Title: Linux Lite 4.2 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on September 24, 2018, 09:18:51 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 4.2 Beta is now available for testing.

This release has a number of minor changes. Think of it as 'refinement' and not a 'major upgrade'. There are some new wallpapers thanks to @whateverthing (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/profile/?u=5059) and some minor tweaks here and there.

Lite Welcome

Minor changes.

Help Manual

The Help Manual will be updated for 4.2 in the Final.

Details:

Kernel: 4.15.0-34.37 (custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 4.18)

Thunderbird: 52.9.1
LibreOffice: 6.0.6.2
VLC: 3.0.3
Gimp: 2.10.6
Base: 18.04.1

Known Issues:

Is the slow boot fixed on some computers? That has yet to be tested. I have done some 'under the hood' work on this, but of course, we need testing on real hardware on an array of different computer configs to know for sure.

There is no upgrade to or from Beta releases. Beta releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Answering questions the same way as Jocklad:
Linux Lite 4.2 Beta x64 clean install

Linux Lite 4.2 beta ISO downloaded and installed to live USB via Rufus on Windows 10

System installed to WD 80gb internal HDD on Lenovo SFF M58p 3.0MHz, 4gb RAM

Install Time to HDD 8 Minutes.

Updating: Updates downloaded and installed......No Errors.

Session & Startup: Declicked Lite Welcome, Widget, Login Sound, Print Que, vboxclient, but also removed
vbox all together in terminal. Not needed.

Cold Boot Time ....55 seconds (this is after removing vbox) LL series 3 booted quicker

Install Drivers: No Additional Drivers available.

Language Support Installed.....Default was EN.....No change required.

Keyboard: Default was English....No change required.

Synaptic: Default Server changed from U.S. to Canada (note: A 'choose best' it wanted to choose a
server in Italy. Don't think so! Forced a selection from Canada

Lite Sources: Set to U.S. East Coast

Firewall: Enabled by Default....No action required.

First impression: System & actions seem sluggish. Have just installed the Beta, so please put away pitchforks & torches. Only a first impression. Lets give this a few days.

I retract my statement about the LL 4.2 beta being a bit sluggish. Using it for a while & it's working fine. I think my problem was a sluggish internet connection, not Linux Lite. I apologize for any incorrect reflection.

Throwing ideas here...

Installed myself and seems fine but... could it be the same problem as installing Wine dev (or other) and having to put/recreate icons manually or a problem with distro (pointing to Xnial in install script).

Cheers!

You might have to reword that, as I don't understand what you are saying. Wine from Lite Software installs Menu icons if that means anything.

@Jerry
Yeah... sorry about that, I meant when you use the PPA and install the devel version of Wine!
BTW I tried to install on a old DELL PowerEdge2900 server... couldnt install ;) Pretty sure it's because of the crappy graphics card because Linux Lite 2.8 installed fine... and really fast, hehe!

Been testing with two system installs the past week. One in virtualbox, haven’t found any issues. Looks and performs well.

The second is a hardware install on my HP G60 laptop.  Running a Pentium T4200 with 3GB RAM and a Hybrid HDD. After removing virtualbox files I’m seeing boot times in the 27-31 seconds range. Better than I saw with 4.0.Tried the newer 4.18 kernel but there isn't a noticeable difference in boot time.

The refinements give 4.2 a more pleasing feel overall. Looking great Jerry! I'll run the beta until the 1 Nov release and let you know if I run across anything of note.

:(  Is the release coming out on Nov.1st??
:'(  I didn't even have the time to try this beta  :-[
No doubt about it: As you get older, time seems to accelerate  :'(
