

So it would seem it is completely safe to continue the download :)

Absolutely wonderful release!

I’ve run it through as much as I could think of for two days and haven’t been able to locate any issues so far. It installed fine alongside Lite 4.8 and Solydx-10, using “Something else” in the installer. Grub found the other systems on the drive and was easy to modify to show Linux Lite, as you noted. Was able to customize the whole system to my preferences in less than an hour.
Happy to still see Clementine in Lite Software, with an updated version. Nice touch with the Lite customization of Neofetch.

I’ll keep testing but don’t know what else I can try that effects the way I use my OS.

I attempted to install this RC on my 32bit UEFI Lenovo 100S which has been problematic with previous versions.

Balena Etcher (v1.5.81 portable on Windows 7) failed to produce a bootable USB stick from the ISO :-(.  Showed "ubuntu" twice in the F12 boot menu but both items booted the existing 4.8 install.  Insult was added to the disappointment by the size of the download...

Rufus (v3.10 portable on Windows 7, default options) produced a USB drive that showed up as something like "USB UEFI Mass Storage" (didn't write down the exact text) in the F12 boot menu, which when selected booted up to the live environment from the USB drive (so the 32bit UEFI worked! Yay!).  Started installation and that went all the way through until a failure to grub-update the internal eMMC drive was reported.  I had selected to manually manage partitions so as not to disturb the existing partitioning arrangement (the ext4 & swap partitions were set for reformatting however reformatting the UEFI System partition was not offered as an option) so this may have contributed to the failure.  After the grub-update failure message a window was displayed indicating that a problem report would be submitted said window was closed, however that window could not be closed.  I didn't have any network connected when this happened but after plugging in a USB to ethernet adapter (TP-Link UE-300 which has worked for previous LL installs) the situation didn't improve (not that I really expected it to).  I rebooted, getting the expected message to remove the installation medium, and arrived at the minimal GRUB prompt.  I won't have time until next weekend to try again (this device at the moment is a test hack not a daily driver, so resolution not urgent).

NB: Rufus detected a version discrepancy with several SysLinux files between what it had available and what was used in the ISO and requested permission to download the matching files - when approved the download proceeded and writing the flash image commenced.

Bonus outcome from this RC: this notebook's keyboard and touchpad both worked with the live environment without any fiddles = a huge advance from 4.x! :)

Incidentally my ISP's routing to OSDN resulted in a download speed averaging only about 100kB/s and it failed to complete several times :( - fortunately Firefox (Win7) was able to resume the download each time and the final ISO passed the hash check.  This is worse than other recent OSDN downloads I've had which averaged 200-250kB/s (still not great, but at least those downloads - of similar size - succeeded).

I'll try this again on my Windows 10, see if I get the same result. Last time was fine.

Rufus isn't officially supported so I'm going to skip over this.

Nice :)

If you are on Windows 10 and on Wi-Fi, there is a problem with some 1903 / 1909 installations related to RSC. Google it if related.
I will not post procedure here but Wi-Fi can slow down / cut. A physical reboot of the computer can resolve this temporarily sometimes.
I did not see the problem on Linux Lite ;)

I'll have to try this out later this week on a couple of my machines at my one man computer repair shop.

Trying to get more and more people hooked on linux.

MSI Laptop - Intel 9300h and Nvidia 1650, or 1660, forget which gpu.
Alienware Laptop - Inte 7300hq and Nvidia 1050ti

And some VM stuffs of course.

Trying to decide what to use at work, KVM, XCP-NG, or VMWare?

Once LL 5.x is released I will be testing and using the OEM install on several newer machines, and setting them up to UEFI dual boot with Windows 10. These are welcome features to me and many users friends/clients that I steer into Linux. I will order a couple of DVDs soon as well and do a few network installs as well. Over time I will write some tutorials on those processes. I'm very excited about the new release.

I've put a lot of hours into the OEM side of things because it can really help us grow. I've written clear tutorials for both company and customer and even hacked the Ubuntu code to fix some of their issues and made it 100% LL branding. You're gonna love it TC.

