Title: Linux Lite 2.8 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on January 31, 2016, 05:35:11 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.8 Final is now available for download. The star of this release is the inclusion of the Hardware Enablement Stack 3.19 based Kernel offering greater hardware support. We've also included a host of new features including, BTRFS support during install, the Help Manual is now accessible from the Desktop, Hulu now works out of the box, and the usual compliment of community suggestions and bug fixes.

During this development cycle, the open source software community lost a pioneering visionary. Linux Lite dedicates this release in honor, and to the memory of Ian Murdock, founder of Debian.

New Thunar Media Tags Plugin.
Hulu now works out of the box - Thanks tomt

Fixed bug where Blueman applet was storing files in /etc/skel - Thanks vaikus84

As this is the last build of Linux Lite in the 2.0 series, we wanted to finish off with a balance of great hardware support with kernel 3.19, whilst maintaining our renown stability.

Developer credits - Jerry Bezencon, Milos Pavlovic, John Jenkins, Brian Tomlinson, Josh Erickson, gerito1.

Upgrading from 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 using the instructions further down will take care of this.

Upgrading to Linux Lite 2.8 - There will be no Hardware Enablement Stack 3.19 Kernel installed when you perform Lite Upgrade. This has the potential to do more harm than good. People who have perfectly functioning systems, can suddenly find themselves with hardware that doesn't work anymore due to driver issues. It's been decided to let people make their own decision whether or not to install this hardware stack. Stability over risk.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

Upgrading:

For those on Linux Lite 2.4, 2.6 do the following:

1) Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.
2) Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade.
3) Follow the onscreen instructions, reboot when finished.

For those on versions of Linux Lite 2.0, 2.2 only, do the following:

Open a terminal and do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series2 -y
2) Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade.
3) Follow the onscreen instructions, reboot when finished.

You cannot upgrade from Linux Lite 1.0.0, 1.0.2, 1.0.4, 1.0.6, 1.0.8

The following command will upgrade you to the 3.19 kernel. You do this at your own risk. I recommend you stay on your current kernel, but of course there will be people who can't resist to tinker  :)

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid

1st: Favorties>Install Updates
Let it finish
2nd: System>Lite Upgrade
Let it finish

I picked shutdown. Then power up manually instead of reboot.

Code: [Select]
harry@biker1:~$ cat /etc/llver
Linux Lite 2.8

smooth as silk. Thanks.

Edit: forgot to show my kernel

Code: [Select]
harry@biker1:~$ uname -r
4.2.0-linuxlite

So no need for the 3.19 for me.

Did the Upgrade to 2.8. All went well. Currently contemplating if installing the hardware enablement stack would bring any advantage. But I think it won't do much of a difference.

Thanks for the upgrade, Jerry!  My 64-bit upgrade was very smooth.  After my update I started the upgrade and had breakfast.  When I returned, the maching was ready for a reboot.

The 32-bit upgrade on my Gateway LT40 Notebook was not as smooth.  I had screwed up my package list and it didn't have the LL respository in it.  After I rectified the situation I updated and then upgraded to LL 2.8 without any issues.

I'm pretty sure both my machines could handle the kernel upgrade, but I'm going to hold off for now.

Cheers,
Andy N1KSN

Thank you, Jerry!

Both 32 and 64 bit installs went smooth as silk today. My wife, who is currently working on her Masters degree in Psychology, noticed how snappy your system was this morning and had me replace Mint Cinnamon w/ Linux Lite 2.8...  She thanks you as well!

32 bit on both my netbooks runs wonderfully but where I've really noticed a difference is upon my 64 bit Lenovo laptop. Where it was fast before, it simply screams with the fresh install of 2.8 now.

We sincerely appreciate all your efforts!

Nice Job ;)

Tks to all.   A10 Standard Upgrade ran smoothly after I had sorted 2.6 update problem - latter due to some broken dependencies which Synaptics fixed.

2003 Toshiba Sat Pro A10  1 GB Ram with PCMIA wifi card.  Will so the rest over the next few days
2007 Fujitsu Siemens  Amilo Si1520 2GB RAM  Standard 32 bit upgrade from LL2.6  smooth as silk .
2005 Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V3405 2 GB RAM Standard 32 bit upgrade from LL2.4 - Again smooth :)
2007 HP DC7700 small form factor desktop 3 GB RAM Standard 32 bit upgrade from LL2.6 - Again smooth :)

All full install to HDD/ not dual boot.

