Title: Linux Lite 4.0 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on May 31, 2018, 11:54:23 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 4.0 Final is now available for download.

This release marks the beginning of Series 4.x Codename Diamond.

The main changes in Linux Lite Series 4.x include a new icon and system theme, Timeshift for system backups, Shotwell to manage and perform basic edits on images, MenuLibre to manage menu entries, new Lite applications including Lite Desktop that manages common icons on the Desktop, Lite Sounds to manage system wide sounds, and many of our existing applications have been updated.

See below for all the changes:

- Minimum recommended specs have been raised slightly to more realistic levels (RAM, CPU).
- There are no more 32bit ISO releases. If you still require a 32bit OS due to hardware limitations, Series 3.x is supported through to April 2021.
- XFCE Pulseaudio plugin, has been added to the system tray for highly customizable options regarding volume management.
- Full disk encryption now replaces home encryption in the installer (an Ubuntu implementation).
- The new boot splash also shows you the password field in GUI for encrypted partitions.
- Ubuntu no longer offers an opportunity to set a swap partition. A swap file is now automatically created for you which is a maximum of 2gb or 5% of free disk space (an Ubuntu implementation).
- Compositing is now enabled out-of-the-box.

New Theme (Adapta) and Icon (Papirus) sets.

Faenza icons were dropped as it had not been maintained in some time (albeit there is a fork) and the same for the Arc theme, development seems to have stalled there. Most of our approach to theming in Series 4.x follows the popular Flat design focus. We also now use the Openzone mouse theme.

Language Support - Is improved in this Series. You should get most Menu items in your native language if that is what you chose during the install. Menu items that are not in your native language were either modified by us to give a clearer description, or are Linux Lite applications (slated for translation Series 5.x). You still may need to configure your keyboard post-install. Feedback on this improvement is welcome. I think we've reached a good balance by keeping our legendary fast install process, and offering language support ootb post-install.

Lite Desktop

Lite Desktop is a convenient way for you to get to frequently accessed locations on your computer.

Note - This is currently only supported in US English. As a workaround if you are using anything else other than US English, once you have updated the the system to full language support, rebooted, and in this example we'll use French, copy all the icons from /home/youruser/Desktop to /home/youruser/Bureau. You can then delete the icons you don't want to see (right click delete).

Help Manual

Has been majorly updated. All content and images have been updated. This was a massive undertaking (nearly 3 weeks of continuous full time work), so please take advantage of our easy to follow guide.

Lite Sounds

For the first time in Linux Lite we now have working system sounds. Head to Menu, Settings, Lite Sounds and configure sounds the way you want. By default, the start up and log out sounds are enabled by default, the rest of the system sounds are disabled by default. To enable system wide sounds, simply click on the Enable System Sounds button at the top. There is still some work to do here, but this is a great start.

Timeshift

Timeshift replaces Systemback for system backups. If you intent to use Timeshift you should have at least a 125gb HDD/SSD or larger storage device to accommodate up to 5 snapshots. Systemback is not supported in the 18.04 base. An external storage device is highly recommended, but not essential. In lieu of an external storage device, a separate partition at least 125gb plus is recommended so you need to think carefully how you will partition during Series 4.x installations.

Linux Lite branded applications

Are now easy to find under Menu, Settings and under System in the Settings Manager. They are distinguishable by their unique design and black background. A huge thank you to @whateverthing for his designs here. He also responsible for creating our new Lite feather logo and Diamond (and Final) wallpapers for this release.

New Terminals

We've replaced LXTerminal with XFCE Terminal thanks to your feedback. We've added Powerline to the prompt, and put in some basic system information at the top of the terminal for both the user and Administrator modes.

MenuLibre

Menu management has been improved with the introduction of MenuLibre. Now, when sub-menu applications appear not to be in alphabetical order, resorting is just a click of a button in our heavily customized XFCE menu. You can find it in Menu, Settings, Menu Editor. To sort a sub menu, expand the sub menu tree, click on the first application then click on the sort button (see image below).

