Release Announcement
Linux Lite 3.8 Beta is now available for testing. There have been a number of changes since the 3.6 release.
This is the last release for Series 3.x
Linux Lite 3.8 Final will be released on February 1st, 2018.
The changes for Linux Lite 3.8 include - more support for LibreOffice, regional support for DVDs, a Font Viewer/Installer and we now have our own Google based Search page as the home page in Firefox. We've also added TLP for Laptops to Lite Tweaks.
See below for all the changes:
LibreOffice - We've added a Thesaurus (Synonyms) to LibreOffice for the US language.
mythes-en-us
For support in your language, just change the last country code:
mythes-de
so:
sudo apt-get install mythes-de
would be for the German Thesaurus.
If you are English based, keep the first 2 parts, and just change the last:
mythes-en-au
for Australian.
List of supported codes here - https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=mythes&searchon=names (https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=mythes&searchon=names)

Regionset - If you have DVDs that are from another region other than your own, you can now easily change region so that it will play in VLC.
Insert your DVD, open a terminal and type regionset and follow the onscreen instructions.
See this thread here for more information - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other-17/not-all-dvds-will-play/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other-17/not-all-dvds-will-play/)
Font Viewer - We've added a Font Viewer to make viewing and installing fonts easy.
Menu, Accessories, Font Viewer.
Download a font from a reputable website. For example - Google Fonts or Dafont.
NOTE: To ensure a trouble free font installation process, make sure you choose and download fonts that are in the .ttf format.
In this example, we will download and install the Roboto font.
Right click on the font and choose Open with "Font Viewer".
Click on the Install button at the top right.
Once the font has installed, Font Viewer will show Installed at the top right.
Your newly installed font is now available in whichever text editing or graphics program you have installed.

TLP for Laptops - Lite Tweaks
From the TLP website:
TLP brings you the benefits of advanced power management for Linux without the need to understand every technical detail. TLP comes with a default configuration already optimized for battery life, so you may just install and forget it. Nevertheless TLP is highly customizable to fulfil your specific requirements.

yes iam too excited already , but I will wait for the final release yet theres something i wanted to ask you since i came here in first place, I mean iam sorry for that but *why* do you use google , I mean google is all great and lovely and pays alot but google ads cause people to block ads on our website because they hate googles privacy leak and same applies to the search engine , I mean if you were able to find an alternative (that even pays less) for google iam sure many will whitelist our website and even use that alternative search engine , anyway thanks for your time and I hope you *Keep It Up*

Great news! i'm not download this beta version on my pc, i'm waiting for buy a new laptop next year, and there i'm going to install the new 3.8
I hope the team's work will have prosperous, have sucess and good luck!! and happy new year!.

8) Hi Jerry,
Thanks for all your hard work, I'm especially liking the new font viewer/installer utility.
-
Does testing in a VM count? Hope it does cause that's what I did :) I don't have a spare hdd/pc to try it in bare metal, anyway, even for a VM LL 3.8 runs fast and smooth so far, it did took a while to boot but it might be due to the VM environment, I think. Changing language into Spanish was easy as usual. Installation process was a breeze, however, it took longer - 10 minutes - than in bare metal, but again it might be a VM thing. I really liked the "Gracias/thank you" screen, nice touch! Overall, good performance so far; no issues whatsover. Good work! By the way I'm writing this from the VM :)

thanks for the 3.8 advance feature notes, I'll certainly take a look at 3.8 in February. I wouldn't be competent enough to try a beta!
I am concerned about the google involvement - I want to continue to exclude google and to use my chosen privacy search engine as default in Firefox, both as default search and as homepage.
Please re-assure me ???

You will always have the freedom to choose. We would never take that away from anyone. Simply change your home page if you are doing a fresh install. If you are upgrading, we won't be imposing this on anyone.
-
Thanks Gerry, that's good.

New Bluetooth Headphones arrived.
Bluetooth A2DP worked out of the box :)
-
Hi Jerry, for some reason the mouse theme is not persistent for me. I have it set black but it returns to white after a reboot.