Which kernel version does 2.8 run? Is it easy to upgrade to a later version without breaking LL?
Title: Re: Linux Lite 2.8 Final Released
Post by: torreydale on February 01, 2016, 10:34:21 AM
As per the release announcement, a new install of LL 2.8 will carry Linux kernel version 3.19.  If you already have LL 2.6, your kernel will not be updated to that.  Newer kernels adopt drivers for newer hardware and dump drivers for older hardware.  So upgrading for upgrading's sake could possibly cause some things not to work.  That's why the development team opted not to include the kernel upgrade in the upgrade package.

It is easy to upgrade from version 2.6 to 2.8.  You just need to run the Install Updates utility and then run Lite Upgrade.  Follow the instructions and reboot afterwards.  As an extra layer of precaution, I created a Systemback restore point before and after running Lite Upgrade.

Have updated to 2.8 with no obvious problems so far.
I am on the 4.3 kernel

Update to 2.8 and donated again.  ;D

How long will 2.8 be supported? Acording tohttp://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack#Kernel.2BAC8-Support.A14.04.x_Ubuntu_Kernel_Support (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack#Kernel.2BAC8-Support.A14.04.x_Ubuntu_Kernel_Support) it looks like this kernel will only be supported to August 2016. Does this mean 2.8 will only be supported to August 2016 and 3.0 must be installed for support?  :-\

@Coastie, 3.19 Kernel on 2.8 is supported until August, the rest of the 2.8 system is supported for the usual lifespan of an LTS, 5 years from the initial 14.04 release. Then in August 2016 you can upgrade to the Xenial HWE and get continued support for the lifespan of the LTS :)

Thanks for that little bit of information to tell me the version. Which it says is 2.2 v.
So no I guess then it is not updated.
Thanks Jerry.

I am so happy with this version of LL that I am hesitant on switching to the latest version. I am in a true quandary, Yes Or No... Hmm
And BTW... I have a Dell 755 Opitplex that this is on. It is currently at Intel duo core E4400 2.0 ghz. With 5 gb of physical ram. I have looked up online and I am not sure but I think I can get a quad core CPU and upgrade it. But I am not sure. What do you think?

Hey Jerry.

Ok So I just did the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.8 on my Laptop. Acer Aspire 3000 w/AMD Mobile Sempron 3100 Processor.
I must say that it was the easiest upgrade for an Operating System I have EVER done. I was very very pleasantly surprised.
I have done a lot of upgrading (at least in the recent 5 years or more that I have been using Linux, and 15+ years using windows including Win 3.0) and this one is the best one by far I have ever done.

Congratulations on a very well done OS, Linux Lite should be giving Windows a run for the fair share of users. Many many thanks to you and the Team.

@ohjrson thanks. Before we build an app, we think for a long time before the first line is ever coded, "how can we make this light, efficient and fast." This will get even better with time. We are Borg.

:-\ I am confused as usual. I though once you completed upgrading the 2 series which ends at 2.8, you had to reinstall to move to 3.0. Are you saying you can upgrade to 3.0 from 2.8 or is there a way to just upgrade the kernel?

I can reinstall but it takes time to install extra programs, themes, icons, desktop, etc.

To Coastie,

You definitely cannot do an in place upgrade from LL2.8 to LL3.0.  A reinstall will be in order then.

You will need to upgrade to the HWE kernel available in Aug 2016.  Whether that will come via Install Updates for you or whether you'll have to manually update it via Install/Remove Software, I do not know.

For your concern of reinstalling programs, you might want to investigate the program called Aptik.  It may help some in that regard.  It can save settings, themes, programs list, PPAs, etc.  Of course going to a different Ubuntu LTS base may cause some of the PPAs not to work.  But I imagine the programs as part of the repository should work, and that can save you some time with your reinstall.  That's what I'm planning to do.

Here's to Ubuntu one day having a rolling release.

Thanks, torreydale. I guess I will just do a clean install too.

What would be helpful would be a terminal command or program that would list all my programs that I could print. I could check to see what is already installed in 3.0 and what I would need to install. I have an old list that I haven't updated recently. I could keep opening the menu to all then add to compare to list but of course the menu would keep closing. There should be an easier way.

