Title: Linux Lite 3.2 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on October 31, 2016, 07:00:02 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.2 Final is now available for download. The overall theme of this release is a focus on Security. Linux Lite will now download and install the latest Linux kernel security updates when they become available via Install Updates. In this release we introduce for the first time the Lite Desktop Widget. This features basic system information as well as Updates status to emphasize the importance of keeping your computer up to date. Also in this release we've included several theme enhancements, lots of updates to our Lite packages, as well as the usual fixes from the 3.2 Beta.

Lite Desktop Widget - A new optional feature that displays basic system information, including Updates Status that reports the last time you installed Updates. A portion of the code for this widget was outsourced, so thank you to those who support and donate to Linux Lite. To enable this after installation, go to Menu, Settings, Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab, tick Lite Desktop Widget.  Logout then Login again, the widget will appear at the bottom right hand corner of your screen after a few seconds of logging into your Desktop. If you want transparency for the widget, go to Menu, Settings, Window Manager Tweaks, Compositor tab, tick Enable display compositing. The Updates Status will refresh information every 5 minutes eg. 5 minutes after you update, the status will change to Your system was recently updated providing there were any updates installed.

Red - system is overdue for updates, update now
Green - system was updated within the last 3 days
Yellow - a reminder that it's time to update your system

The Lite Desktop Widget shows 5 stages of Status (color coded messages):

1. System never updated - displayed after a fresh install of Linux Lite (will not change status until updated packages have actually been installed)
2. Your system was recently updated - will display 5 minutes after updates have been applied
3. 6hrs since your last update - hourly update reminders
4. 4 days since your last update - after the 3rd day, the reminder will turn yellow
5. 8 days since your last update - after the 7th day, the reminder will turn red

Grub - Linux Lite should now multi boot with other distros. I've tested this in multi-scenarios as shown in the image below:

Things to be aware of - If you want Linux Lite at the top of Grub, use Grub Customizer - http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/04/install-grub-customizer-ubuntu-16-04-lts/ (http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/04/install-grub-customizer-ubuntu-16-04-lts/) It allows you to set up Grub to your liking. Hopefully, this puts to rest any previous concerns about Grub not playing nice with other distros. In summary, Linux Lite now multi-boots with other operating systems, the only change you should ever need to make, and this is purely personal, is the order in which they show in the Grub Menu.

Upgrading - I've listened to all the feedback in the past regarding upgrading in Linux Lite and there still appears to be some confusion over how we do this, even though it's been clearly explained, we cannot overcome perception. The solution to this, is to revert back to our standard method which is to do:

> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade

Lite Upgrade - What it will do:

- Lite Desktop Widget
- New Terminal theme
- New Lite Welcome
- New Lite Tweaks
- New Lite Manual
- New Lite Software
- New Resource Usage theme
- Newest Linux Kernel
- New Wallpapers
- Bug fixes, enhancements
- Better contrasting Icons (Faenza Dark)
- Back up your existing config files to: /home/user/.llupgradebackup/3.0/

Lite Upgrade - What it won't do:

- New Grub config (potential to ruin peoples existing multi-boot setups)
- New Boot Splash (3.0 users may have grown used to it)
- Comprehensive sources.list (risk to peoples existing sources.list file, you will still get Linux kernel security updates)

There is no upgrade path to or from Beta releases.
There is no upgrade path from Series 2 ( 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 ) to Series 3.

Kernel & Install Updates - With Security at the forefront of most peoples minds these days, we in the linux world should be just as vigilant. Linux Lite will now automatically download and install the latest Ubuntu kernel via Install Updates. In order for this to work, we've changed the code in Install Updates from upgrade to dist-upgrade. I've been running dist-upgrade for a number of weeks now and although in the past I've recommended against it, our OS is now to a state where there should be no adverse affects. Just remember, over time kernels will build up in your system, run the Kernel Removal tool in Lite Tweaks to clean out your system periodically.

Some explanation:

apt-get upgrade - This command upgrades all installed packages.

apt-get dist-upgrade - Tells APT to use "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. Not to be confused with do-release-upgrade which would upgrade you from one LTS to the next.

Lite Welcome - Has been updated and now includes the convenience of upgrading from the Start section.

Improved Boot Splash - Now easier on the eyes and displays the Eject message at the end of installation more clearly.

