Title: Linux Lite 2.8 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on January 12, 2016, 08:46:10 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.8 Beta is now available for testing. The star of this release is the Hardware Enablement Stack, 3.19 based Kernel offering greater hardware support. This release marks the end of the Series 2 release cycle. It's been quite a journey. Our evolution in what we offer people is due in large part to our wonderful, valuable community. Most of the features that end up in Linux Lite came from your suggestions, your feedback. Linux Lite 2.8 Beta is a continuation of that symbiosis between developers and community. During this development cycle, the open source software community lost a pioneering visionary. Linux Lite dedicates this release in honor, and to the memory of Ian Murdock, founder of Debian.

Just an observation... FYI
When I clicked on the download 2.8 64bit link above,
the download starts, On the Sourceforge download page.
The actual Green download button, says 2.6 - 32bit
But Chrome is showing it is downloading file 2.8-beta - 64bit

Downloading now.

Hi Jerry,

As per my post no immediate updates were available after install from live usb. (2.8 is installed on another drive)

I found this very unusual.

Installed and running for the last several hours, I restarted the system a few times, installed updates, and several programs, virtualbox included.
Virtual machine works fine, the install of virtual box still doesn't provide the gui, which could be problematic for new users. No issues to report, everything so far works as expected.  :)

Can you please elaborate?

I installed virtual box from Lite Software, but it didn't show up in the menu until I installed the virtualbox-qt package from synaptic.

I'm assuming you installed from Lite Software? I just installed from Lite Software and it installed no problem without any additional packages needed.

On a side note the other softwares installed were: Chrome, File and Folder search, Games pack, restricted extras, video editing software, and webcam software. The thought occurs that one of those may interfere with the virtual box install, so I thought I better let you know what they were.

Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

My last statement was not clear on the fact that all of the software listed was installed from Lite Software at the same time as virtual box.

Just for clarity.

Thanks avj, I installed all of those at once and still got the VirtualBox menu entry in System.

I don't know if this is an issue or not, but after running Install Updates again this morning, I noticed there were 3 packages held back and not upgraded. The 3 packages were:

linux-generic-lts-vivid
linux-headers-generic-lts-vivid
linux-image-generic-lts-vivid

Thus far, I've only tested 2.8 on a Live USB.
32 and 64 bit drivers seemed good (minus broadcom  :P)
1 thing I noticed, on the netbook, closing the lid and reopening comes back to a typical log on prompt but without a log on, blank/nothing.. and having to restart.
Not sure if normal since LL boots with no logon or something else..
Just an observation thus far... I'll install this evening and update with any, but expecting smooth sailing  8)

Must be a lot of people testing just not posting.  The seed for 2.8 beta 64 bit is 3 times as much as 2.6 64 bit.

So I fully installed on the Mini (netbook) wiped out the previous install and formated.. Figured I clean up the let me try's and residuals...
The only noticeable difference I recall from previous, is that it refers to the OS as Ubuntu and not Linux Lite...
Not a biggie - just noticed. i.e. the prompt was "Install Ubuntu alongside them"

I chose the "something else" option..
Install was smooth and didn't very long (I opted to not install updates during install)

Post install, ran updates (no errors) and checked drivers..
Graphic, Sound and internal NIC all good - WiFi (Broadcom) still needed manual intervention.. Under"Install Drivers" there was driver listed - but this connection speed fluctuated. I reverted and used the driver in synaptic (b43-fwcutter)

Thus far all good..
I have noticed boot up time has reduced, slightly but I noticed  ;D

That's common with a lot of Ubuntu based distros, the boot screen hides the restart message.

To ayman:

The brightness function works on 2.8 for me, but it is [Fn]+Left arrow or [Fn]+right arrow.

[Fn]+Up arrow or [Fn]+Down arrow controls the speaker volume.

You may want to check to make sure you have the right keyboard layout selected.

Maybe my stuff... but my arrow keys have separate FN functionality..
Up/Down = Page Up/Down
L/R = Home/End

For screen brightness = FN F4/F5 to decrease or increase brightness

Another update in-regard to 2.8 32bit and Broadcom Wireless..
Quote
I reverted and used the driver in synaptic (b43-fwcutter)
WiFi was more stable although only yielding 36 Mb/s, didn't see higher or lower for that matter..
So I tried installing from Synaptic;
Code: [Select]
bcmwl-kernel-sourceI can get 54Mb/s but it will fluctuate as low as 11Mb/s (sitting in one spot)

Not sure if kernel related..

Thanks firenice03. Driver performance can vary kernel to kernel, driver to driver.

I purchased this ASUS netbook to use for college and I looked for a very lightweight distro due the device's limited performance. I'm actually satisfected with my choice for LL.

I started use LL in version 2.6_64 (december, 2015), before I used Xubuntu since 2008. I was surprised for a 3.13 kernel in the system, then 2.8 comes with a 3.19 kernel. Why not a 4 version? I think it's would be more interesant for much reasons.

Thank's

If you want a 4. series kernel, go here - http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite/pool/main/l/lite-kernel/ we do offer them for people who need them. Newer kernels drop older hardware support, this is the reason why shipping with the latest kernel is a bad idea when you're also trying to target older machines.

@ayman,

What make and model is your Laptop.??
I have seen/read some type's of IBM & Samsung have issues with certain F & Functions keys.

On my HP-15 TS
F2/3 Brightness Up/Down , F7 Mute , F8/F9 Vol Up/Down , F12 Toggle WiFi On/Off all work with no tweaks.

If this can't be resolved for you in oher ways, do what I did. My brightness keys work but I only get like 5 levels (should be 20). It has to do with Lenovos weird Fn Keys and the Intel graphics driver I can't use.

Install xbacklight:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xbacklight
Go to the main menu and search for keyboard, open the 'Keyboard' program and go to 'Application Shortcuts'.
Bind unused key combos to these to commands:

To increase brightness by 2% (I used [Alt] + [+(NumPad)])
Code: [Select]
xbacklight -inc 2
To decrease brightness by 2% (I used [Alt + [-(NumPad)])
Code: [Select]
xbacklight -dec 2

Today while installing a package in synaptic (Install/Remove Software), I noticed if you view details while changes are being made it shows the following.

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks", at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 96, <> line 1.
Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks", at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 96, <> line 1.

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks", at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 114, <> line 1.

I used the quick filter and searched for clearlooks and found the package "gtk2-engines" and installed it. After installing the package the above listed warnings no longer show when installing packages.

There is another warning that shows, but it is a bug in Ubuntu according to a google search I did.

Just ran inxi -Fxz in a terminal and the distro name is showing as Ubuntu.

Code: [Select]
System:    Host: acr-aoa-150 Kernel: 3.19.0-33-generic i686 (32 bit, gcc: 4.8.2)
Desktop: Xfce 4.11.8 (Gtk 2.24.23) Distro: Ubuntu 14.04 trusty

All updates have been done from Install Updates.

System Information shows the correct information I guess this is something with inxi not the system.