In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

Yumi, Multiboot and other multi-boot applications are not supported. A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://etcher.io/ (https://etcher.io/)
If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Addendum

GTK vs GTK3 - We're well aware that the appearance of Calculator, Font Viewer, PDF Viewer and File Search differs from other apps (albeit a minor cosmetic difference) and are unlikely to be noticed by our target Windows audience. Ease of use was the deciding factor in the choice of each of these applications and that overrides any cosmetic considerations, and always will given our target audience.

HiDPI - The 'I bought a 4k Monitor but still want to view things on my screen at double the DPI' rant.
This amuses me more that any other topic in the free software world. Why on Earth would you spend good money on a 4k screen, only to double size everything...why! It makes no sense at all. Yet some are marketing this as a convenience and or 'special feature'.
Does Linux Lite support HiDPI? The answer is, it always has to a certain extent. No special button, no magic pixie dust, just good old Settings Appearance, Fonts, DPI. If you're going to buy a 4k monitor please be sensible, think about it first. Hail XFCE.

Known Issues:

If you are using a language other than English, the Menu shortcuts for My Computer will not work.

Performance Tips:

- For start up (boot time) - if you have no plans to run VirtualBox, and you want faster boots, you can remove it's supported additions:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge virtualbox*
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd-service.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd-service.service

Menu, Settings, Session and Startup, Application Autostart. Untick vboxclient.

VirtualBox support is included and has always been because this is how many people review an OS before they install it. Having the right support - clipboard, drag & drop, network, graphics etc gives a significantly better impression of an OS's function.

- Setting a static IP address (see the Help Manual) will improve boot times, it's something I've always used myself. Instead of waiting for your router to assign you an IP, the OS already has it set. One less thing for the start up procedure to spend time probing for.

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

In summary, what is Linux Lite Series 4.x?

Up and running in virtualbox and I'm really enjoying it. It's impressively polished for an initial release of a new series. Thanks to all those involved with development.

sudo apt purge virtualbox*
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd-service.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd-service.service

This has effectively halved the LL 4.0 boot-time on my PC. Essential tip when running on bare metal!!! :)

Thank you very much to the LL team.
I've tested LL 4.0 on USB live session for about 40min.
Using Resource Manager I noticed it uses 590mb ram while idle, is it because of live session?
Also used Firefox to watch some music videos on youtube, this uses almost 1,8gb ram.
My current LL (32bits) uses 190mb ram while idle and about 800mb ram using FF with some tabs open.

Why such a big increase in ram usage?
I only have 2 gb.
Will my laptop run slower using LL4.0?
Thanks

JesusLinux.   64 bit linux I believe is slightly more memory demanding than the 32 bit version, that was my impression on series 3.   For version 3.8,  I upgraded my Laptop to 3 GB  (Maximum the Bios would take)  to give some extra capacity when changing from 32 bit to 64 bit,   and all runs smoothly  ( Fuji Si1520).  Hope this helps.  About to change to LL4.0 on that machine.

Thanks

LL4.0 installed via DVD.  From loading DVD into Fuji Si1520 to completion of fresh whole drive install - Lan connected circa 30 mins .  Loaded further updates.   Lite tweaked number lock.
Appears to be running smoothly so far.   Thanks to J & the team yet again.    LL user Database updated.
UPDATE _Lite Tweaks - Could not get ZRam, Preload apps and TLP to load ( separately)  Error message came up

FURTHER UPDATE:   This morning switched on Fuji Si1520  and ran Lite tweaks. Zram Preload apps and TLP   All loaded successfully.   Putting previous down to something interfering last night.  Everything running smoothly.

The error message is self-explantory. Either it's the USB - yes new products do fail, the ISO or the burning software.

Just tested - ZRam, Preload work perfect here, no issues. Try one at a time. TLP - I'll have to try later on a laptop.

After a clean install of LL 4.0 Final on a Dell Inspiron 1501 still having the same issues as detailed in this thread

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/suggestions-and-feedback/possible-kernel-problems-with-ubuntu-18-04-and-latest-kernel/

The laptop goes thru the motions for a rebootshutdown but after stopping services and unmounting hdd it won't poweroff.

I've installed ukuu (Ubuntu Kernel Update Utility) and managed to find an older kernel v4.6.2 which actually works. I will keep testing kernels and update on the original thread to avoid hijacking this one.

