Title: Linux Lite 3.0 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on May 31, 2016, 08:02:07 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 3.0 Final is now available for download. A lot has changed since Series 2. We have a new Login Manager, new Boot Theme, Lite Software has had an overhaul, new System Theme (Arc), we've added Share Hardware Configuration (Lite Info), Folder access from the Menu and Upgrades are now automated and seamless in Series 3. In addition, there has been a lot of bug fixes and adjustments since the Beta release, thanks again for your feedback.

Presenting Linux Lite 3.0 Final

Default Wallpaper - the default Final wallpaper represents the colors of our gem codename - Citrine accompanied by the Linux Lite logo.

Lite Software - Lite Software has had an overhaul. We've added icons where there were Select boxes (thank you Misko). This helps people who identify with images and branding to easily locate their favorite software. You can select multiple programs to install by holding down Ctrl or Shift. We've also added Audacity (audio editor), Calibre (eBook reader and manager) and Pinta (Windows Paint.Net look-a-like) thanks to your suggestions.

Folders access from the Menu - Another community suggestion that fits perfectly with those transitioning from Windows, our target audience. Menu, My Computer.

New Login Screen - By common request, the new Login Screen is now keyboard navigable. Press Tab (for the login box) and F10 (for the Shutdown/Reboot menu). You can also now customize the Login screen. Open the Menu and type in 'lightd' and select LightDM GTK+ Greeter settings.

Share Hardware Configuration (Lite Info) - With this new addition, we've already had 600+ submissions to the Linux Lite Hardware Database (1800+ computers in total since the beginning). Now included starting with Series 3, this software helps those who are potentially looking to install Linux Lite, to see what computers other people are running Linux Lite on. Just a note, if you're using VirtualBox, please don't submit any reports with Share Hardware Configuration, the last thing we need is a hardware page full of virtual machines :) Menu, System, Share Hardware Configuration.

New Theme - We've adopted the popular Arc theme for several reasons. It looks great, it's regularly maintained, because it's a part of Lite Themes (see below) we can easily adapt it to our needs, there are three themes within, Arc, Arc-Dark and Arc-Darker so if you want the all out dark look, it's easy to select, and the theme is light. Firefox also carries the Arc theme in the aforementioned 3 options.

Lite Themes - A new package that incorporates, themes, icons, mouse themes and wallpapers. This allows us to easily deploy updates without using complex bash code. If other system packages make changes that affect our themes, we can quickly adapt with an updated package. There have been a number of theme enhancements since the Beta and we will continue to refine this theme based on your feedback in future updates.

Lite Upgrade - You'll now receive upgrades from within Series 3 automatically. Upgrades are a serious necessity in terms of security and bug fixes. If we add something you don't like, we'll make sure you can easily remove it. This has to be one of the most streamlined upgrades for any LTS distro.

New Boot Theme - Updated to new look, prompt to eject DVD or USB now appears at the end of the installation.

Less PPA's - Means faster Updates, and increased reliability. The Google saga experienced this year has proved to be a valuable lesson (see below). The only PPA's are for Gimp, Wine and Systemback - they have not let us down to date.

Google Software - Once burned, twice shy. The Google PPA issues this year has left a sour taste in my mouth. No Google products will appear in Lite Software for the entirety of Series 3. You can still get Chrome etc from the internet. A huge thank you to those who helped people who's Updates were not working. I know this has been a p.i.t.a. and I would like to recognize this community for assisting people with the Google fix. We'll look at reintroducing Google software in Lite Software in Series 4. Let's see how things pan out over time. Chromium is a more than capable Chrome replacement.

UEFI - Will not be supported in Series 3. People already know my position on this, we've had our discussions here on UEFI. We can still bring people to Linux Lite, with a little BIOS guidance. There are a lot of resources both in these Forums and in video tutorials in regard to working with UEFI in Linux Lite.

Kernels - All previous, current and future Linux Lite Kernels will be available throughout Series 2 & 3, 4 and so on...

Indicator Plugin - Is back. Volti shows promise, but is not ready for reliable deployment yet.

Numlock - Is enabled at the Login screen.

SystemD - You can manage services that start up in Linux Lite similar to the way you manage services that start up in Windows. We have packages for both 32bit and 64bit for SystemD Manager. This application was excluded from Linux Lite 3.0 to gauge public feedback first. To install SystemD Manager:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install systemd-manager -y
NOTE: Please be careful with this application. Only stop services that you know you don't need through the research you have done on that service. This application is suitable for experienced, power users only. Once installed, you can find SystemD Manager at:

Menu, System, Systemd Manager

Screenshot - Now has the ability to upload to our preferred image hoster, Imgur.

