Title: Linux Lite 3.8 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on January 31, 2018, 04:12:04 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.8 Final is now available for download. There have been a number of changes since the 3.6 release.
This is the last release for Series 3.x

Linux Lite 4.0 Final will be released on June 1st, 2018.

The changes for Linux Lite 3.8 include - more support for LibreOffice, regional support for DVDs, a Font Viewer/Installer and we now have our own Google based Search page as the home page in Firefox. We've also added TLP for Laptops to Lite Tweaks.

LibreOffice - We've added a Thesaurus (Synonyms) to LibreOffice for the US language.

Code: [Select]
mythes-en-us
For support in your language, just change the last country code:

Code: [Select]
mythes-de
so:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mythes-de
would be for the German Thesaurus.

If you are English based, keep the first 2 parts, and just change the last:

Code: [Select]
mythes-en-au
for Australian.

List of supported codes here - https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=mythes&searchon=names (https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=mythes&searchon=names)

Regionset - If you have DVDs that are from another region other than your own, you can now easily change region so that it will play in VLC.
Insert your DVD, open a terminal and type regionset and follow the onscreen instructions.
See this thread here for more information - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other-17/not-all-dvds-will-play/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other-17/not-all-dvds-will-play/)

Font Viewer - We've added a Font Viewer to make viewing and installing fonts easy.

Download a font from a reputable website. For example - Google Fonts or Dafont.

NOTE: To ensure a trouble free font installation process, make sure you choose and download fonts that are in the .ttf format.

In this example, we will download and install the Roboto font.

Right click on the font and choose Open with "Font Viewer".

Click on the Install button at the top right.

I am using 3.6 and  how can i upgrade to 3.8 using command line?
First click MENU and write and search " Lite upgrade" and click it. You will see windows about upgrading. Thats all

Updated my Asus laptop and it worked perfectly in a few minutes. Thank you.
However on my main computer I get a message to say  'no updates available' and if I try to Upgrade it says 'you are already running the latest version'

EDIT.
I changed the repository in 'Lite Souces' and now it perfect thanks :)

Next to attack my Acer laptop which is often a mess as it has optimus prime and doesn't like nvidia and new kernels  :'(

As I half expected I get a black screen with
"bbswitch: No suitable _DSM call found."

Still 2 out of 3 isn't bad

I selected menu>lite upgrade
this told me I am already using latest (3.6)
so >install updates
then lite upgrade to 3.8

As regards the other thread re "early" release & space/time - while it is still today here in the icy wastes of western Europe, it is already tomorrow in New Zealand.

Can't say much yet about the upgrade, except it went faultlessly, my firefox re-opened immediately as usual with all the same tabs open. I see the Welcome Screen, but I don't think I need that as it's an upgrade, I've already got drivers etc., but I'll let you know if any issues arise.

Many thanks to all who worked to bring us this great community-led OS!

As usual my posts are for the recently new like myself, the experts will have all the serious stuff.

Folks, very important that you don't skip over the release announcement if you intend to upgrade. I tested the upgrade until I was blue in the face so it should be perfect.

Don't forget to set a restore point first! The tools are there to help you, use them.

To those who have upgraded seamlessly, high five :)

This is usually caused by having another update window opened, the drivers modification program opened or any other windows trying to install/remove packages.
Follow Jerry's advice and make sure all programs are 100% closed before upgrading.

Cheers!

Wow! Awesome that it was released a little ahead of schedule! (by hours, but still.) I'd been looking forward to this release for awhile, so had been counting down the days & hours!

Thanks @Jerry for all your work. It's looking great! I did it differently on each of my 2 machines:

1. Did a fresh install on laptop (my secondary machine). It went smoothly. After installation I also made a new user account for my son, who sometimes needs it for homework. It's looking great! He can customize his area without affecting mine.

One thing which confused me a little but not a big deal, is a message when installing via live USB "No caching mode found". Then there was a blank screen. If I'd been new to Linux installations I might have thought something had gone badly wrong, but I knew to just wait and see what happened. Sure enough, everything was fine - so if others happen to see this message on a fresh install from live USB, just wait during the blank screen and it will be OK, the install will happen. I LOVED the gorgeous professional-looking explainer slider screen while the install is going!

The polished appearance of the whole experience was great overall, but slightly marred by the white feather on a yellow background during startup, which I was rather hoping would have been replaced by the new LL wallpaper or something. I'd customized my last setup specifically to replace that, and looks like I'll be repeating the process in 3.8. Still, this is a VERY minor thing and only a matter of personal taste, not a right/wrong thing.

2. Installed via the upgrade path on my main machine. I'd fetched updates first before starting, as recommended.  I didn't set a restore point via Systemback, but I'd backed up my data on external hard drive (my data files are much more important to me than my OS customizations, so I was willing to take the risk of not having a restore point as long as I had data stored externally). In any case it was a moot point: the upgrade worked smoothly and flawlessly.

