Title: Linux Lite 4.2 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on October 31, 2018, 05:39:31 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 4.2 Final is now available for download and installation.

This release has a number of minor changes. Think of it as 'refinement' and not a 'major upgrade'. There are some new wallpapers thanks to @whateverthing (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/profile/?u=5059) and some minor tweaks here and there.

Lite Software - Redshift

Redshift has been added to Lite Software. Redshift adjusts the color temperature according to the position of the sun. A different color temperature is set during night and daytime. During twilight and early morning, the color temperature transitions smoothly from night to daytime temperature to allow your eyes to slowly adapt. At night the color temperature should be set to match the lamps in your room. This is typically a low temperature at around 3000K-4000K (default is 3700K). During the day, the color temperature should match the light from outside, typically around 5500K-6500K (default is 5500K). The light has a higher temperature on an overcast day.

I did extensive testing pre-release, with no issues in the end.
Plus, I just tested on a laptop I have here with updates that were 46 days old! As you can see from the pictures, no problems upgrading. People on social media sites reporting smooth upgrading too.

Just checked again for updates and updates were available.

One of the updates mentioned Linux Lite 4 series.

Updated, rebooted and then upgraded to Linux Lite 4.2.

A flawless upgrade.

This update was not available an hour ago....Just a question of waiting.

All I can think of is some folks aren't using the default Linux Lite repository, and are using their local one. Some may have to wait for their local to catch up.

Did a fresh install of LL4.2 from a DVD with the ISO on it. Used the 'install release' from the boot screen. No errors after install. Ran updates. Selected software mirror. Checked my repository selection in Synaptic. All's good. The Beta was really good & the RC is the smoothest install of LL yet.

No problems to report here.
I clicked update this morning and noticed it was downloading a new version of the manual, that's when I remembered "today's the day".
Afterwards, I clicked on Lite Upgrade and in no time I was seeing the reboot prompt, I rebooted and -oh my gosh!!, everything looks the same! (which is great news because I didn't want to lose my customizations 8) [size=78%]).[/size]
[/size]
I confirmed I was running 4.2, and then rebooted and timed my boot time. It was exactly the same 15 seconds from cold boot, so I'm happy as a tornado on a trailer park  ;D

Sorry, 5 minutes later and I already have a question:

When I run  systemctl list-unit-files | grep enabled, I see some weird instances running:

network-manager.service                     enabled
networkd-dispatcher.service                enabled
networking.service                                enabled
NetworkManager-dispatcher.service   enabled
NetworkManager.service                       enabled

So  network-manager.service  is different from  NetworkManager.service ??
I know they are, but why would someone need BOTH running?

And how about  networkd-dispatcher.service  and  NetworkManager-dispatcher.service ??
I know there's a small "d" letter there as well as the small caps/large caps, but why are both to be running?

I'm guessing one of the instances might be superseding the other or something like that??

I finally got time to install LL 4.0 at the weekend, and now upgraded to 4.2, which went smoothly! Thanks!

It's a superb OS, and my only complaint is I'm enjoying using it too much, can't get much else done.

I'd love to see people's reactions to a new laptop with this as the ready-installed OS.

You could quite easy Google each service to see what it does. You probably see the word network a lot and attribute that to repetition. Suffice to say each service is unique and necessary. Cheers.

Just when I thought Linux could not get much better, the Linux Lite team pulls out 4.2.
Thank you for all the people who work hard with Linux Lite. You make a difference!

@Jerry, I have 21 partitions and 2 RAID1 volumes. My /etc is highly customized,
my /lib/systemd/system is very customized. This box runs kernel 4.19 with
Linux Lite 4.0

Is it safe to upgrade to LL 4.2 with this kind of configuration?

----

Sorry, I think the answer is that people who mess up their own LL systems like me, have to live with the results :)

Just done my first clean install of 4.2.

A very smooth install.....Nice.

Gz bro! Same here, just finished installation and made the updates. No problems at all, as usual with LL.

