Title: Linux Lite 2.4 Final Released
Post by: Jerry on March 31, 2015, 03:21:45 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.4 Final is now available for download.

With the release of Linux Lite 2.4 Final, we continue to evolve into a fully featured, light weight free operating system. Major announcement - there is now an upgrade path on Linux Lite from within the LTS series for each release, update your current install from now until April 2016 with one click, see below for details on this. There are enhancements to Lite Software, Install Updates, Lite Tweaks and Network Share Settings. Bountysource has been a major factor in our ability to enhance our software. By paying developers to help improve our software, we improve the quality and usability of our applications. Disk Encryption and LVM is now supported - see below for details. There is added support for exFAT, Android MTPFS, VPN connections and NTP to name a few. You get the latest Whisker Menu, there's a new default Terminal theme, and the Windows (Super) key now opens the Menu.

I'm incredibly proud of our small, dedicated team, and what we're able to accomplish.

As usual you still get the latest Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Wine (via Lite Software) and Gimp.

Roadmap:  We now have a Roadmap in place. Linux Lite is divided up into 5 interim releases per LTS. See here for details - https://www.linuxliteos.com/code.html#roadmap (https://www.linuxliteos.com/code.html#roadmap)

Changelog:
New Lite Software Menu, System, Lite Software (formerly Install Additional Software and Remove Additional Software).
New Lite Tweaks (formerly Lite Cleaner).
New Install Updates.
New Network Share Settings Menu, System, Network Share Settings (see below for notes on this).
New Wallpapers.
New Terminal theme.
Added support for: VPN connections, Thunar thumbnail previews, Mugshot, exFAT, NTP, LVM, Android MTPFS, Bluetooth.
Added: Reboot, Shutdown options to Live media. Live media now also defaults straight to the Menu.
Fixed: syslog, auth.log not logging.
Fixed: Disk encryption during installation now works.
Fixed Backups popping up randomly.
Latest WhiskerMenu.
Latest version of the Help Manual.
Latest Lite Welcome.
Windows key (Super key) opens the Menu (not in the Live version).
Disabled Screen Off and Screensaver.
Removed obsolete PPA's.

Lite Software - Formerly Install Additional Software and Remove Additional Software, Lite Software combines all of these features into one tool.
Install Updates - Now with an easy to follow GUI interface.
Network Share Settings - Formerly Network Share Settings with 2 sub menus, this is now combined into one Menu link with a new GUI interface.

Lite Upgrade: You can now upgrade your Linux Lite install to the latest version. A HUGE thank you to misko for helping with this code, arguably one of the more complex pieces we have worked on, but now that the framework is in place, adding future code will be a lot easier.

Some things to be aware of when upgrading:

- Your current home folder config files are backed up before the upgrade finishes, that means some of the upgrade features that changes the way you have things, can be restored to the way you had it, eg. the terminal theme.
- Menu order: eg. Network Share Settings drops to the bottom of the System Menu. From Linux Lite 3.0 onwards, we will create all of our Menu links which will prevent most Menu's from not showing alphabetically at times. For now, you can use Menu, Settings, Main Menu to reorder things but be careful, do not click on Restore System Configuration.

Back up locations are:

/home/user/.llupgradebackup/2.4
/etc/skel/.llupgradebackup/2.4

So if you want to restore any of your original config's that's where they'll be. You must restore to both locations. (for advanced users)

- If you have a custom terminal theme, this will change when you run Lite Upgrade (see above if you wish to keep your original theme)

To upgrade: Install the lite-upgrade-series2 package:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series2 -y
Upgrading Linux Lite from one version in a Series to the next is simple. Each new Series of Linux Lite is released every 2 years, and then supported for 5 years, otherwise known as LTS (Long Term Support) eg. Linux Lite 2.0 - Linux Lite 2.8 is Series 2, Linux Lite 3.0 would be the start of Series 3.

Upgrading can only occur within a Series. For example you can upgrade from Linux Lite 2.0 to Linux Lite 2.4, but not from Linux Lite 2.0 to Linux Lite 3.0. If you don't have Lite Upgrade installed open a Terminal and type in: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-seriesX where -seriesX represents that series. Then to update from within a Series, click on Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade.

Follow the on screen prompts, reboot at the end of the process and you will be completely up to date on Linux Lite.

Disk encryption during install:

Disk encryption and LVM should now work when selecting the Installation Type part of the install wizard. When you start your computer (post installation), during the boot process your computer will appear to stop booting, this is not the case. In the background it is waiting for you to enter your encryption password, the one you set up during the Linux Lite installation. You can either type your password blindly or press F4 to see the background text. Once you've entered your password your computer will continue the rest of the boot up process. Do not choose 'Encrypt home folder' during the install, this is a different option under the Who are you? section of the install and does not work yet.