Try out

Code: [Select]
apt list --installed
Then copy and paste terminal readout into a text file. Then print out the text file as a hard copy or copy to usb.

Code: [Select]
man apt
reveals all.

"Software I have installed, Rather than is installed"

You can install another app/package, APTIK (http://www.teejeetech.in/p/aptik.html)
There is an option for Backup & Restore Software Selections list.
it excludes default distro package, so you back just your own list, and restore that list.(NOT the actual packages)

It would be nice to have such a feature like that in Lite Control Centre / Software

Thanks rokytnji and Wirezfree. "apt list --installed" gave me too much info. I am not sure what I got with "man apt."  :-[

"APTIK" looks like what I need. I think I will just use it for making the list. I am not sure I will trust it to reinstall. I'll just use Lite Software or Synaptic or copy and paste into the terminal for that.

I have a question, when LL 3.0 does release would this version be too much for a netbook?
Right now I'm using v1.0.6 and it's perfect and fast but I really want to try out v3.0 when it comes out.
My netbook is a Toshiba N245 1.66ghz intel atom CPU.  / 2GB RAM / 360GB SSD

Thank you.

I can't speak for version 3.0, but I can tell you that 2.8 runs very well on this old netbook, it runs an intel atom n270 processor @ 1.6ghz and only has 1GB of ram. Your specs are better, so I don't think you would have any trouble running a newer version. I would not expect the developers to radically change the minimum system requirements. Just my opinion. :)

Definitely would be a great feature to have !

Thank you so much :)

Thank you.

That is difficult to predict, June is still a while off. Download the image and try it live, then you'll know for sure.

Hello!

I just tried to upgrade to 2.8 by installing the upgrade script via terminal ("Lite Upgrade"). If I execute the "Lite Upgrade" I get a "Upgrade Cancelled" window. How can I upgrade?

Thanks!

Sorry, my fault. I have 1.0.6 on my laptop.  ::) What's the easiest way to upgrade from 1.x to 2.x without losing settings, files and stuff?

Hi MadMax

I believe this answer to your question is you cannot upgrade from 1.0.6 to the LL 2.x series.

Here's the part of the 2.8 release anouncement (the first post in this thread) that I'm referring to:

Code: [Select]

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series2 -y

2) Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade.
3) Follow the onscreen instructions, reboot when finished.

You cannot upgrade from Linux Lite 1.0.0, 1.0.2, 1.0.4, 1.0.6, 1.0.8

To be safe:

Backup your important personal files onto either a separate partition or a USB stick (Note: this is not needed if you set up your system with a separate soft-linked DATA partition as an update should not touch this).

To keep your program settings: backup your hidden files from your home directory to a separate partition or a USB stick. Be aware, however, that newer versions of some programs might have changed their settings options and your old settings might not work with the newer versions!!

For things like custom fonts, themes, icons, etc: you need to back them up as well to be on the safe side.

As far as your "stuff" goes -- that's your choice.  ;D

Have fun,

Little Walter

I already posted an introduction but I just wanted to add my thanks here.

I've been trying LL off and on over the last few releases and I really wanted to stick with it because it's been one of my favorite distros.  With 2.8 I think I'm ready to settle down.  I appreciate the work that Jerry and others have done to make such a light, fast and yet fully featured OS.  The choices you made in this distro are the same one's I'd choose if I was building it myself.  I even open Gimp and find it's already in Single Window Mode.  Just perfect.  Love the Control Center and the Lite Software app.

Looking forward to what's to come.

My config:
Intel NUC i5
HD Graphics 6000
8 GB RAM

During this development cycle, the open source software community lost a pioneering visionary. Linux Lite dedicates this release in honor, and to the memory of Ian Murdock, founder of Debian.
Do you remember the company Ian was working for the last month of his life?
Docker, in which the late Ian Murdock was hired only a month before he abruptly "insane and committed suicide."
To this day, more than 100 days after the event, there is no new information about his beatings, detention and then "suicide" ... family is not sounding, friends are silent, although there is evidence that shortly before death, Ian claimed to reveal the information that drastically change the image of the open-source system.
Well, that company is on the list, with all the official documents on the modalities of investment