I did one really dumb thing: I had a LibreOffice file open during the upgrade process /* facepalm moment */. It was my Admin Notes file, because I had been jotting things down in it related to upgrading, but I should really have thought to close that window first. Luckily, after rebooting the new system, LibreOffice was able to detect and repair the corrupted file!! Awesome!! I got all of my Admin Notes back! Everything else was fine, I'd closed other files before starting, so nothing else was affected.

3. Donation sent.

Awesome work Jerry! Thanks for a great distro!

thanks - actually the upgrade was trouble free, as per my earlier post, it was my subsequent attempt at software update which failed initially, but now works fine.
sorry I've taken a lot of space here on this, I'll shut up now and enjoy some browsing!

Did the upgrade on my Thinkpad X220 today. The whole operation (install updates (for 3.6), reboot, install upgrade, check for updates) took all of about 10-15 minutes. I already had TLP installed (highly recommended for Thinkpad users!) and Lite Tweaks recognized that.

@Jerry and the LL gang (sounds like a cool 50's music band ;) )

Did updates then upgraded from 3.6 to 3.8 32bits on three PCs. Everything went fine.

On full install though (on empty HDD) when selecting "Français" in the installer, it still hangs at after the file copy when selecting "Français" in languages. ("The installer has crashed..." message).
And as prior versions, when trying the install with the same settings a second or sometimes third time right after fail (no reboot), it goes all the way.

Installer in english then putting a language pack seems to work OK, but just wanted to let you guys know.

Thanks again for all the hard work on this great distro!

Cheers!

I'm sure this release is excellent as the others have been rock solid in the past. Thanks for working on such an incredible project. 6 years and still going strong! Downloading now!

My little HP "Travelbook" is getting this for sure. Put Linux Mint Cinnamon on here a few months back. Man, what was I thinking??? I have Distro-hopping fever again... Haha. Time for something stable! I also will try and put this on my ASUS ROG laptop. Didn't do this with the last release because my touchpad right click button wasn't working. Hopefully the kernel driver update for the Elan touchpad I have in Manjaro now has trickled down to LL.

Upgraded an older machine from 3.4 (updated) to 3.8. The update did not succeed and was greeted with a black screen...

I didnt know at the time it crashed, thought maybe it was taking a long time so I left the machine running.
I came back 2 days later and was still on black screen, had to hold power button to turn off PC.
On reboot it made a Kernel panic and stopped. Rebooted, same.

I held SHIFT on reboot and reverted back to previous 4.10 kernel and it booted ok.
Then trying to do updates it said installation was broken and I had to do a repair (sorry I didnt take note of the command but I think it was a dpkg --config something). It work on a bunch of packages for awhile and came back to prompt. Rebooted OK so I ran the updates (step 1) .
I had to leave but it seemed to be working. I'll see tommorow.

If you have any tests for me to do, I'll run them also.

Cheers!

Purchased 3.8 on DVD and had it shipped to me.

I've been a rush to get an old machine up and going for the grandchildren, and decided to go with Linux Lite.
Once I got that machine up and running with this OS, the machine hasn't had much rest.

Thanks Jerry, we're loving it!!!

Greetings, everyone.
I wish everyone health.

This is my first post on this forum.

I need to understand how many people are still using LL 3.8 x86 (32bit) and in no hurry to change the system?

My native language is Russian ( translated by https://www.deepl.com ).

Welcome, I think you will find the forum members very helpful with any questions you have.

I use LL 3.8 (32 bit) exclusively for all the older and even some of the newer laptops I use for my study group youth in South Africa.  I chose to stick with this for the following reasons:
1) because people are usually donating older laptops the majority have been 32 bit (although I am now getting more 64 bit ones) and most commonly the HDs are smallish (50 GB to 250 GB).
2) I really like "Systemback" and the ability to make restore points as I have had to resort to using these at times.
3) Until I no longer have 32 bit machines it is easier for me to run one L.L.OS on these laptops as it makes it easier to trouble shoot issues with any given laptop I have placed with a youth should a problem arise.

Hope this helps,
Janet

That's great.
The thing is, I use euphoria 3.1.1 in development ( http://rapideuphoria.com/ ) and I like it a lot better than openeuphoria ( https://openeuphoria.org ).
In addition, unlike the eternal beta 4 version of OE, Eu 3.1.1 works fine on all wins from 95 to 10 and is even included in the basic freedos package, but only 32-bit and is not built with gcc > 6.0 (i.e. ubuntu 16, debian 9, ...).

Whenever possible I'll switch to OE 4, but so far I'm fine with 3.1.1. Only fewer and fewer people are interested in 32-bit level systems like ubuntu 16, debian 9, ... and I don't think it's fair.

I have only one  32bit laptop that is working well. Excellent keyboard. I some time ago switched from LL3.8 32 bit to Debian 9 with non free drivers etc.  as I found the Debian to be  "lighter" with quicker responses etc.  Works very well as a basic machine.   .  Supposedly will be supported until June 2022?
Have not as yet tried Debian 10 32 bit,   Not therefore sure what effect it will have on performance.https://wiki.debian.org/LTS