Otherwise, there's only one "annoyance" I've seen so far, when doing updates, after downloading the list of updates and clicking to install, there is no progress bar for the actual download/install and the only way I knew the process was finished was when the hdd indicator light on the laptop stopped flickering.

Anyway great distro :)

The errno5 error is solved. I used dd command to create the usb drive but that gave the error. Used etcher and all ok.
However i do get error messages during boot. They are
error: no suitable video mode found.
error: no video mode activated.
error: no video mode activated.

Also the bootup time is 3 times as long as with 3.8 took 1,5 minute to boot
Update: Boot time is ok now, i removed the virtualbox support additions. Now only have problem with the trim on ssd. After last step of enabling trim i get this message: mv: cannot stat '/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim': No such file or directory
Also after reboot there isnt a trimlog.

I tried LL 4.0 again, now i installed it next to LL 3.8, booted fine the first time. Then i ran update, enabled trim and did the purge virtualbox.
Then i rebooted the laptop and couldnt get it to boot into LL4.0 anymore, left it for almost an hour but it just refused to boot. LL 3.8 boots fine.
So i just removed LL 4.0 completely and now back to running LL 3.8 as the main OS on laptop.

So guess LL 4.0 isnt for me. Will have to do with 3.8 as long as it is supported.

Hi Guys

First post here, congrats with the new release.

I've installed LL4, by using the previous home folder of my LL3.6. Obviously it has my old settings, which also means the old desktop look. How do i use the new icons/theme, what folder/files do i need to delete?

Thanks

Hi, we don't recommend that approach at all due to our highly modified system.

Noted...but i have been doing it like that since series 2, and never had any (big) problems. Before I needed to delete a folder keeping the old theming settings, but can't remember which one. Can you just point me into a direction, please? I'll try and figure it out myself from there.

You need to open a Support thread in the appropriate section or it makes it very difficult for people to find your content if they are having a similar problem. Then your issues will get addressed one at a time.

Kept getting system freezes so i completely removed LL 4.0 and will stay with LL 3.8 from now on. No LL 4.0 for me. Doesnt work on my laptop, tried to get it working for 2 days.

You need to open a Support thread in the appropriate section or it makes it very difficult for people to find your content if they are having a similar problem. Then your issues will get addressed one at a time.

I will stay on 3.8. That works on my laptop without any problems.

"Don't worry, be happy!" (c)  ;)

Install Papirus Icon Theme from here (https://github.com/PapirusDevelopmentTeam/papirus-icon-theme).

Install TimeShift from here (https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift).

What else? Walls! Download Diamond wallpapers from here (https://imgur.com/a/Iy90oZt).

As for Lite Sounds, I don't know how to add them in 3.8. But they are not that important for you, I think.

That's it! Now your LL 3.8 is very much like Diamond LL 4.0. And even better, because you have systemback while Diamond-users don't! 8)

Enjoy!  :D

Why not try check the drive for errors first? Look if there is such a test on the boot menu, 'cos I don't remember its options.

It's working. No problems installing an updating.
Since I was running LL3.2 (32bits) and I wanted to move to 64bits distro since the CPU supports 64bits, it came down to:
-LL 4.0
-Linuxmint 18.3
-Manjaro
All Xfce DE
I made 3 USB sticks using the dd command to test them Live on the same laptop.
LL 4.0 is the slowest to boot live and consumes more RAM than the other 2.
Linuxmint worked great but I read in the forum that Linuxmint 19.0 is coming out in the next months, so I was afraid I had to fresh install again.
Then Manjaro with the best boot screen where you can configure keyboard layout (for exemple), runs as well as Linuxmint.

After the live tests I made I decided to fresh install LL 4.0 since I'm signed in in the forum and for being familiar (xfce DE is all the same give or take) and so.
I have nothing important in this laptop so I didn't backup.
LL 4.0 gave me the error descrided above and left my old laptop with no OS.
So I turned to Manjaro and it lives again.
I intend to dual boot in the near future with either LL4.0 when the problems get fixed or Linuxmint 19 when it comes out.

It's this kind of experiences that either make you stick with a distro or move to other.