ISO size - Software grows in size, it happens with time. We will always look for ways to 'trim the fat'. At the moment, this is the best we can do.

Games Menu - Dropped in Series 3. Steam is now installable via Lite Software for both 32bit and 64bit. It made sense not to include gaming software in the Menu that only a few people would use. The majority of our users just want a basic Internet, Office and Multimedia operating system.

If you are writing the ISO to a USB on Linux, please use USB Creator:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install usb-creator-gtk
Login is automatic, no credentials required. The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-3.0-xxbit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

All Ubuntu 32bit kernels these days ship with PAE.

Minimum Recommended Specs:
700MHz processor
512mb ram
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

There is NO upgrade from Series 2 ( 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 ) to Series 3.

Known Issues:

- Wine. If Wine is installed, it takes control of all html files. For example, if you click on Menu, Favorites, Help Manual with Wine installed, Wine will attempt to open it and nothing will happen. To correct this, go to Menu, type in Mime, click on MIME Type Editor, search in the Filter for html, and change the drop down in text/html to Firefox or whatever your preferred browser is at the time.

LL 3.0 64 bit.

This must be the quickest and easiest installation I have ever done of any Linux distribution.

The installation was just flawless.

Congrats and thanks to Jerry and the Team for a fantastic job.

Donation sent.

LL #.0  can not be upgraded from 2.8.  It requires a full fresh install.  Remember to backup all your important data from 2.8 beforehand.

Hey Jerry, I don't see Linux Lite Control Center. Is there a way to install it from a repo?
Thanks!

I changed to the Arc-Dark theme but there is no Dark version of the Faenza Icons. When I try to install Faenza-Icon-Theme it says it can't install it because of the Faenza plain icons already installed.
How do I get the Faenza Dark icons to go with the Arc-Dark theme? The system tray icons will not show properly without it.

Thanks!

Nevermind, I figured it out :-)

I copied the dark versions form another distro and put them in the /usr/share/icons folder.
Worked like a charm, and no dependency issues.
Once that worked, I then added some other icons that I like, and all are showing fine in the Appearance menu.

Now if only I could find a way to install the Linux Lite Control Center!  :)

I don't really understand the removal of Lite Control Centre either, it was a well liked feature. Also the removal of the Games menu is a detriment to me, although it can be created manually it is a disappointment it's not there by default. Not too keen on the new login screen either, the old one was much better.
I'm sticking with 2.8 for now I think, although I may install 3.0 on a separate drive to try out. If I still don't like it I'm afraid it's back to distro hopping after 2.8 is no longer supported.

Same here. The Lite Control Center really made Linux Lite stand out from the rest.
I agree I think I will stick with 2.8, the changes in 3.0 aren't very significant and actually take it back a step.

Nice work Jerry & the Team.

Installed it to a 32GB USB stick, set it to download updates etc. during the install but it didn't do that for some reason.
Runs fast, should be good on a hard-drive install.
Couple of changes I've discovered so far, I can't reduce the number of recently used entries in Whisker to 0 anymore, 5 is the lowest.
I see it now uses the buttons from whatever theme is in use as backgrounds for the indicator plugin icons, but it still messes with the display of the panel behind that & the date/time plugin.
When copying files & the file operation progress box is shown I can't minimise the folder window to just show the copying progress box, it goes minimised too, only way to have it shown without the window up as well is close the window.
This only happens working on the volume LL3 is installed on, to or from another volume it works as expected, the window can be minimised & the progress box stays up.
Maximised or normal window makes no difference.

Just a few things I've noticed with it that's different to LL2.8.
Some of it I imagine would be XFCE stuff like the panel behind the indicators etc..
The progressbar/box behaviour I didn't see with the beta.

One the whole I think it's pretty impressive  8)

A little off-topic I guess but I think still relevant...sort of...with the install process (Something Else) I had to tell the installer not to reformat my existing system swap (by setting it to 'do not use') even though that was on a different partition to the blank USB I was installing to, in fact I've noticed that several times when doing a manual install of some distros.
If it's missed & the existing swap gets formatted it must set it to swapoff as I find the existing system shows 0 swap when that system is running again & it has to be set to swapon via G-Parted so swap gets used again.
That's something I've seen with LL & Mint installers & I think I saw it with Debian installer too when I was playing around with it a while ago.

New to LL here but because  i have to do many settings, (and i do not know how) i will stay with 2.8
3.0 looking good and running well .The 2.8 will do the work for me even if i do not get any more updates .i run it only for ham-radio programs any way.
To the team i will say this.
Keep up the good work
thanks

Kernels - All previous, current and future Linux Lite Kernels will be available throughout Series 2 & 3, 4 and so on...

