Title: Linux Lite 3.4 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on February 28, 2017, 12:01:11 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.4 Beta is now available for testing. There have been a number of changes since the 3.2 release. See below for all the changes.
Linux Lite 3.4 Final will be released on April 1st, 2017.

Lite Updates Notify - A new application for Linux Lite. Lite Updates Notify is a desktop notification that informs the user of all available updates. Menu, Favorites, Install Updates should be run before executing Lite Updates Notify for the first time. A HUGE thank you to Ralphy for his collaboration on this challenging application.

1. Menu, Settings, Lite Updates Notify.

2. Select a notification frequency.

3. When you receive your desktop notification, you will get either of two messages:

This is a notification only. Go to Menu, Favorites, Install Updates if the notification says you have updates to install. This is an optional application, you do not have to use it if you don't want to and it is disabled by default.

16.04.2 Base - Linux Lite 3.4 is based off 16.04.2, however, we do not include the 4.8 kernel Hardware Enablement Stack. The HWE stacks were never meant to be supported for the entire life of the LTS release. In the past, support has been limited between HWE releases. I prefer to offer people the option to switch to one of our custom kernels should you require newer hardware support, not forcefully impose a newer kernel where it is not necessary or where it may drop support for older hardware.

Lite Welcome - Has been improved by recommending people follow a basic 3 step post-install process. Install Updates > Install Drivers > Setting a Restore Point.

Window snapping by default - Dragging windows to the corners and snapping windows which is a feature familiar to Windows users, is now available in Linux Lite 3.4 Thank you to torreydale for this suggestion.

Joystick support - New in Linux Lite, better support for joysticks.

Changelog:

Kernel 4.4.0-65 (custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 4.10)
Firefox 51.0.1
Thunderbird 45.7.0
LibreOffice 5.1.6.2
VLC - 2.2.2
Gimp 2.8.20
Base: 16.04.2

There is no upgrade to or from Beta releases. Beta releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Developer credits for this release - Jerry Bezencon, Ralphy

Eager to try this release out! I'll install the 3.4 Beta on a spare 2009 HP Slimline desktop I recently picked up from my neighbor's trash pile out in the front of his yard. Wonder what was that about. It ran Windows Vista so that might be a reason within itself! Thank you Linux Lite team for putting in hard work and effort into all the release done thus far!

Cheers Teddy, always great to hear from you :)

@Jocklad - thank you for your detailed feedback, it is really appreciated. I only have so much hardware here to test releases on, so the more people that help with testing, the more solid LL will end up. We have a great community here :)

Thanks for the detailed reports bitsnpcs. Report #1 - "failed to write file '/home/bitsnpcs/.cache/xfce4-notifyd-theme.rc.3W2NWY:write() Failed no space left on device." your VM was probably too small. I usually set my VM's to at least 20gb. Ideally, tests would be performed on real hardware. But all feedback is appreciated. :)

I only had the VM set to 10Gb, I know now for next time making, thank you. :)
I don't have a spare desktop at the moment.

Ran 64 bit Live DVD on HP dc770p as per my profile.  Wired LAN -.  All seemed to work smoothly after UK keyboard  setting adjustment ( language).  Browser, sound, video streaming, Libre Office, Gimp all worked flawlessly.    As did SAMSUNG  mono 1520 printer and Canon LIDE120 scanner.   Even under high simultaneous use,  system resources (CPU / Memory) did not MAX above 60%.

Thanks again to the team.

Already hyped for the new release ;D Will do some testing from a live stick when I'm back at my place. No full install of the beta for me since I need all my machines for work. Even though all previous betas ran pretty stable an my laptop so far I don't want to mess it up.  ;D

Good thing you mentioned it Jerry, which makes sense. I had the automatic notify turned off. The idea of a Beta is to test it. I hadn't given it much thought because it's the same as with the Beta for Linux Lite 3.2. I'm using it as a day-to-day machine to see if anything comes up. Installed it days ago & there's just nothing to tell. Xubuntu & Linux Lite seem to have the best Beta's.

Lite Upgrade has been fully tested.

- Linux Lite 3.0 - Linux Lite 3.4, working on 32bit and 64bit
- Linux Lite 3.2 - Linux Lite 3.4, working on 32bit and 64bit

So I ran the 32-bit Beta on the mini...

Install went without issue or error - even without a connection to the internet which was the only problem, I'll have to dig into but first...

So the mini is solely a LL3.2 machine.
Running the beta installer I was prompted to run along side 3.2  :D
I chose something else; so I could partition the remaining free I had..

I choose all the defaults.. No to extras, no to updates..
As mentioned straight forward and easy...

Haven't gotten a chance to try anything more within due to NIC's issue described below..

Upon attempting to connect to WiFi would not finalize, entered SSID password network icon would begin to spin then system would hang and had to force a reboot. Tried hardwired which did not connect, link lights gave status... Running same kernel (4.4) in LL3.2, maybe something else?
WiFi was replicated in Live Environment...

I plan to double check the md5, recreate my USB and give another go...

Title: Re: Linux Lite 3.4 Beta Released
Post by: firenice03 on March 06, 2017, 10:32:52 PM
So MD5 checked out - redid the USB.. In the LIVE after entering the WiFi password, system locked up. The same occurred within the installer and after install. Until driver is updated - this is a usb adapter rtl8192cu.. Something to be aware of as other beta/finals never "locked"/"froze" up.