Burn to USB via dd worked fine. Install alongside 4.8 and Win10 was flawless. I have been using it daily for a week now and the only issue I have found is on the lock screen. The buttons for Switch User and Cancel are whited out. Picture archive attached.

on my Asus "Linux Only" 64bit desktop PC, i looked over my bios settings, i see UEFI, found  secure boot, its enabled, but dont show how to disable it, only shows two choices  "windows or Other" , not going to disable this right now, but might when 5.0 "final" comes out , so the question i have is , do i set it to "other"  ?, as a way to disable it ?.

Heya!

Could it be that the screen brightness goes to almost zero because you are on the battery and/or maybe have a defective charge port ?
Or, the power saving feature is set to a very short delay...

Edit: Clarified wording and remove useless blah blah. Sorry for my english. ;)

I attempted to install this RC on my 32bit UEFI Lenovo 100S which has been problematic with previous versions.
I've done some more testing with this obstreperous device so an update...

Balena Etcher (v1.5.81 portable on Windows 7) failed to produce a bootable USB stick from the ISO :-(.  Showed "ubuntu" twice in the F12 boot menu but both items booted the existing 4.8 install.
Using Rufus' "image copy" (i.e. dd equivalent) mode to flash the ISO produced identical results: same F12 boot menu behaviour as the Etcher flashed USB stick.  I've got a couple of other ideas to test to try and figure out what it isn't liking...

I've gone back and installed from my 32bit UEFI enabled 4.2 image (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/linux-lite-software-development/uefi-build-test/msg44393/#msg44393) using exactly the above process and that worked fine.  The 4.2 image was flashed with Rufus using default options (i.e. MBR partitioned file copy mode) as it was for the original 4.2 install.  I then attempted to install the 5.0RC1 image (also flashed to USB with Rufus' defaults) replicating exactly the same install steps and that fails as reported above.  I can only conclude that there is some difference in the installation process involving the final GRUB installation phase between the 4.2 image and the 5.0RC1 image.

I'm wondering whether it is trying to configure GRUB in Legacy/CSM mode rather than UEFI - i.e. the installer hasn't properly registered that this is a UEFI install - but failing because the drive is GPT partitioned??  The partitioning process seemed to recognise the ESP though and offers to use it, and there was nothing different in the observed behaviour of the 4.2 install vs the 5.0RC1 install that might support that hypothesis :(.

I'll do some more testing as I get the chance to try and figure out why this is going astray, because this failure is right at the last hurdle before rebooting into the installed system - so it's pretty close to being successful...

@WytWun  Maybe I'm missing something, but you are trying to run a 64 bit OS on 32 bit pc.

Linux Lite 5 RC is 64 bit only and I believe Linux Lite 4.x was 64 bit as well.
The last 32 bit version was Linux Lite 3.8

As detailed in the 4.2 UEFI related post I linked, this laptop is 64bit but afflicted with 32bit UEFI firmware (can't call it a BIOS because it isn't - no Legacy/CSM support!).  I had to add 32bit UEFI bootloader support to the 4.2 UEFI ISO and I ran the laptop with 4.x (updated through the series to 4.8 ) for approaching 18 months; the 5.0RC1 ISO includes the 32bit UEFI bootloader but something else is going wrong at the last step in the install :(.

Just did a fresh install on my Alienware 13 R3, Intel 7300HQ, Nvidia 1050ti

Right after you type in your account password and log in it never makes it to the desktop.

The graphics get all strange, then it shuts down.

LL 4.8 worked great.  I have noticed other newer linux flavors doing this too and it all seems to come from the defaulted open source graphics drivers.

Hope this helps.

Ok, the file is called 'patchapt' If it is not in /etc/llapt/patchapt I most likely included it for the final and not the rc.