First of all I have to say a big thank you for all the work that has gone in to LL over the years. I've found it to be stable and utterly reliable.

Trying out various 16.04 distros over the past few months has shown up a major block for using linux into the future on my HP laptop. All kernels after 3.19 send my cpu fan into 100% speed all the time no matter what the linux version. So seeing the line about previous kernels being available I just wanted to double check that it does mean just that - so I should be able to install a 3.13 kernel on LL 3.0? If so then that makes me a very happy bunny :)

One question though - Loving the new release by the way! Volti I didn't really care for though. I think the stock volume control is perfect.

Where is the Lite Control Center? Granted I never really used it much, but it did tell some computer spec info that I did find useful, and easily telling whether the distro was 32-bit or 64-bit, besides going into the terminal with "uname -a" command, something I needed to identify when the Google Chrome 32-bit PPA removal came about when helping out one of my personal friends. It apparently isn't included anymore... That was a great tool, please bring it back. I'm probably the 3rd or 4th person who's mentioned this, so this tool is definitely in "high demand" for your user base...

There is one theme inconsistency I have noticed. Very far from a major issue:

On the "Indicator Plug-in" icons on the XFCE panel, the icons are really rather dark, and haven't found a way to make the icons have white colors for easy glancing. Besides nit-picking about this little annoyance, the Arc theme looks beautiful, and the new Wallpapers are lovely. Funny how you included the new Lamborghini Huracan sports car in one of them!  Definitely a night and day difference compared to the previous series, and reminds me of Manjaro XFCE a little with a blue theme instead of green. Theme integration in this release is very good as or almost as good as OpenSUSE KDE custom theming.

I don't want to be overly critical or nit-picky with my opinions because I do realize that LL is a project done in spare time and commitment. We are all human beings, we all make mistakes, miss, forget and overlook things. Little annoyances like the one mentioned above are easily fixed with a Google (or DuckDuckGo if you prefer) search and tutorial rundown.

Overall Great Release! Love what Jerry and the LL team put out for the community. What an amazing creation this has come to be in 4 years later!

Not possible at the moment sorry TMG1961. Those My Computer entries require foreign translations in the code.

You can hand edit the code yourself if you are keen. If you're on 64bit, show hidden files in your home folder, go to .local/share/applications and edit:

alacarte-made-3.desktop
alacarte-made-4.desktop
alacarte-made-5.desktop
alacarte-made-6.desktop
alacarte-made-7.desktop
alacarte-made-8.desktop
alacarte-made-9.desktop
alacarte-made-10.desktop
alacarte-made-11.desktop

Under the line that says "Comment=Browse your Home folder" (or whatever it says)
make another line under it and put in "Comment[nl]=Blader door uw thuismap" (if thats right?)

Do these edits for both the 'Name' and 'Comment' lines.

example:

Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Comment=Browse your Home folder
Comment[nl]=Blader door uw thuismap
Terminal=false
Name=Home
Name=[nl]Huis
Exec=exo-open --launch FileManager %u
Type=Application
Icon=user-home

Logout/in or reboot to see the changes.

Do that for each file. If you'd like to provide the Dutch translations for each file, I'd be happy to add them to the next version of Linux Lite :)

Edit: I just also noticed that when i cut/paste a file from Desktop to Downloads, Documents or Public then after pasting the folder closes. It doesnt happen between any other folders.

Re. Thunar bug, try this please TMG1961:

Open Thunar
Go to Edit, Preferences
On Display tab, check then uncheck 'Show file size in binary format' at least one time.

Now do what you did before - cut/paste a file from Desktop to Downloads, Documents or Public to see if you get the folder crash again.

Installed very easily and working well on my 3rd laptop (i3 4mb memory)
Starts up faster than the interminable wait on 2.8 and seems snappier

I have added Slimjet to replace Chrome and did the work-around needed to install Google Earth on 16.04 based linux

http://blog.pztop.com/2016/04/28/Install-Google-Earth-on-Ubuntu-16-04/

I am likely to be using slimjet or chromium more than before since the Arc Theme has parasited Firefox and made the tabs black and so unreadable

Apart from being quicker to load 3.0 seems to have fewer features than 2.8 so I will stick with that on my main machine

Thanks for all your work. Lite remains the best and most user friendly Linux distro

Jerry,  the 3 Com card worked on LL2.0 32 standard Kernel.    Upgrades through the LL2 version again without problems.  At 2.8 started to play with Kernels .Reason for then  updating to  Kernel to 4.0  and then later to 4.5.0 was really to see where the " Break" point was - future proofing this 2003 machine.