Resource Usage - better contrasting

Updated Terminal theme  - better contrasting

Thunderbird 45.4.0
LibreOffice 5.1.4.2
VLC - 2.2.2
Gimp 2.8.18
Base: 16.04.1
WhiskerMenu - latest

Additional Changes:

New - Wallpapers (community selected)
New - 'Release Notes' link on installer now opens 'Start' page in the Help Manual
Fixed - Mime type for debian packages should now open with Gdebi by default
Fixed - Lite User Manager - /var/mail/ error after removal of user
Updated - comprehensive sources.list

Hi Jerry: Thank you for clarifying one point I had forgotten. That you cannot upgrade from a Beta 3.2 to a Release 3.2. Because Linux Lite 3.0 was a fresh install I could not remember what we did back in 2.8. I had been using the Beta, but had planned to do a fresh install anyway. Nothing like a freshly installed OS. Thank you for all your, and contributors, hard work.

Ok that must have been a glitch on the server or something.
It was showing as upgraded and wouldn't let me do it via LiteUpgrader, yet I had the output I indicated.

I have now re-booted 3 times and on the third time I was notified that 3.2 was available.
I have installed it on both machines and it and the widget are working fine.
A big thanks to you all.

Just upgraded from 3.0 to 3.2 in VM Guest on LL2.8 host, working just fine.
Also, happy to see that during upgrade, dialog box showing what is actually going on instead of just "this can take a while".

Great work, thanks Jerry and LL team!

For someone running/installing updates from the CLI, does this mean it would be advisable to use in the future
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Thanks :)

Upgraded yesterday with some minor confusion. Tried "Install Updates" first. It showed some updates related to 3.2. Didn't think that was correct so tried up Lite Upgrade but it said upgrade was not available. Went back and did "Install Updates" then upgrade worked. I must have missed reading something in instructions somewhere.

Upgrade worked great!  ;D Changed my personal login in sound back to default (easily fixed) but did not change my dark splash screen.

Hi Coastie,
I noticed it changed my custom login sound back to default too, but I just changed it back after install. It did keep my custom wallpaper and login and boot splashes and script changes with no problem, which was really nice. The screenfetch commands in my .bashrc file did not update, but I just took them out and reentered them and all was well. Smooth smooth upgrade. Grub installation worked smoothly as well with two other Linux distros on the disk, and LL booting last in the order.

/boot/startupsound.wav I rename the sound I use to the stock name and replace the stock one because in the past I have had a problem with auto starting the sound I actually use, the Ubuntu startup sound.  :-[

Hi guys, thank you very much for another great release.

I couldn't find any mention of the upstream issues with AMD/ATI and the 16.04 LTS... Does this version of LL still have those?

Thanks very much!

ATTENTION ALL WHO UPGRADED:

There was a bug in Lite Upgrade. This is now fixed. Please run:

Menu, Favorites, Install Updates
Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade

I know this is pain for some to run this again, but if I don't fix this properly now, we will have this bug every upgrade.

Quote from: Release Notes for 16.04

Canonical will not be supporting the fglrx/Catalyst Linux driver in their archive beginning with Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus. There's nothing stopping anyone from downloading the latest release from AMD.com and installing the driver directly or generating the Debian packages from that -- assuming upstream Linux kernel and xorg-server compatibility -- but it's not being supported by upstream Ubuntu.

For most users, the open-source Radeon graphics stack is "good enough" particularly if you just care about desktop use-cases, video playback, and light gaming. However, currently the open-source Radeon Linux graphics stack only supports OpenGL 4.1 rather than OpenGL 4.5, the open-source OpenCL compute stack leaves a lot to be desired, and there are other current open-source AMD driver limitations that for some users will make switching to the open-source driver a regression in experience and performance.

Well, I understood "For most users, the open-source Radeon graphics stack is "good enough" particularly if you just care about desktop use-cases, video playback, and light gaming." I am clueless about that open stack stuff.  ::)

Hopefully, that will not be a problem using Linux Lite.

Excellent job for LL3.2, Jerry & all the devs.

One thing I'm intrigued about with LL3.2. Most of the time I use an ESET antivirus for Linux though apparently it is not supported by SystemD - I found that out when I tried to install it on Lubuntu 16.04 for my son - needless to say it wasn't compatible.  However, with LL 3.0 and 3.2, ESET works out of the box ... well done for that.

