Title: Linux Lite 3.2 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on October 05, 2016, 04:16:17 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.2 Beta is now available for testing. There have been a number of changes since the 3.0 release. See below for all the changes.

Lite Desktop Widget - A new optional feature that displays basic system information, including Updates Status that reports the last time you installed Updates. A portion of the code for this widget was outsourced, so thank you to those who support and donate to Linux Lite. To enable this after installation, go to Menu, Settings, Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab, tick Lite Desktop Widget.  Logout then Login again, the widget will appear at the bottom right hand corner of your screen after a few seconds of logging into your Desktop. If you want transparency for the widget, go to Menu, Settings, Window Manager Tweaks, Compositor tab, tick Enable display compositing. The Updates Status will refresh information every 5 minutes eg. 5 minutes after you update, the status will change to Your system was recently updated providing there were any updates installed.

The Lite Desktop Widget shows 5 stages of Status (color coded messages):

Red - system is overdue for updates, update now
Green - system was updated within the last 3 days
Yellow - a reminder that it's time to update your system

1. System never updated - displayed after a fresh install of Linux Lite
2. Your system was recently updated - will display 5 minutes after updates have been applied
3. 6hrs since your last update - hourly update reminders
4. 4 days since your last update - after the 3rd day, the reminder will turn yellow
5. 8 days since your last update - after the 7th day, the reminder will turn red

Grub - Linux Lite should now multi boot with other distros, whilst remaining easily distinguishable to Windows folks in a dual boot environment. I look forward to your feedback in regard to these changes.

Improved Boot Splash - Now easier on the eyes and displays the Eject message at the end of installation more clearly.

Did a fresh install of LL 3.2x64, from a flash drive, on my older HP with 8gb of memory. Easily the fastest install of a Linux Lite OS yet. From start to finish I think it took 5 minutes. Even installing software I like, & removing 1 or 2 that I don't use, only took a few minutes. I'll report any oddities or bugs, but nothing yet. If you hadn't of said it was a beta I would never know. The darker splash screen on boot up is much better on the eyes.

Thanks, Jerry and team!

Sorry for my bad English...

Mini-PC Intel NUC5PPYH CPU N3700 HD Graphics. One issue: if in Installer to select English language, then all OK, installation successfully completed, but if in Installer to select Russian (Русский язык) language, then after find and configuring hardware, installing system (Поиск оборудования / Настройка оборудования / Установка системы) the Error observed, Installer to stop forced (Программа установки аварийно завершилась).

The same problem was in Linux Lite 3.0 Beta and Linux Lite 3.0 RELEASE. I am sorry, that I not reported about this issue. Workaround: to use English language in installer.

Thanks dmitry, there has been no announcement yet regarding language during install, this is why we have the Language guide in the Help Manual. Hopefully one day I have that eureka moment and figure out why it's not doing it :)

Linux Lite Widget. Bad symbols (abracadabra :-) under Version line. English language in Lite Installer and Russian Yekaterinburg Time Zone. Locale by default on screenshot.

@dmitry, can you please open: ~/home/youruser/.conky/widget and change line 9 from override_utf8_locale no to override_utf8_locale yes
See if that works.

Have just done a clean install of LL 3.2 64 bit.

Install was very fast despite using a very old pata hdd.

One thing I did notice when going into synaptic you cannot change the server location it only gives an option to reload

which does nothing.

Otherwise looking good  :)

now to give it a good run.

Thanks Jocklad, I'm working on that Synaptic issue. It's actually tied to Grub funnily enough.

Hi

System configuration below and I cannot get it to run the drivers install from the Welcome Screen
Nothing happens.  Can only start up in "nomodeset" as the system logs in ok but it does not initialise my monitor.

I have completed a full system update upgrade and rebooted

What command would I run from the terminal to see any further output ?

Thanks in advance Zeb...

update - just rebooted after installing the nvidia drivers manually and it now boots full screen.

The "Install Drivers" still does not work and the errors were in the terminal output I posted but at least I now have 3440 x 1440 on my main screen and 1920x1080 on my secondary screen.

My system is open to use for any testing you need carried out with this setup.

Anything that opens software-properties-gtk will not work in the Beta. This includes: Repository selection, Additional Drivers etc. This all ties into how the system is 'labeled' within certain files in Ubuntu based distros. Grub also looks at this labeling and reads the info, so this is all one, intertwined issue. It's quite messy. I've already made the announcement that Grub will play nicely with other distros, the only way for now to get Grub and other pars of the system to work properly is to read the label 'Ubuntu'. This will fix the other bugs that are reported here in regards to software-properties-gtk.

So to summarize, those who dual/multi-boot with Windows and other linux distros, the Linux Lite Grub menu entry will show as 'Ubuntu'. This is one of the reasons I originally had grub only set to work with Windows. There is some regret here with the new method, but I am torn between trying to keep 2 camps happy. We do not target existing linux users, but we're a linux distro, so it's bound to happen regardless.

One I noticed this morning.

On initial boot the lite-widget did not show any updates available.

A manual check showed updates available.

On reboot the lite-widget did see the updates.

We're not including that project anymore. I've been looking at a new approach for a Control Center, but it's too early to early to release any information yet.

Too bright for me but big improvement over default in 3.0. I can easily change it though. Can the system information "conky" be moved to the center of the desktop?

Can the system information "conky" be moved to the center of the desktop?

Yes, conky is of course editable. Make a backup first (/home/user/.conky/widget), change:

Code: [Select]
# Text alignment, other possible values are commented
alignment bottom_right

to whatever you like, reference - http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html see 'alignment'

Sounds complicated. I played with Conky Manager some time ago and a few Conkies but I uninstalled them. I think I remember you could right click on a Conky to change size or location. Will Conky Manager work on this LL Conky?

I missed along the way about when 3.2 will be released. I'm going to be setting up a thin client network to use in a classroom instructional environment, ten machines, all old HP's and Dell's which have worked quite well for me with Linux Lite. Hopefully by Thanksgiving here, (end of November). I'd like to run LL on the clients. I can use 3.0 as long as the upgrade path is seamless, but I would prefer the newer release to start this. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for 3.2 beta, Gerry. I've tried both the 32bit and 64bit versions on an old Dell XPS laptop (Intel Core2, Intel wireless). Noticed two issues affecting both 32bit and 64bit versions:
Otherwise no issues found. I like the fact that you can always see that something is happening while an update is in progress. Previously it seemed to hide while busy (for me, anyway!)

Regards,
Richard.

Saturday morning I finished a refurb on an old Dell Optiplex 320 (tear down and clean, replace a couple blown MOBO caps, redo a couple internal issues, add an new/old HDD, and DVD from old parts, re-anchor paste cpu etc. added a couple gig a new/old ram) for the first of the thin clients I intend to run LL on for instructionals. Sunday morning I loaded LL 3.0 from dvd iso. This morning I upgraded to LL 3.2. Not a single hitch other than adjusting resolution. About ten whole minutes for the upgrade. !!!! Impressive. The new widget is gorgeous, the upgrade path flawless. What a great job by all involved with Linux Lite. Much appreciation!!! I uploaded the hardware config on the Dell refurb to the database. Thanks again!