Hence surprised that LL3.0 appears to have a problem??  Certainly on Live DVD anyway.  Use this old A10 as my email back up (work) and therefore reluctant to do clean install unless confident that wifi card will work straight off.

Next machine  to upgrade (32 bit)  will be the work desktop which is LAN connected but will only do that when I have mastered the Google Earth work around.  GE integral part of work tasks.

@newtusmaximus, looks like those drivers were dropped in 16.04 You can get the driver from here - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694350 and install it after you've installed 3.0 Better still, I would try this first - look in /lib/firmware in 2.8 and copy the following highlighted files (all starting with 'isl') to a USB:

Then copy them into your installed 3.0 in /lib/firmware, and reboot (make sure the files are owned by root).
That should work :)

Trying to install on my laptop (with a brand new SSD).  I checked auto login but now it wants me to log in.  No problem.  I get a login screen that has "Other" at the top (with a drop down menu type arrow that does nothing), a place for my user name then a place for my password.  When I enter my pass word I get "Incorrect password, please try again".  I KNOW I'm entering the correct password.  I've even tried to re-install LL 3.0 (just to make sure I got the right pass word) and it still won't take it.

What could I be doing wrong?

I must have been dreaming earlier when I thought I could minimise the File Operation Progress box on LL 3.0 by copying to or from another volume other than the system one.
Which means the info I posted earlier isn't correct, my apologies  :-[
I guess I had the window/s closed as it will minimise via the panel button when the windows are closed, but it won't otherwise no matter what the source or destination.
The minimise option/button has been removed.

In LL 2.8 it's got a minimise button.

But in LL 3.0 it's missing & the right click option to minimise from the panel button is greyed out.

On my setup (MSI L1350D Notebook) LL 3.0 boots faster from a USB install than my 2.8 does from the hard drive, I'm finding it runs faster than Knoppix 7.6 that's installed on an indentical USB stick, which I think is quite an achievement as nothing I've installed to USB has gone anywhere near Knoppix in speed until now....sweet  8)

Congrats to everyone involved! LL3 is another fine release.

One issue that I did run into was during installation. I left my laptop for a short time and when I came back the screen had gone black (screensaver?). After touching a key I was presented with the login screen. I didn't know the default live system credentials so I waited a bit until I was sure the installation was complete. Is there any way to disable to screensaver logout during installation?

This may have been a change in Xfce 4.12 which LL3 is now using. I believe you can hide the window by clicking on the folder icon in the notification area. Not sure why they hid the minimize button in the transfer dialog though...seems odd.

I tried that but I think I used a lowercase L since most distros don't capitalize the usernames. I could have figured it out if I dropped to tty but this seemed like it might be an issue for new users to Linux in general.

Monkeyman,

My laptop doesn't have a physical number pad either, but it does have a virtual number pad.  By that I mean, some of the lettered keys become a number pad if I hold down the Fn key, like what's seen here (https://www.amazon.com/E5430-E6420-E6430-layout-Keyboard/dp/B00D3ZW638?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0).  In my example, keys for J, K, L, U, I, O, and P can also be keys for numbers when using the Fn key in the bottom left.  If you have something like this as well, when you try to enter letters that share a key with a number, that could affect the input of your password.

I think my first post above was a bit mealy-mouthed.
I was able to install LL 3.0 as a fresh install very rapidly and it worked out of the box.
Some previous problems with Broadband drivers and language support seem to have been ironed out and the only minor niggle is that I chose 'automatic login' but the password is still required.

I was able to add software including Slimjet and Google Earth as noted above, but this was greatly eased by the intelligent selection in Lite Software which together with that which is provided as basic gives the best offer of any distro.

I sorted my FF problem and I have a fully functioning crisp new system very quickly achieved
Thanks to the team again

Thanks Mike, that allows me to do what I want, I like to see the progress with the windows being open but minimised at different times.

I've seen your blank screen issue a couple of times, what I do now is when booted into the live media before starting the install process I go into the Power Manager settings, Security tab & change Automatically lock the session to Never.
It holds that setting until a shutdown/reboot etc. & the screen stays on if left unattended for a while.

32-bit for me, I've also pinched some drive space from my 2.8 install & installed 3.0 to the hard drive instead of running from a USB install.

Tried that red theme (mod of SCOUT039) and a few others Jerry, all the same with no minimise.
It appears what Mike mentioned previously is correct it's been changed in XFCE.
And his solution of clicking the file icon in the notification area effectively does the same job, it allows for showing/hiding of the progress box without being tied to the window's state.