Probably not as it's viewed as non-essential.

Nice :)

Just a thought.
Could restricted-extras be added to the Welcome Menu......?.
Jocklad :)

Interesting problem this Morning.
Booted up LL 3.8x64 beta and it took about 10 minutes to get to the Desktop.
On the desktop it was a complete freeze........No mouse or keyboard.
Did a hard shutdown and removed the HDD.
Replaced the HDD and did a full re-install of the beta.
System is working perfectly.
Am fairly confident this was a HDD problem but thought I would let you know.

Thank you for your effort, i always had been using linux lite as reliable distro, sometimes as main distro and now definetly in dual boot with LM..as far as i have been "driving" beta, i did not feel it is beta at all..for me it is complete disto subjectively and i had no crashes..But release date of stable version is very soon and for now i will be patient

I am reporting the same problem that Mike was having with the mouse theme not lasting through a reboot (no problem if only logout or suspend). I have two laptops running LL3.6 updated to yesterday (both older models Core2 Duo Intel processors) and both have exactly same issue (black theme turns white on reboot). Have you had a chance to investigate this problem Jerry? Of course it is easily fixed by going to Mouse Theme and clicking Default followed by Black Theme and will stay black until next reboot. Not sure when this problem started but think before Xmas at least.
-
@DenW @Mike bug confirmed.
Workaround:
sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
(https://i.imgur.com/wImjHwp.png)
-
DMZ bug looks wide spread across distros. Anyone have an alternative 'non-flashy' basic mouse theme similar to DMZ that isn't buggy? I'd like to have the mouse theme working properly in 4.x
-
Thanks Jerry for your workaround but before I use it what exactly does it do and can it be undone?!
I am giving one of the laptops to my daughter and am reluctant to apply your workaround until I understand better what it does as she will not be using the terminal except by my remote control.
I was thinking of manually editing the /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme file to "Inherits=DMZ-Black", which should work as long as you want Black cursor theme as default (MX-16 has this in their file as they use a default dark theme on the desktop).
I tried Peppermint 8 and it works fine by default but I did notice the cursor changes from default white to black after user login and late in rest of bootup sequence (I know it is a mix of XFCE and LXDE but file setup for cursor theme is as for Linux Lite).
I also checked Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE but it fails in the same way that Linux Lite does.
Sorry cannot suggest alternative cursor themes as all distros I have seen use same themes.
-
It's set the default cursor theme and keeps it. Exactly what it should do.
-
@Jerry Thanks for looking into this. The OpenZone cursor theme is quite nice and not too flashy (in my opinion). https://github.com/ducakar/openzone-cursors
(https://cn.pling.com/img//hive/content-pre1/111343-1.png)
-
I use OpenZone too and agree @Mike it's nice and clean lines.
-
Thanks, looks like a good replacement. Any issues at all with this? Cursor size, changing from white to black etc?
-
I have had no problems with it, changing cursors or size. I use the ice blue slim option.
I began using it from the first LL I installed.

How did you install it? I got the theme in a VM and I can't change the size, and when I choose black and reboot, it goes to white.

Not on 3.8.
I d/l it from - https://www.xfce-look.org/p/999999/ (https://www.xfce-look.org/p/999999/)
I installed by unpacking and moving the files manually to the .icons folder. each style of this theme in its own folder, all other files for the theme are in main .icon folder.
I select them using Menu>All>Mouse and Touchpad
Click on the tab named "Theme"
On the right of the pane it displays a sample, above it says "Cursor Size", to the right are up/down buttons the size is increased using these.
-
Have you tried detach the mouse, whilst restart VB ?
To see if guest is saving default of host during save settings process, or a similar glitch in VB making it not save/reset.
Also the bottom right VB can attach host keyboard and mouse to guest,if you've done this on another VB may need to alter it for the test.
Clarity - I mean use menu settings of VB for detaching mouse, not unplug mouse itself , eg; you then have 2 cursors one inside the guest, and other in the host machine. Clicking in the guest join/attaches them again, so to make restart, then detach quickly, not to click inside the guest until it restarts fully etc
-
What is your output of:
cat /etc/alternatives/x-cursor-theme
-
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=DMZ-White
Using Openzone Ice Slim, which is white cursor with the blue artifacts, as the fire (orange ones) don't contrast well with the wallpapers I use.
Does it match your VB output for the same theme option and command ?
-
Can you do a quick video or gif of what it looks like on your pc.
-
What do you want to see, the cursor, the terminal output, mouse settings, folders its stored in ?
Will a screenshot/s be okay ?
Or I can do it with simplescreenrecorder and upload to youtube, then link it?
I don't know how to make gif.
-
I want to see all that you have mentioned. Youtube is preferred. Thanks.
-
@Jerry
Is this okay?

