Title: Linux Lite 2.6 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on August 07, 2015, 03:53:25 AM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.6 Beta is now available for testing. After months of dedicated development by the team and outsourced developers, we're proud to announce the release of the Linux Lite Control Center. Linux Lite Control Center aims to provide one central location for everything that you needed to configure your computer. We're also pleased to announce the inclusion of Systemback, a versatile tool that makes it easy to create backups of the system and the users configuration files. Linux Lite is now deployed across large networks and systems, Systemback allows the creation of a custom version of Linux Lite that can then be deployed to multiple machines in a given scenario. See below for more information on both of these new applications in Linux Lite.

As usual you still get the latest Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Wine (via Lite Software) and Gimp.

Changelog:
Firefox 39.0
LibreOffice 5.0
Base: 14.04.3
New Wallpapers.
New Lite Welcome.
New root terminal theme.
Updated Help Manual.
Added Linux Lite Control Center - provides one central location for everything you need to configure your computer.
Added Systemback - system back up and OS creation tool.
Added Disks - easy to use partition, hard drive and SSD configurator.
Added Crtl+Alt+Del - brings up logout/restart/shutdown dialogue.
Added VLC Browser Plugin.
Added Dark theme - Zukitwo Dark Reloaded.
Latest WhiskerMenu.

Introducing the Linux Lite Control Center - The Linux Lite Control Center was created with new folk to linux in mind. We wanted to build an application that was one central location for everything that you needed to configure your computer. We recognise that it is sometimes hard to find where things are on a linux based operating system. Lite Control Center aims to address that dilemma. Built much like a web page, Lite Control Center has a menu on the left as categories, and within those categories buttons that launch whichever application you are wanting to use. Lite Control Center is currently considered beta and we would value your feedback on this application before Linux Lite 2.6 Final is released. Lite Control Center can be found on the taskbar next to the terminal icon.

Systemback - During the 2.6 development cycle, we asked the community which system restore tool they favoured the most and why. After receiving excellent feedback on social media and the Forums, the community chose Systemback to be included in Linux Lite 2.6. Systemback is extremely versatile. You can easily restore the previous state of your computer, perform system copying, system installation and Live system creation. This is especially useful for those wanting to deploy their custom version of Linux Lite across multiple machines, something the community has been asking for.

New Dark Theme - To apply, go to Menu, Settings, Appearance. Select Zukitwo Dark Reloaded. Then go to Menu, Settings, Window Manager. Select Zukitwo Dark Reloaded. Log out/in to apply the new theme.

What kind of Laptop specific updates are there going to be made in the 2.6 edition?
Missing the ability to shut and open the laptop screen without turning off the external screen (or putting it to sleep-even if the xfce4 power manager is not set to do that).

Installed it on a spare hard drive on my generic HP laptop.  All is working well except Systemback.  I can create a restore point but when I try to create a live system it's no joy as all the buttons are not available.  It sees the USB media just fine but I can't create anything.

Disregard.  I rolled back the kernel and it appears to be working.

Here's the hardware info:

Do what I do, edit the files for the bootsplash to make it look like you want.  They are located at:

/lib/plymouth/themes/liteboot

All I do is make the background darker and I'm good to go.  You'll need admin access to work with these files.

I really like Systemback and it works well.  I have 2 laptops with very similar hardware and once I got LL 2.6 setup and configured on one of them, I ran Systemback and made a live system and put it on a USB drive.  I then installed that system on the other laptop and it went smoothly.  I take care of a number of computers at my place and this will really speed up installations...

Can I use Lite Upgrade from the control Centre to move to 2.6, or must I wait until it is no longer a beta before this will work?

You have to wait for the final on September 1st.

Hi Jerry,

... Super :)

Will do some testing and get back to you in case of any issues (hoping to be helpful).
What do you think about including a f.eg a default LL Conky script (+conky manager) ? Could open an internal contest for fun and choose best 3 ?
Thanks for including Systemback ... saved me quite a few times in the past ( I use it regularly to keep my Custom smoking gun LL iso ready on USB )
[/size]Thanx to allBest regards, Cirimax

@cirimax, right from the first version of LL, I seriously considered including conky as a Sidebar (like in Windows) but eventually discarded the idea as we need to appear clean and light, less clutter. Thanks for the suggestion though.

How did you get the 3.19.0-25-generic kernel in there?

How did you get the 3.19.0-25-generic kernel in there?

Loaded it from Synaptic.  it's listed as a 14.04 kernel and everything works well.  I keep a 3.13 kernel installed just for safety.

Also took 10 minutes, finally, to get the Beats Audio working and it's great...

Post by: Jerry on August 11, 2015, 12:13:37 PM
Ok thanks. We won't be including the 14.04.3 hardware stack in LL anymore because we produce our own kernels. This would make upgrades more complicated too.

Is there a difference between GParted and Disks? and is there reason to add Disks when we already have GParted?

and suggestion, instead of having Lite Control Center on the panel, why not have it in the Whisker Menu at the bottom next to the search bar and next to Lock Screen, Switch Users, Log Out and having it replace the old Settings Manager.

Yes, we may drop gparted in the future. Disks has a much more user friendly UI.

LLCC will be considered a major part of LL in the future. It needs to be immediately visible. A Menu entry forces people to go looking for it. You also can't just add it where you said, without porting and recoding the Menu.

I too would like to see the onscreen keyboard. I use onboard, which is very customizable, but wish there was a way to get it onto the login screen. Turns out activating accessibility setting doesn't readily give us access to an onscreen keyboard there either.

Hey Guys!

My quick take on the 2.6 beta is live on Youtube.

Nice video and review. Few things to say on it, firstly... omg a reviewer with GOOD audio lol. This is such an obvious thing and kudos on having nice sound/mic setup. And so cool people like the control center, was alot of work for me doing it alone for a rather long time. (Way better and awesome people have helped improve it ofc) It's cool to see peoples reactions to stuff we make here, it's more motivation for sure. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

BTW not so obvious a feature, try clicking on the feather in the upper left side.

I'm coming back to give Linux Lite another try after briefly giving the 2.2 release a go.  I must say, it's beautiful and functions great, especially for a beta.  I'm currently running xfce, compiz, the Catalyst video driver, and using 4.1 surround audio with no problems.  Nicely done.

LLCC is gorgeous and works great.  Reminds me of how impressed I was with the Mandrake Control Center back in the early 9.* days.  I saw someone else mention having it replace the standard xfce control options in the menu, and I have to agree that having both options may be a bit confusing for new users. The only problem I have with LLCC is that the sidebar and button colors seem to be hard-coded.  This makes it slightly problematic with some gtk themes. Check out this screenshot to see what I mean.  As you can see (or not), the text is unreadable.  This is with the vertex theme, but the High Contrast theme does the same thing.

Again, great work.  And I think your login screen theme is about the slickest I've ever seen.  Bonus points. :)