I have one issue though, which is not related to Linux Lite but the Linux wireless subsystem.
If you are not from the United States of America, please check what the command "iw reg get" says.
For me it always says either:
Code: [Select]
country 00 or
Code: [Select]
country US which are wrong, since I'm in Europe and
some of you are from other regions. Country 00 is always wrong.

One might think this is not an issue since the wireless network works fine. However, if we are accurate, it is a
legal issue, since every country has it's own legal radio frequencies which are available for civilians.
As I said, this is not an issue with Linux Lite, it is an issue with the Linux kernel, or better yet - the lack of it at
the moment.

I am not going into the details of this thing, since it is very simple to fix. You only need to know the abbreviation
of your country: For example, if you live in France, the abbreviation is 'FR'. It is usually just two letters.
So, assuming that you live in France, you would do the following to fix the regulatory domain:

Code: [Select]
sudo iw reg set FR
And you may then verify that the radio frequencies are correct for domain 'France' by commanding:

Code: [Select]
iw reg get
which should now begin with FR instead of '00' or 'US'

If I may help, please ask in this topic since I seem to be blocked in other areas here

Cheers!

I still cannot update LL. It insists that I am up to date with version 3.8. I am using v 4.0 which I installed from the final version, not the beta one. I was getting some replies about this, but they have now disappeared. Although I have used computers for many years, and Linux exclusively since 1999, I still find this forum the most difficult one to use that I have ever seen. I have tried everything that I can think of, but to no avail. I think now that I have two options. I can stay with version 4.0 until version 5.0 arrives. Or I can look elsewhere for a different distro. I don't want to go for the latter since I think that LL is the best distro that I have ever used. Please, can anyone come up with any suggestions? By the way, I am stuck with lite-upgrade-series3 and I do not know how to install series 4.

Replying to my own post. I have tried running head /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxlite.list. The result I get is deb http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/ citrine main

I am wondering if citrine is wrong and should be diamond. Is that correct?

I only just yesterday installed LL4.2 on my main machine - this was a fresh install as I was on 3.8 before. Jerry, it is AWESOME!!  ;D 8) Runs so smoothly, and was easy to install.

One thing that helped a lot with the install was being able to keep an existing partition where I store some of my files thanks to @firenice03 in this post: https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-linux-lite/is-it-possible-to-install-ll-keeping-an-existing-partition-(an-ext4)/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-linux-lite/is-it-possible-to-install-ll-keeping-an-existing-partition-(an-ext4)/) . I was able to copy back those files into my fresh "Documents" directory in the new LL much faster than I would have from external hard drive. (Don't worry, I had still backed everything up on external hard drive just to be safe!  ;) ) Anyhow I can see that this approach will help me immensely any time I do a fresh install.

I love all the customization options through the settings. Thanks for another great version of a great distro, Jerry. Donation sent. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the update Jerry.

But I do however suffer from the problem of not being able to update through "Lite Upgrade". It always say that I'm already on the latest release but I do know that I'm on LL 4.0.

using "apt policy lite-upgrade-series4" fetch me this:
Quote
lite-upgrade-series4:
  Installed: 4.0-0010-linuxlite
  Candidate: 4.0-0020-linuxlite
  Version table:
     4.0-0020-linuxlite 500
        500 http://linuxlite.3load.com diamond/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://linuxlite.3load.com diamond/main i386 Packages
 *** 4.0-0010-linuxlite 100
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Trying to change my resources in "Lite Resources" will just end up always as "Lite Sources was unable to update the cache.
This may just be a temporary connectivity issues with the update server." And I've already tried switching to every available server listed and the issue kept persisting.

Can I perhaps upgrade through usb-stick? If I use Etcher to install to the stick and install the upgrade from there, can it be done? Sorry for my inexperience behaviour. Just recently trying out Linux since my old laptop can't survive with Windows anymore and I've been loving every aspect of the OS. Fits me perfectly fine on daily basis.  :)

Hi

This looks great and I wanted to try using it via a live USB before upgrading.  Unfortunately I'm presented with a login prompt.  What are the default credentials for this?

Thanks

The following is taken from this very announcement:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required.  If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)