Something else I noticed is when 2 or more windows & the progress box are up, clicking between the windows on the panel buttons changes the focus window and the progress box's colours change to 'background' but it stays in front & doesn't go behind the focused window like I guess it probably should.
The setting 'Always on Top' is useable on the progress box's panel button but has no effect either way.

I'm guessing, because the file start with the word 'From' the system assumes its an email mimetype and assigns it an envelope icon. I don't see this as an issue that needs fixing, albeit interesting :) Take out 'From' in the first line and its fine.

I did, and as soon as you save it the icon changes. Good to know not to start with From / in a text file. But you can type from / and notting happens.

Think I might have found a minor bug with the Desktop's right click > Application menu entry.
I have an application menu on the Panel, if I go into it's properties & edit anything in that menu, move something up or down etc., close the properties, then on the Desktop right click > Applications, instead of the menu appearing just a small rectangle appears.
Fix it by going Right-click > Desktop Settings > Menus then uncheck & recheck the 'Include applications menu on desktop right click' button, once that's done it works as it should.

Using Transmission I found it impossible to get it's port check to pass & show open until I changed the IPV4 settings in the Network Connections.
Edited the connection settings and changed it from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual, entered the relevant info, saved and all is well.
It's a wired Ethernet connection on a TP-LINK TD-8840T ADSL2+ Modem Router.

Migrating settings/profiles manually from 2.8 works well by simply replacing the files in the relevant folders on 3.0 with the ones from 2.8.
Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC & Transmission all ok with the only issue found being the Transmission connection glitch and that was unrelated as I tried a clean/fresh Transmission install before editing the network connection.

Desktop icons, I never tried this on the LL 3.0 beta, but noticed on LL 3.0 Final I'm seeing the icons jump left issue again.
This time I don't believe it's a bug, it appears to be just how XFCE works.
It's only with removable volume icons for external devices, and only when they're powered down when shutting down the system completely or restarting.
Internal removable volume icons and any other icons on the Desktop stay where they're put on a shutdown/restart.
On a logout/login they stay where they're supposed to, mounted or unmounted, powered on or powered off.
Shutdown or restart if they're powered off before shutting down they go back to the top left when they're mounted again next time LL 3.0 starts.
If they're mounted or unmounted but still powered on when shutting down they retain their positions ok.
sudo chattr +i ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons* keeps them in place after a shutdown regardless of mounted/unmounted, powered on/powered off status.

Just thinking out loud here below so might be incorrect info....
I was hoping I wouldn't have to keep doing that chattr command but I guess there's probably not much that can be done about it for now.
XFCE is probably doing correctly exactly what it's supposed to when shutting down & saving the Desktop state.
As the powered down external drive's icons aren't showing at that time they're not getting saved in the config file.
If they're still mounted or powered on the icons are still visible and they do get saved, which I guess would be why I see them holding their positions at those times.
I guess it must do things differently with regards to saving Desktop state on a logout vs a shutdown.
Or maybe it's the greeter & not XFCE at all....makes one's head hurt all this stuff  :-\    ;D

No problems here. Just finished installing 3.0 64bit.
Bluetooth keyboard works.

So far I installed and checked the following applications:
- Geany,
- Lazarus IDE,
- Eclipse,
- Sqliteman,
- MineCraft,
- Steam,
- Palemoon browser (I don't like Firefox, has google crap installed),
- OpenShot,
- Lighttpd,
- PHP5 (with GD, Sqlite3 and cli),
- Wine.

No problems so far, just like 2.8, it simply works.

Like the default theme!

Why would I do that when I am asking a question about 3.0?  :)

No problems here. Just finished installing 3.0 64bit.
Bluetooth keyboard works.

So far I installed and checked the following applications:
- Geany,
- Lazarus IDE,
- Eclipse,
- Sqliteman,
- MineCraft,
- Steam,
- Palemoon browser (I don't like Firefox, has google crap installed),
- OpenShot,
- Lighttpd,
- PHP5 (with GD, Sqlite3 and cli),
- Wine.

No problems so far, just like 2.8, it simply works.

Like the default theme!

Thanks SmartDuck :)

Just noticed a wee glitch. .deb files want to open with Archive Manager. Menu, (type in  'Mime') Mime type editor, then type in deb in the filter box, and select Gdebi from the dropdown box. Will be fixed in 3.2

Testing 3.0 on DVD to see if I want to up grade yet. My favorite theme, BleuFear, does not change Synaptic. Not sure about any other app. Tried DeLorean, and a few other dark themes and they also did not change Synaptic. Don't really like the blue gray of Arc-Dark. I prefer the flat gray of BleuFear. Anybody know why BleuFear not working everywhere?