@Mike is correct.
@Jerry I cannot change the OpenZone cursors size either.
But...... https://sourceforge.net/p/lxde/bugs/725/ (https://sourceforge.net/p/lxde/bugs/725/)
Quote "SourceBugs" -
"And when I looked inside it's index.theme this is what I found;
[Icon Theme]
Name=Openzone Ice
Example=watch
So then I removed the Inherits= line in my other cursors, and now it's working, the /default/index.theme is changing, also the ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini is showing the new cursor too."
-

I began using it from the first LL I installed.
You've said you had no issue changing the cursor size for ice blue slim. Is that correct? If so, I'm confused now :(
-
If we cannot change the size of the OpenZone cursors, then it would be unfair to include them. Bummer :(
-
Would either @bitsnpcs or @Mike like to try this one on real hardware - https://www.xfce-look.org/p/999998/ download - https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/downloadfile/id/1480610488/s/075d0017cd4aed9036c4283d8f0a553c/t/1516081651/u//Hackneyed-0.5.1-pack.tar.bz2 and let me know if they can be resized, and stay after reboot. They have both left and right handed, very cool. Thanks.
-
I dont know about which kernel would be used as a base to 3.8 version and by default, and correct me if i am wrong in 3.6 is 4.4 99, well i made the update to version 4.12, and of course it is better, due i have in dual boot mx linux and so far those two distros are tbe best in battery saving, amd graphics saver but i say thank you for simplicity..When they say Arch is based on KISS i say no way..linux lite is definetly before then arch..
btw maybe i am little offtopic but could you maybe include graphical manager through which one can select kernel/apps etc..?
synaptic is ok but this would be nice GUI thing ;) or my knowledge is so limited i cant find available versions of generic(stable) kernels :P

Yes, I have resized it to the size 16 I preferred then once I knew this I just keep it/its why I chose it. I had tried other cursors before it. eg default, and 1 (maybe 2) others.
Now I see it doesn't resize on the more recent installs, and also I notice now it has no artifacts.
LL 2.2 ice slim has artifacts.
I should have rechecked before reply it is long time ago to remember, apology for wasting of the time.
I will try the cursors you put link of and get back soon if they can resize after reboot.

Would either @bitsnpcs or @Mike like to try this one on real hardware - https://www.xfce-look.org/p/999998/ (https://www.xfce-look.org/p/999998/) download - https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/downloadfile/id/1480610488/s/075d0017cd4aed9036c4283d8f0a553c/t/1516081651/u//Hackneyed-0.5.1-pack.tar.bz2 (https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/downloadfile/id/1480610488/s/075d0017cd4aed9036c4283d8f0a553c/t/1516081651/u//Hackneyed-0.5.1-pack.tar.bz2) and let me know if they can be resized, and stay after reboot. They have both left and right handed, very cool. Thanks.
The Hackneyed cursor resizes, but they do not hold after reboot, it returns to the default pointer.
Only the finger pointer for selecting software does hold at size 48 after reboot.
I tried right and left handed packs.
Used Linux Lite 3.2 kernel 4.9, tried on real hardware not VB.
I had thought to try the Assistive Technologies, as it says it can increase mouse size, so I wondered if it would remain after reboot, as work around for the lxde bug.
Turning on Assistive Technologies it says available at next login, it is not available after log out /login, or after reboot, so was unable to try that theory for increasing mouse cursor size and holding it after reboot.