It is known that Ubuntu 18.04 has errors, therefore LL will also have them, despite the effort of the LL team so that LL is as stable as possible. At the moment I advise to stay in LL 3.8 that works very well or why not, migrate to Debian. MX Linux is a stable and very good distro, another that I tested recently and I was surprised is Emmabuntus, based on Debian 9.4, simply stable and with many applications. So, friends, do not get complicated and use other alternatives that work very well and give Ubuntu 18.04 time to improve and solve their problems.  ;)

Thanks Jerry for a wonderful distro, love the new modern look, plus the Shotwell that comes bundled with it. That is so cool! I installed 4.0 on my laptop and have been familiarizing myself with the new version. The installation process worked fine, although in the earliest part of it there were messages saying that IRQ client was not available (or something along those lines). It still installed just fine though. While shutting down immediately after 4.0 install (in order to re-start the system under the fresh 4.0), I got a rather long and scary-looking list of errors, most of them said SQUASHFS error and print_req_error. I waited but nothing more seemed to be progressing, so I force-shut-down the machine using the on-off button on the laptop. I had no problems starting it back up after that, it booted straight into the newly-installed LL 4.0 without any complaints.

In case you are wondering, before installing, I had checked the downloaded iso using md5sum, and it matched that given on the download page. I burned the image using the dd command.

I loved the new default icon set that came bundled (Papirus), although I installed the Yosa icon set after install, it's a similarly modern design but I personally liked the Yosa set - its very similar and still flat but not quite as totally flat, if that helps describe it. Certainly I like the new Papirus icon set in LL 4.0 better than previous icons. I'm so ridiculously picky about icons, I swear I spent longer messing around with icons than with everything else combined for the new install!

I also removed virtualbox as described in the release announcements. This significantly cut the otherwise-long bootup time down to a brief 53 seconds from pressing the on button to getting the login screen.  8)  ;D (There is a negligible amount of additional time from entering password in login screen to arriving at desktop that I didn't count). Considering how how my laptop only has 2G of RAM and is about 5 years old, getting it down to 53 seconds was impressive, thanks Jerry. I feel like that is much faster than what it was on 3.8, although I didn't actually time it on 3.8.

After customizing my desktop settings and my browser preferences, I also added two family members as users, basing their settings on mine by copying my settings into their directories. I then invited the family members to customize their own settings manually via the GUI as desired (they both changed their background wallpaper - thanks for the great wallpapers to pick from). Done and done!

Donation sent.  Thanks for a great distro!

Right now it's just the laptop on 4.0; my main machine that I use for most of what I do (the one in my profile specs) is still on 3.8. This is because it's currently a very busy time of year for me, and besides the install I know I will be needing extra time to install additional Linux software on my main machine for the types of things I do, so I will probably just stick to 3.8 for now. I have a loose plan to install new LL on that machine when 4.2 comes out, which fortunately would come at not quite such a hectic time. Unless of course the temptation to install 4.0 before that becomes too great, which it may....!

Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge virtualbox*
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd-service.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd-service.service

This has effectively halved the LL 4.0 boot-time on my PC. Essential tip when running on bare metal!!! :)
Glad you made use of it :)

Firstly, thanks for LL4 (looking good) and for the above note. To add some figures, using a wiped 500MB HD with 2GB Ram and a Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4GHz I made fresh installs of LL3.8 and LL4.0, each in half of the HD. Boot figures from Grub to log-in prompt were:

    For LL3.8 - 19 seconds
For LL4.0 = 62 seconds with no tweaks
For LL4.0 - 28 seconds after following the above.

For "selling" Linux to new users first impressions count. While getting back to 19 seconds would be nice I think over a minute is too long. I think that having a "Speed up startup" entry in Welcome would be a very good thing. And/or a start up option. I'm guessing but I think that most users seeking to preserve old hardware (such as the ex-Vista machine I used) will not be using vbox.