I've noticed some theme differences too, I think it's something to do with the differences between Gtk2+ & Gtk3+. (https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1x6lce/eli5_what_are_the_prime_differences_between_gtk2/)
The bottom 2 paragraphs of the 1st reply on that page I think eludes to why some themes work correctly and others don't.
For me Synaptic didn't change themes until after a reboot, VLC didn't until I set Force Window Style to Gtk+.
One I've found that won't change is Unetbootin, it does with the default themes but not with the older themes I  like using.
Those 3 changed soon as applied in 2.8.
Some of the older themes don't even show up in Appearance now, I'm guessing that's because they have no Gtk3+ elements/folder included.

At the moment I'm looking for a way to integrate clearer icons against dark backgrounds like the tray:

I'll let folks know when this is ready.

There is also an updated package for SystemD Manager.

Lite Themes package updated. Run Install Updates to get it. This change brings better contrasting icons in the tray.

Once the update is complete, go to Menu, Settings, Appearance, Icons tab, and select Faenza-Dark. This changes a few other icons like the Log Out icon on the Menu, but leaves the majority of the existing icons unchanged, ensuring continuity.

Another update to Lite Themes.

There is now more continuity across the theme.

Before Firefox menus were white, they're now blue.
Before LibreOffice menus were white, they're now blue.
Before Thunderbird menus were white, they're now blue.
Before Firewall menus were white, they're now blue.

And importantly, tray icon menus are now all blue too.

Things will continue to improve :)

... Also the removal of the Games menu is a detriment to me, although it can be created manually it is a disappointment it's not there by default. ...

When you install games of your choice via Synaptic (and probably by Lite Software), the Whisker menu automatically creates a games folder. I like the graphics on KMahjongg and  KPatience better than the Gnome versions. Also I don't want Steam. Therefore, no installed games or folder is not a problem for me and I don't have to uninstall the stuff in games that were in versions before 3.0.

Don't want them blue. They need to be white against whatever the panel color is. To have blue blocks like that doesn't look right.
Are the blue blocks optional?

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like the blue block appears when you highlight an indicator to see its options.  It also appears that when you switch the icons from Faenza to Faenza Dark, you'll get lighter colored indicators on the dark panel.

Clean 32-bit install, once installed & started close the Welcome Screen & open Synaptic before running updates & it appears everything is marked for upgrade no matter what is selected on the left menu.
I never thought to screenshot it but it said something like 1500 installed, 1500 to upgrade down the bottom left & all the entry's checkboxes were green & 'unmark' was the only option available if they were clicked on.
Close Synaptic, run updates & all is ok in Synaptic then, it can be used as normal.

Most people will probably follow the Welcome Screen's advice & update first but I guess it could cause someone a whole lotta grief if they follow through with Apply etc.....

I think the blue Jerry has added in the theme update is the 'prelight' (mouse moving over but not clicked) colour for the menu, before the change with the default theme this was white, when the white menu was open the prelight was also white & you couldn't see where the pointer would be selecting if it was clicked.
Now it's blue, easy to see & the icon only changes to blue as it's clicked, the icon appears to keep it's original prelight colour & goes back to it's original background colour once the mouse is away from it.

32-bit, with Whisker menu & an application menu on the panel.
If I edit the application menu's properties, move things up, down, add or delete items, separators or check / uncheck items etc. the same changes happen in the Whisker menu.
I guess it's an XFCE thing, not really what I'd call user friendly to rectify as in the end it was a case of delete the panel & start again.

I thought any changes made in the app menu probably should be separate from the Whisker menu but apparently not, LOL.
Opened Whisker to discover it had about 2 items left total  :o    ;D

A little more on Synaptic now I've done a couple more fresh installs, I got it wrong again, sorry.
Synaptic is unusable until the package info is reloaded for the first time, then the 'All' menu appears.
Before that reload it only shows what's installed on the system which is why everything is checked green.
Makes no difference if the initial update is done or not.

Following the logic of adding Faenza Dark icons, if not now, then by LL 3.2, the terminal background should be basic black.  As Joe Collins mentioned in his YouTube review of Linux Lite 3.0, the default dark gray background makes it really hard to read Resource Usage (aka htop) or other things with colored text.  And the Linux Lite target audience, Windows user, is used to seeing that in a Windows command prompt.  A basic black background.  Even the default off-white or gray foreground lettering looks much better (or at least much easier to see) when the background is completely black.