The upgrading from LL3.0 to 3.2 went smoothly.  However, it had the unintended consequence of upgrading an older version of Supertuxkart (0.8.1-2) to the current 0.9 version, which I didn't want as the graphics card in the PC is too old to run 0.9.  How can I prevent LL doing this in future series upgrades?

Many thanks for any advice on the above and keep up the great work that you and all the devs do

Regards
Mike

LL Jerry = Ladies LOVE Jerry or linux lite Jerry,

thanks for all your work.

Lite upgrade from 3.0 to 3.2 not working on my desktop. the Upgrade in the menu is not available (I looked very closely) even searchbared the update and upgrade did not get it.
I wonder if the package did not get installed initially for some reason
FYI
it is a tri-boot system W10, WVista, LL3.0 and I had a bear of a time getting that to work but I can boot all 3 os's native now (not virtual)
I wonder if the package was missed or corrupted in the original LL3.0 install?  I had great difficulty just getting it to update period.

info below from term commands

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/llver
Linux Lite 3.0p5qlinux@p5qlinux-Desk:~

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade

I too briefly suffered from the eluded Lite Upgrade... I checked my repo's and the LL repo was unchecked once checked and updates ran, the Lite Upgrade was available...

I figured I inadvertently unchecked it... Pretty sure it was the citrine repo; not by my pc to confirm tho...
Maybe the same for you???

I did on my lappy
> Menu, Favorites, Install Updates
> Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade
Worked great this option is missing on my desktop though
yes it was disabled in the list
When I enabled the repo I got an error.  looked at my working laptop and I guess? it was pointed to xenial and needed to be citrine
Once I changed that and updated
The menu options were there thanks to all I wont muck up the thread any more.

running LL3.2 since this morning on my desktop, i have installed Pragha music player on it and Papirus gtk icons.
Also my usual progs. like: radiotray, synapse, redshift and dropbox.
It was a difficult choice between LinuxLite and Mx16beta, but since LL is final.... the choice was made and i am really happy with it.
At first i thought LL was for beginners, but it is also a great choice for the average user!
A big thanx to Jerry and the dev.team for this great distro.

I would second that. I use it for everything except the sort of  advanced music notation software such as Sibelius.
LL has a great offer of intelligently-chosen software, the best manual, and is stable and solid.

Since the release of Lite 3.2, I can't seem to upgrade anything at all. Some error while upgrading lite-software seems to be stopping it.

Code: [Select]
Preconfiguring packages ...
Setting up lite-software (2.0-0200-linuxlite) ...
sed: can't read /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing package lite-software (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 lite-software
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Any suggestions?

So Installed LL3.2 (64bit non-UEFI) to a HP 6005; I've had for a while but was my Win7, VM, Work etc etc etc box, got the Win10 update... yada yada Its a dual core w/ 8gb Ram... Well its moving on to the boys (the optiplex 160 got to "laggy").

So it gets wiped out and a reload, Win10 once again just on the half chance and LL3.2 cause as such the printer still works and it just works... It'll be good for the boys to try things in both worlds :)

So there is no UEFI or Secureboot in the bios... It was pretty straight forward popped in the LL3.2 LiveUSB chose something else. Its 1 disk with 4 partitions Swap and Root (with home) and the other OS having 2. At first I tried installing grub to the LL root sda, the system didnt see it until I installed grub to the main sda (reinstalled LL).
Once corrected LL boots right up with no issues.

Couple things I have to update/modify
- Wireless USB -- UPDATED (RTL8192CU)
- Per the manual added HPLIP for my hp lj1000
- Update display resolution 1280x1024 currently at 1024x728 had to do the same with the other system..

Did set to sleep/hibernate in power manger; got an error pop up showing when awaking - maybe Lightlocker related but changed a couple settings and will confirm...

Had to run updated/upgrade to display LL3.2 when running
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/llver
All in All - Another smooth install :) 8) 8)

Fixed the resolution and sleep/hibernate.. A better monitor at some point would be correct the display but its running :)
Set lightlocker to never in power settings seemed to correct the error I was getting....

Posted to the hardware DB just after midnight this morning :)