Hi All
I stumbled across this the other day via a youtube post from Joe Collins (an avid Linux user). Later that night i downloaded it on to my laptop and have it running via virtual box with out any issues and its great - i really like the look and features

I have then bought 2x Intel Nucs for a Job where Linux Lite would be great for these in the warehouse - scaled down and easy to use

However although using SSD they are taking close to 1min to boot and there is an error along the lines of 'video card not activated'
So i suspect this is the reason for the long boot time
This also happened after a re-install of the OS unfortunately i have had to revert to another Linux OS

Is this an issue others have had. can you help me rectify the issue?

Regards

To fix the video card not activated message I have made changes to /etc/default/grub

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

Changed the above to
# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
GRUB_TERMINAL=console
Updated grub after saving changes and closing the file

For the long boot. Did you do the following?

sudo apt purge virtualbox*
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl stop vboxadd-service.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd.service
sudo systemctl disable vboxadd-service.service

Then go to Menu, Settings, Session and Startup, Application Autostart. Untick vboxclient.
Reboot and see what the boot time is now.

So Linux "lite" has now gone the way of so many of the other Linux distros, copying Microsoft with ever-increasing bloat. 32 bit platforms are now excluded and the resource requirements are now increasing. So all older platforms should go to landfill so far as Linux Lite are concerned and with each bloat Linux lite runs slower and slower unless users buy a new gamers' platform. Not a good thing I fear also for energy useage.

I suggest that to continue now with the name "Linux Lite" will be a delusion. It is no longer light or lite. Perhaps the name should now be changed to Linux Waslite with release 4.0 and onwards?
Title: Re: Linux Lite 4.0 Final Released
Post by: Vera on June 27, 2018, 10:32:24 AM
@drrdf - I understand that you miss the 32-bit version. At the same time, let's remember that Jerry is doing this (i.e. developing a Linux distro) himself on a volunteer basis. Maybe we could all be grateful for how long we had 32-bit, instead of upset that it's no longer being available.

I am sure it was similarly hard for Jerry to say goodbye to 32-bit too, but let's think about how much of his time he is using up. If he would be making 2 versions of each release (one for 64 bit and one for 32 bit) then it would take so much more of his time than just one version. Since there are more and more 64 bit computers around and less and less 32 bit, it makes sense that he'd focus on just the 64 bit version. Anyone else who was working on something on a volunteer basis would probably make a similar decision, just because of how much time they're using up.

If you personally need a 32 bit version, one possible solution is that you could consider putting in the time and effort to learning how to install one of the distros that specialize in multiple architectures and who therefore support 32 bit. For example as far as I can tell from my research, Gentoo is a possibility (see this thread on the Gentoo forums https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1073184-start-0.html (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1073184-start-0.html)). If you feel like this is too much time and effort for you to do, then by the same token it would be rather unfair to expect Jerry to put in the time and effort to develop an entire extra version that many people are not using.

I'm not saying you should be forced to throw out your 32 bit computer if you still like it and if you have environmental concerns about getting a new computer (although if you ARE looking for a reason to get a new machine this is a good time! - most software is only being developed for 64 bit now).  I'm saying instead of having no option but to get a new computer, it might be more up to you to step up and do something about getting Linux for your 32 bit machine, not up to Jerry.

So Linux "lite" has now gone the way of so many of the other Linux distros, ... 32 bit platforms are now excluded ...

It's unfortunate. But as I understand it, the main reason is that Linux Lite 4.0 is based on Ubuntu 18.04, and Ubuntu no longer supports 32-bit architecture. So it's an upstream problem.
Title: Re: Linux Lite 4.0 Final Released
Post by: drrdf on June 27, 2018, 05:39:33 PM
Vera: thank you for your reply. It seems that you have misunderstood my post and the purpose of it. Of course we are all very grateful to Jerry. It may be as whateverthing has posted that Ubunutu have ceased producing a 32-bit version, although I doubt it, since Ubuntu is mainly aimed at third world PCs which tend to be old. My point was in any case not moaning about a 32-bit version being no longer available, but about continuous bloat, which is now an increasing problem amongst more and more Linux distros. I moved over to Linux lite myself because I was previously using Linux Mint for many years but found their continuous bloat too much in the end. Finally I feel that to continue to call this OS Linux lite would be now misleading.

Of course I have investigated other Linux OSs as a result have found two which will run both on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs also without SSE2, and suit my needs. They are both based directly on Debian. My needs are little and I am not a gamer.