So I've installed 3.0 32-bit to my mini.. Again LL has come through, its still in its infancy but its good..
I find that I may prefer 2.8 just a hair more but this isn't due to anything in LL3.0 - more so 16.04 and the fact I installed a new a drive and the getting back to previous state is par for the course..
But a couple things I came across...

More so app and hardware vs. bugs... So as mentioned this isn't due to LL3.0 but will work in LL3.0 ..

VPN - Anyconnect
Problem: Cannot be set up in the GUI/Nework Manager
Workaround: Use CLI to initiate the connection
Code: [Select]
sudo openconnect https://<remote.host.here> Enter VPN server in place of <remote.host.here>
Follow prompts for GroupID, UserID and Password

http://askubuntu.com/questions/760864/no-more-anyconnect-compatible-vpn-transport-in-ubuntu-16-04

WiFI - RTL8192cu
Problem: Slower speeds and disconnects
Fix: Updated Driver
Disconnect WiFi, connect with ethernet - then the below commands 1 at a time..
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential dkms git
git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes
sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.10
sudo depmod -a
sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/blacklist-native-rtl8192.conf /etc/modprobe.d/
sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/8192cu-disable-power-management.conf /etc/modprobe.d/
then reboot

As described: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/reserve-7

Pointer disappears after hibernate/suspend.
Workaround.. CTRL+ALT+F1 then CTRL+ALT+F7
As pointed out by neptune33 - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other/ll-3-0-restart-button-add-printer-problems-mouse-cursor/msg23851/#msg23851

Conky (1.10):
Problems: Items not working the same as previously in 2.8 (conky 1.9)
Fix: Conky was updated to 1.10, googled and several threads discuss.. I rolled back to 1.9 as I just wanted it to work for the time being.. May revisit

If already installed - remove
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge conky-std && sudo apt-get autoremove
Then... *Note version required (64bit or 32bit) for 32 I used xxxx_i386.deb
Code: [Select]
w get http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/conky/conky-std_1.9.0-4_amd64.deb Remove the space from w get

Again replace with xxxx_i386.deb
Code: [Select]
sudo gdebi conky-std_1.9.0-4_amd64.deb
Finally so it doesn't get updated:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold conky-std
As discussed http://coreygoldberg.blogspot.com/2016/03/what-heck-happened-to-conky-im-rolling-back.html

You are very welcome Len. I rely on sensible solutions from the community, and you have made a number of excellent ones :)

Please be aware though that not everyones requests will be granted. I have read your concerns regarding The Control Center in LL 3.0 and UEFI. On UEFI, I have publicly stated why this won't be included, until my hand is forced by big brother, this will not occur. I know this disappoints you and others, I am acutely aware of this. I don't always do things because they are popular or convenient. Control Center in LL 3.0, I know this is something close to your heart, and myself and the devs always love it when folks believe in and enjoy software that we provide, but you should be aware that there are always 2 sides to any situation and or discussion. I have moved on from this, and am purely focused on the future of Linux Lite, and what we can do to show existing Windows users there are safe, easy to use alternatives.

Cheers Len :)

File association, install WINE & double click an .exe to run or install something & it opens with Archive Manager.
Checking 'make executable' didn't help.
Has to be changed via Properties > Opens With to the WINE program loader.
Might be a little confusing for new users, had me stumped for half a minute as the archive manager window doesn't say archive manager anywhere, it just says 'filename.exe' in the title bar.

UPDATE 3com PCMIA card wifi {3CRWE154G72)  not recognised in LL3.0 32 bit . SOLVED
ACTION under ROOT.

Anyone had any luck getting the Oxygen mouse/cursor theme to work correctly?
It's almost like half of it's missing as with some functions like resize & drag it switches back to the default.
On a restart during the login process when it's showing busy it switches between Oxygen & default, then when on the desktop it's back to default.
Open Firefox or Thunderbird etc. & it's Oxygen inside their window area but default down on the panel & desktop area outside their windows.
DMZ's & several others I've tried all behave as expected but any in the Oxygen series don't work correcty.
Never had that happen on 2.8
Installed it & the extra colours via Synaptic, tried completely removing, reinstalling etc...

I have now installed LL 3.0 on three different machines, tow laptops and one PC.

I installed on the first, did all my personal tweaks such as themes, installing control centre and slimjet etc,  and used Systemback to make a Live USB.

I have then been able to install a clone of my system with all my preferences on the other two computers.

I have never had less trouble installing nor less hassle after since there was no tweaking to do.