For 3.4 - pretty slick.
Window Snapping worked well (gimp was only app that didn't snap)
Hibernate worked right off; no errors or blank screens when waking. Power Manger set for closing lid.
Welcome Screen used for all but a restore point thus far...
Update Notifier set - waiting for the 1st notice...

The following worked to update the WiFi:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/471208/realtek-wireless-adapter-issues-rtl8192ce-and-rtl8192cu

@firenice03, individual driver issues cannot be addressed. If we committed to this, I can't begin to imagine the workload it would create :( All the same, your info will help others.
Would love to hear more on window snapping to ensure we have covered everything we need to in that area. @torreydale, have we covered everything in regards to window snapping etc?

I haven't tested the 3.4 beta yet.  To make window snapping work, I just change the two settings I mentioned in Window Manager and Window Manager Tweaks.  That tends to work for me.  If they're embedded changes as part of 3.4, I assume it should work the same as when I manually make the changes.

GIMP is such a large window, I don't think it tends to snap regardless.  I don't think it even snapped in another distribution with snapping enabled by default like Mint Cinnamon.

I'm happy to see the change added.  I think it'll be a welcomed addition.

Yes, informational.. FYI ;D ;D... Mentioned as I had to hard boot - previously it just didn't work..

As for snapping:
Office - Writer & Calc; Image Viewer, Terminal, FireFox, Archive Manager, Leafpad, Thunar, VLC and GParted all snapped..

Snapping seemed to work on all 7 positions, Upper Right, Upper Middle, Upper Left, Lower Right and Lower Left corners along with Right Side Middle and Left Side Middle..

Gimp, Lite Welcome, Lite Software, Lite Tweaks were some that did not snap..

I am on the mini with a 1024x600 resolution, I am able to easily find the positions but could be limited with those application that didn't...

@firenice03,

Your snapping results are what I expect.  However, I'm not sure why the 3.x series doesn't snap to the center bottom, only left bottom or right bottom.  It does snap to the center bottom in the 2.x series, though.  Maybe it's an XFCE thing.

@torreydale
I'll double check it, I believe I have the toolbar set to auto-hide which maybe invoking the tool bar vs. the snap..

I'll confirm this evening - or its me LOL
Title: Re: Linux Lite 3.4 Beta Released
Post by: torreydale on March 07, 2017, 02:24:41 PM
@firenice03,

I think it might be related to the change between XFCE 4.10/4.11 -> XFCE 4.12.  In the 2.x series, snapping to the center top fills the top half of the screen.  Snapping to the center bottom fills the bottom half of the screen.  But in the 3.x series, snapping to the center top effectively maximizes full screen.  And snapping to the center bottom does nothing.  I'm not testing LL 3.4 Beta right now, but that was the behavior I was getting in a LL 3.2 virtual machine.  If you're getting the same results using the beta, that is consistent with what I've seen in the 3.x series (once I activate snapping, of course).

@torreydale
That sounds right - Center Top filling upper half..
Currently it gives more options than Win7... Left Half/Right Half or Top goes full screen..

Kudos!!!

Checked.. in 3.4 snapping to Top Center = Full Screen

Nothing occurs when snapping Center Bottom (tool bar is active - not hiding)

If you don't have the Panel Preferences set to Intelligently hide the panel, I don't think it is going to.

I know... 3.4 is still in the default set up... I had it set to hide in 3.2... Couldnt remember what I had configured when I tested last night and what other items I tested, setup and/or configured...

But its working good, think its a nice add...

Linuxlite 3.4x64 beta.

Updating:

Got a "Could not fetch updates" error this morning.

Internet connection was ok.

Re-booted and it updated no problem.

No idea what caused it.

Post by: Ottawagrant on March 08, 2017, 11:15:38 AM
Just to say that the 'Lite updates notify' is working fine. Got a message this morning when updates were available, including a new kernel. Updated, rebooted & it lets me know every hour, on the hour, that my system is up to date. I removed the old kernel using 'lite tweaks' after a reboot. There was a quirk in LL 3.2 when I would remove the old kernel by 'lite tweaks' I would get an error message after the old kernel was removed. But, when I would remove an old kernel via synaptic (Linux-headers, image, extra & generic) I didn't get an error message. So it might of been a 'lite tweaks' problem. Not getting that in the 3.4 beta.

Thus far stable and patiently awaiting 4/1  8).... I did see something software related, although not directly related to 3.4 or the new features. - For an awareness..

Tried connecting to VPN, "Add a VPN Connection" is grayed and not selectable. Command line seems to work in lieu of.

I reloaded beta, prior to running updates "Add a VPN Connection" was selectable, after updates completed again grayed out.

For those using anyconnect/openconnect: In terminal enter the below adding your server in place of SERVER.
Code: [Select]
sudo openconnect SERVER
Perhaps a future update will correct but should 3.4 go live this should suffice as a work around..

Thanks for the workaround firenice03. You can also just go to Edit Connections and create one there :)

Are there any more bugs to report? Due to my forthcoming workload, I'll be completing the testing phase late next week. Cheers :)

The wallpaper is 'Fireworks' as chosen by the community in a recent Poll. The conky is Lite Widget, released in LL 3.2