Whateverything: Thank you for your reply. What you suggest may be true; but if it is then I would think it goes against the ethos of Ubuntu, which seemed to concentrate on an OS for mainly third world PCs, which tend to be old?
Title: Re: Linux Lite 4.0 Final Released
Post by: Ottawagrant on June 27, 2018, 06:41:46 PM
To drrdf- I'm glad that Kubuntu, Lubuntu, or Xubuntu all have, with the Ubuntu 18.04 release, a 32bit version. I would not suggest using Kubuntu if you want a lighter OS. But with Lubuntu & Xubuntu 32bit is their core user base. Supported until April 2021. Can't beat that.
There was talk here about a year ago of doing a stripped down version of Linux Lite. Remove everything except the bare OS. Jerry has no time for it, and was not interested in the project. It was a community/fan based idea, and would have been run/supported by same. NOT for everyone, or someone new to Linux. But I thought it was an excellent idea. Maybe we can beat the drum & get some interest in getting the project going?
Title: Re: Linux Lite 4.0 Final Released
Post by: drrdf on July 08, 2018, 05:17:56 AM
Hi Ottawagrant,

Well in part that might be a good thing; but the remaining problem is SSE2. It seems very few 32-bit cpus support SSE2.

I have however found a solution myself. To continue to run a 32-bit PC without SSE2 the best OSs now are Q4OS and LXLE. Then if you use the browsers Midori, Qupzilla, QtWeb or TazWeb they seem to work in these OSs. (LXLE is supplied with SeaMonkey, but I find this slow and clumbsy.) I prefer Midori myself. Interestingly I found that Midori will not run in LinuxLIte on a 32-bit cpu without SSE2 for some reason, and almost instantly crashes. Since the last updates have been applied to version 3.8 I have found that Firefox and Synaptic Package manager continuously crash anyway on my 64-bit PC; this is probably due to faults resulting from changes in Ubuntu, but nevertheless it is all an example of, as real Engineers say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Software nerds have not yet learned that lesson.

Running my 64-bit dual core PC on LXDE there are none of these problems.

Hi @rijnsma

LL 4.0 is definitely the best looking Linux GUI out there imho. I also love that we now have a system sounds implementation to work with. I have a well paying client that I am building and investor version of Linux Lite for and am currently fine tuning Stefano Martin's ruby wrapper for the Alphavantage API., and LibreOffice Calc which CSV already defaults to. Have already set up Coinpare in ruby, which works wonderfully, and electrum which also works flawlessly. RVM and ruby work excellently in Linux Lite and I expect great results and satisfaction from my client who is not computer savvy at all. I've done all these things in Debian before but I chose LL specifically for this project because of its beautiful UI. This distro has a great future.

Tears in my eyes that great progs like Remastersys and Systemback die, but...
PinguyBuilder for Ubuntu-likes (the simple backup option for example) looks a great substitute.
It is in LL4 (thanks! If I did not install it earlier by myself in my wild quest for such a replacement),
but there are also .deb versions on the web easy installable via Gdebi.

Timeshift is very different. It does not make a live-medium. Very usefull too by the way.

In the BIOS you can define the boot order and set so it will boot from USB and using legacy mode.

Here is an example of doing this on one model of a HP Stream - http://blog.room34.com/archives/5260 (http://blog.room34.com/archives/5260)

As you have made your LIVE USB begin on step #3 of above link, instead of pressing F10 you may need to press the ESC key instead (I read on HP website for Stream 11 you need to press ESC key to enter BIOS on startup).

Thank you for your reply. I did find the md5sum. Md5sum is going by the wayside. Most are using sha256sum since the Mint iso hacks a couple years ago. I'm testing Lite for business and security is paramount.

Interesting comments around the 32bit subject.  I'm using LL4.0 on a 64bit, but I did recently install LL3.8 on a friend's 32bit laptop - if I'm not mistaken this is still supported till early 2021 (and is available still to download).

I can't recall the thread here, but one of the team Trinidad has suggested he might do a Debian version of LL 32bit, extending its life for another 10 years. Fingers crossed!