First rate system which is now my main one ;D

When viewing video files in both VLC & SMPlayer now it appears the default behaviour has changed when opening another file in the 'choose file' menu from the same folder.
Can no longer select the next file from the menu with the keyboard.
Previously with LL 2.8 & earlier, if one file had finished Ctrl+O would open the menu & the previously played file would be highlighted, could use the down or up arrows to move the selection to the desired file then hit Enter & it'd start.
Now it does nothing in SMPlayer & only toggles between previously played files in the same session/folder with VLC, can't move it to the next file in the menu to start it playing, it has to be clicked with the cursor.

Is there a way around this or a way to set it how it was with 2.8?

Still having mouse cursor theme issues, no matter what theme is set, it always returns to the default theme on a restart.
Not sure what's triggered it as I only changed from the default mouse cursor theme a few days ago & since then it always goes back to the default.
When starting up, after I enter my password & the splash comes up, set to Simple with sans bold 12 font, it'll show the default busy cursor for a second or two, then it'll switch to the busy cursor of the theme I have set for about a second, then it switches back to the default & stays there, all the pointers are then at default until I go into settings & click to change it away from the theme I've chosen, then click the desired theme again.
When I open Menu > Settings > Mouse & Touchpad > Theme it always has the one I've chosen previously highlighted but it's displaying the default theme's cursors instead.
Clicking another theme it instantly changes to the new one & will stay on that theme all working properly until the next reboot when it misbehaves again.
Title: Re: Linux Lite 3.0 Final Released
Post by: JmaCWQ on June 10, 2016, 01:09:49 AM
Fresh install cured the mouse cursor issue, I have no idea what triggered it in the first place, something I installed must have messed with things I guess.

Found a sort-of workaround for the selection of the next file with the keyboard in the media player's 'choose menu'.
Ctrl+O brings up the menu, it now has a 'Filename:' text box, type the first letter (case sensitive) of the filename sequence & it expands and can be navigated up/down with the keyboard arrows.
So if all the files are named Holiday-1, Holiday-2, Holiday-3 etc. etc., hit Shift+H on the keyboard then use the up/down arrows to scroll, or if the files start with a number or lowercase letter just hit the number or lowercase letter on the keyboard.
If files in the folder are named differently like Holiday-1, Holiday-2, Overseas-1, Overseas-2 etc. then only the ones that start with H can be scrolled through until the first letter of the different filenames is entered in the text box.
Which means if there's many different filenames in a folder a lot of extra keystrokes are required just to open them from the keyboard instead of simply hitting once the down-arrow after one file has completed to view the next.

Seems this is becoming standard as I noticed it with Mint 17.3 KDE version also.
Not sure what the logic behind making that change is, I can't find anything in any release notes about it anywhere, but it seems to me that a changing of something that worked fine & was easy to use into something that now involves either clicking with the mouse or a lot more extra steps via a keyboard is a step in the wrong direction.

Any interface or interaction changes from 2.8 - 3.0 are not done by us unless we specify that in the Release Announcement. It's more than likely software that has not been coded by us eg. XFCE.

Thanks Jerry,
Yeah I understand it's not an LL thing, just having a grizzle I guess  ;D
I found that simple, user friendly function very useful when using a lot of media files, and I know others did too as I've been hearing a few opinions on it.
I've searched through all release notes I can find & didn't see anything of relevance though it might be named or referred to as something I don't understand.
It's possible there's some better future implimentation planned that those changes are required as a part of, time will tell I guess.

File manager preferences on the advanced tab under Folder Permissions, the setting Apply to Folder and Contents doesn't seem to work.
Copy some folders with files inside from a cd or dvd, once copying has finished right click on one & go Properties > Permissions change all to Read and Write, click close, open the folder and the contents are still read-only & must also be changed manually.
The file manager preferences window cannot be minimised out of the way but is also tied to the window being shown or hidden, same behaviour as the copy files progress box.

Hi

have just installed 64 bit 3.0

some minor issues for next release?

At shutdown screen you have a mainly yelllow splash with white font.....not easy to read please consider using black font so I can read the message that paraphrased was press enter after removing disc.

2)  the squashfs appears to have some errors in it.  My original download was from an aussie mirror then I dl from another country but in all cases the message screen shows

Maybe others can press the Escape key to booting up the live DVD to confirm?

Checking the install structure I can see the error
Code: [Select]
root@asus:/home/gordon# cd /root/var/crash
bash: cd: /root/var/crash: No such file or directory

I have not checked for the other error for the openssl certificate. I will look at gpg later.

thanks for reading

Hi;
Several times I read "Fewer PPA's'.
I have searched over half a dozen online Linux acronym directories to no avail.

TIA Eike