Great to get questions like this because it shows that people are looking for specific things in an OS.
-
Thank you @bitsnpcs. Hopefully in Series 4.x we'll have better luck.
-
@Jerry it was interesting to join in with the community
Update -
the OpenZone ice artifacts do work correctly in LL3.2 kernel 4.9, only the processing was too quick/no waiting and so I didn't see any artifacts, as I was not doing many things lately, now I have checked further and with several things I see the artifacts are working <1 seconds as just small things I was doing, not usual I focus on mouse too much, but since the testing I did, and noticed.
Just in case anyone liked size 16 slim cursor like I do then they know now this is working, and I have corrected the earlier information given about artifacts.
For the question of resizing, no changes the resizing is not working in OpenZone and the others tested.

Linux Lite 3.8 Final has been built and now enters the testing phase. For the next 6 days we will be testing this operating system to ensure you receive a rock sold, freedom loving experience. See you all on 1st February for Linux Lite 3.8!

As mentioned above, buetooth and my expensive (i won them) SOny headphones work like a charm.
That little gui program for bt works superduper, i can see data sent and recieved :)
-
Hi @Jerry and the team! Amazing work cant wait for the release in two days!
I'm just curious what are the 'under the hood' tweaks and fixes. I'm more concerned about my laptops battery and ram performance!!
Once again thank to all of you!!
-
With today being the 30th the release of Linux Lite 3.8 is sooner than you think. Jerry releases it at Midnight, but that's Midnight New Zealand time. So, for example, if you live in the Eastern time zone it's available at 7 AM on the 31st. My bittorrent client is all ready to download & contribute. Kiwi chocolate coins all round & then break out the Freddo bars.

3.8 is already listed as released on distrowatch.com with a sourceforge download link :o is that legit?
edit: just noticed it's Jerrys sourceforge so I guess it's real ;D
-
@UltraCookie I just checked and it's listed as in development release https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=10070
In that link you can read the following: "Linux Lite 3.8 beta is now available for testing. There have been a number of changes since the 3.6 release. This is the last release for the 3.x series Linux Lite 3.8 final will be released on February 1st, 2018.
So whatever you saw it was either a mistake or something probably not legit.
Cheers! :)
-
Maybe distrowatch being a wee bit premature ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/8JwRk0u.png)
-
Oh..I didn't see that, just typed Linux Lite on search bar. However, I followed that link and took me here https://www.linuxliteos.com/download.php no sourceforge download link but for LL 3.6 only. But yes, I also saw that they marked LL 3.8 release day 30-01-2018, so your statement might be accurate
Maybe distrowatch being a wee bit premature ;D

-
If you click on "3.8" it brings you directly to the sourceforge download page for 3.8. ;)
-
What to do after the release?
Just hit Update?
Question from a noob :P
-
If you click on "3.8" it brings you directly to the sourceforge download page for 3.8. ;)
Yes, you're right. I just tried and LL 3.8 started downloading. However, I believe is the beta release since unlike 3.6 link it doesn't say it's the latest release so they actually haven't "officially" said final-stable release is out. We know official release it's on February 1st :)
PS: Did I just write the word release 4 times? lol ;D
-
@CSNLinux after release run updates, lite-upgrade should get an update. If so run lite-upgrade.
that's how I will do it.
-
What to do after the release?
Just hit Update?
Question from a noob :P
That's completely up to you; you could download the new iso file and make a fresh new install or, you could hit start key on your keyboard, type lite upgrade, hit enter and let the little tool do its job. ;)
Hope this helps! :)
-
3.8 out before its own release?
Ah, those darn time travel problems!
Jerry should be more careful with the space time continuum.
Cheers!
-
FYI - DMZ theme looks to be fixed on 18.04 base. Lets hope it stays that way. I'm going to bundle the Openzone themes into 4.x too. Changing size still does not work.

Thank You @Jerry :)
I use and like these cursors a lot.