If it is there, run:

Code: [Select]

else:

exit 0

what is the new "writable" partition on my usb drive? I dont like my veracrypt partitions to be logged!... Oh I found it hitting esc and typing "exit" to grub gives the "old" boot menu where I can hit tab and type in " toram" (yes space included). This will copy LL live entirely in RAM (what I almost always do and have done). This makes it almost instant to check the md5sums (booting) as the needed files are already copied to RAM and don't need to be read from boot media again. What about making it default to copy to ram when there is enough 4gb+ or 8gb+ of RAM. Seems to work fine.

The update notification, not my favorite but fortunately have more options than "always notify and force updates even if configured to not do so and don't care about what programs was open or unsaved data" When I realized that this is really the case with windows I stopped Using it. I no longer need windows or use it even if it is the only OS installed, because I have LL installed to usb drive to override that ((force)update) shit.

Bugs

Cant install virtualbox via lite software or with apt. Audacity installed successfully with apt. I now use gnome-boxes temporarily. audio volume is also a lot harder to control, thanks to limited length pulseaudio. Opening encrypted volumes via gui is broken but manually using cryptsetup commands work.

Luks error (when trying to open volume with gui)

If it means anything for both 4.8 and 5.0rc with the alienware doesn't fully boot with the open source nvidia driver.

For 4.8 it boots every 3 or 4 times.
Switching it to the nvidia driver fixes it without issues.

For 5.0rc it does not at all.

I'd love to be able to include the nvidia drivers on the ISO but that would cause it to bloat in size. What happens when you select to Install 3rd party drivers for graphics and wifi during install? If you're connect to the internet, it should pull those in and install them.

When running from live usb system It is no longer faster to boot directly from flash drive than from RAM and copy LL to ram unless md5sum skipping

https://askubuntu.com/questions/829917/can-i-boot-a-live-usb-fully-to-ram-allowing-me-to-remove-the-disk

Lets say that:
my usb takes 60 seconds to read about 1,5gb (LL install media)
my RAM takes 1 second to read about 1,5gb (LL install media)
my computer boot into the LL loading stage in about 10seconds
my usb takes about 15seconds to read about 350mb (LL essential files to boot up)

Then:
booting normally with LL 4.8 takes about 25seconds (with toram disabled and md5sum disabled)
booting with toram with LL 4.8 takes about 70seconds (with toram enabled and md5sum disabled)
booting normally with LL 5.x takes about 70seconds (with toram enabled and md5sum disabled)
booting with toram with LL 5.x takes about 71seconds (with both toram and md5sum enabled) md5sum checking can be done in ram

However using toram boot parameter with less RAM than needed result in crash while booting (out of RAM)

Yes your fix is working. I also noticed the wrong passphrase is finally "incorrect passphrase" the old was "operation not permitted". For some reason trying with wrong password now takes nearly forever. Not sure if it was taking long previously. However entering correct passphrase in graphical LL5.0RC1 with your fix only takes normal amount of time.

I attempted to install this RC on my 32bit UEFI Lenovo 100S which has been problematic with previous versions.
I've done some more testing with this obstreperous device so an update...
Yet another update...

The failure during the install turns out to be during writing the Grub configuration file to the ESP.  Because Grub can't find a configuration file during boot, but is able to determine the root device and everything else it needs it displays the grub> prompt.

After finding this Grub 2 rescue how-to (https://www.linux.com/training-tutorials/how-rescue-non-booting-grub-2-linux/), I was able to find the information required to use the linux, initrd and boot commands (see the Booting From grub> section of the how-to) to boot the installed OS.  Once booted, I opened a terminal and used sudo update-grub to create the missing Grub configuration file, and the subsequent reboot was completely normal.  In fact I'm posting this from 5.0rc1...

NB: because this machine has an eMMC drive rather than HD or SSD, I had to use /dev/mmcblk1p? rather than /dev/sda? for the root option to the linux command.

Observations:
- the Grub boot menu still says "Ubuntu" instead of "Linux Lite" (did you say this should be fixed for the final Jerry?)
- changing from the light to the dark theme from the welcome system didn't appear to give any feedback that the change had been applied, though when I opened an application it had.
- in the course of resolving this I tried booting a few other EFI capable distros - some could be booted from a dd style USB flash but others would only boot with a Rufus "file copy" flash.  I've not been able to determine what this machine's firmware doesn't like about the dd flashed images that it won't boot though.

I did read that originally. It's extremely hard to accept that one machine cannot recognise any Etcher flashed drive. I'm not saying it's not true, understand that. It should not be showing up as 'ubuntu' in your boot-from-device menu, I also have an entry called 'ubuntu' but I select the actual name of the USB drive to boot from it ie. 'External USB Hard Drive'. That works no problem.

The 100S F12 boot menu with no USB drive present or with a USB drive that is not recognised as UEFI bootable (there's a single Linux Lite installation on this machine, nothing else - don't know why "ubuntu" is appearing twice):

The 100S F12 boot menu with a UEFI bootable USB drive present:

I checked a few 64 bit Linux distro ISO's from my collection to see whether Etcher could create USB installers for them bootable on this machine - sadly only a few have 32bit UEFI support :(.

The ones that would boot from Etcher flashed USB sticks:
- Mageia 7.1 Live XFce x86_64
- MX 19.1 x64
- a Linuxium Intel Atom specific re-spin of Ubuntu 20.04
- Rescatux 0.73

The ones that weren't recognised (in addition to Lite 5.0rc1):
- Clonezilla Live 2.6.6-15 amd64
- GParted 1.1.0-1 amd64

Clonezilla and GParted both boot when flashed with Rufus in "file copy" mode, same as Lite 5.0rc1.

The 100S has Insyde H2O(tm) UEFI firmware.  There are later firmware packages available than it's running which might improve the behaviour, but the available packages seem to be only installable from Windows :( which isn't something I'd consider re-installing at this point.  If I find a way to update the firmware from Linux I might attempt it but at the moment I'm not bothered as I can deal with the issues I've encountered.

BTW: While it would be great if the issues I've reported were fixed - if you can work out solutions - my posts about the installation headaches with this machine have been to document them and any solutions or workarounds I've found for the benefit of others who might encounter similar problems.  These sorts of issues will hopefully be pretty uncommon except for similar machines.

First time accessed: appeared to start and display fonts then window disappeared (presume a crash)
Subsequently: appeared to start and work as normally I would expect a fonts utility to work

Aside: noticed some apparent duplicate fonts (e.g. Cambria, Comic Sans) - has rationalisation been considered?

@WytWun thanks for the report. As for 'duplicates' if it were a problem in eg. LibreOffice Word, I'd address it. One of each is displayed in Office. Like software, there are different revisions of fonts, one could be from 2016, the other from 2019. I'll go through them on a rainy day and remove the older ones, at the moment a few 100kb with not have an adverse affect on the system, as such it's not a priority. That's the current rationalisation.

Yes, but ZFS is for servers. You won't need it on a home pc.

Does the installer support it or do I have to install it after? I'd like to get root on ZFS too (this is what I had to do for 18.04 which is a lot of manual steps: https://openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/Getting%20Started/Ubuntu/Ubuntu%2018.04%20Root%20on%20ZFS.html)

I find it very useful on a laptop to take snapshots (plus Ubuntu now can take snapshots before installing packages for easy rollback, via zsys: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/03/ubuntu-20-04s-zsys-adds-zfs-snapshots-to-package-management/)
It is also useful to send laptop *incremental* backups (snapshots) to a ZFS server (using zfs send|receive).
True these are advanced features but they are very useful if familiar with ZFS (I've been using it for over 6 yrs).

Before you know it... :)    I'm guessing its still slated for June 1... Haven't seen on here where it would be delayed - I'd guess we'd know here 1st if it was....

My advice is to get this RC and see if it does what you expect it to. Then report back to me with the results. But you'll have to be quick, we release in 2 days :)

ROADMAP

Linux Lite 5.0 Release - 1st June 2020 (TO BE CONFIRMED)