Hey guy's

ok so i used the Lite Upgrade, which is cool and it worked, it saved all my files and setting, etc.

But I ran into one problem tho and it's with using Lite Software. ok so i click on Lite Software to open it up and it asks for my password, so i type my password in and after that instead of getting a popup of Lite Software, I get a popup of Updates Sources and it asks me if i want to update my software sources yes or no.  If i click yes then it runs the process of what Install Updates would do.

I don't know if i did something wrong or if Lite Upgrade broke it,  but i thought you guys should know.

Hello!

I see what you mean, but I don't think it's a bug. I THINK they're just calling up an apt-get update to make sure you get the latest version of whatever you're wanting to install...

In the picture example you showed for Lite Software, you get options for Install Software, Remove Software and Exit, but for me I don't get those options, it just goes straight to Update Sources and if i click yes, it goes through an update and after that i get a popup Error saying Updating Sources has failed and i click ok to close and that's it.

I'm sorry if i'm missing something or if it's a bug???

I think it would be fair to say you guys ROCK.  Updated without any hiccups.  As a matter of fact, it removed my previous screw up (when I previously updated and answered 'yes' to updating a PPA or something which changed something from LL 2.2 to Ubuntu 14.04?).

I was using the 2.4 Beta since it was released as a every-day desktop.
I typed
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series2 -y and done, all updates were applied.

checked my linux version
Code: [Select]
$ cat /etc/*-release

Why it is 2.2?

Hi,

According to your description you only did the first step (installing the upgrade script).
Now you need to actually run it as Jerry pointed out:

click on Menu, Settings, Lite Upgrade.

In saying this:

1) The upgrade of a test box went fine except that Linux Lite Welcome error message.

2) I've also booted the 2.4 live CD 64bit, didn't play around much though. However I got this:
linux@linux:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=trusty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Lite 2.2"

So it still shows Linux Lite 2.2

3) For the future I would suggest to put the upgrade script/ menu entry under System, not Settings as it has nothing to do with the current user settings but is a full system upgrade.

PS: If any of these topics should be created in a different category, please let me know and I'll create a post there.

OK. I forgot to go to "Lite Upgrade"

1Installed script ... ok
2Lite Upgrade under Settings menu

Quote
Upgrade complete.

Don't forget to restart your computer
to complete the upgrade.

.......... OK 100% done
Code: [Select]
$  cat /etc/*-release

Not sure where to put this topic. Upgrade on 2.2 to 2.4 on laptop went well. if any of your program dont show up in menu just got to main menu and put check mark next to them...(Problem on desktop upgrade from 2.4 beta to 2.4 dist. unable to set light locker settings.) It just flashes on the screen for a second thats the only problem i'v had on the upgrade. if any one has a solution im here.

If me. I'd start a new thread titled "Light Locker crashes in Linux Lite 2.4 after upgrade" and in my post.
Run light locker command launch through terminal as user and see what error messages come up and post that
in my thread.

That is what I would do.

If running 2.4 Beta, I assume I have to do nothing ... normal update cycle will bring me up to 2.4 release, is this correct?

By the way, awesome release, thanks all!

Absolutely wonderful upgrade. Loving the lite tweaks, and new wall papers are very nice as well. Only issue I'm having is videos on youtube are now lagging behind audio, running a bit choppy. Not sure what is happening. After upgrade to 2.4, then running updates this began to happen. Other than that the system runs fine. Thanks guys....

Hi and a BIG thanks to all. :D :D

Did the Lite upgrade on my netbook (32 bit) and everything thing seems fine, (including Light Locker).

Did a full install on my laptop, because I required 64 bit, again, so far, seems fine, except Light Locker, same problem as previous poster.
If previous poster starts a new thread, I will post there.

Very happy and again a big thanks for all the time and effort.

Anybody tried upgrading from 2.0 to 2.4? Any problems? Any advantages?

Not sure if i want to move to 2.4 since everything is perfect in 2.0. Seems to only be some GUI on Linux Lite apps other than screen saver in 2.4  which I don't use anyway.

Like Jerry has sad before if it ain't broke don't fix it.  8)

Congrats, great job.
Used the upgrade but got an error at the end that the welcome screen couldnt start..but guess that is because i have it disabled in autostart.
Also downloaded the iso file.
Like TMG1961 I had disabled the welcome screen and got an error box at the end of an upgrade: "There was an error while (new line) Seting lite-welcome to autostart on first boot!" Closing this offered reboot - done. Noted Grub still showed LL 2.2. Started OK. Desktop looks OK. System information says LL 2.4. File types which previously failed to load by double clicking on NAS file listing now load OK. Various packages previously added run OK. So all-in-all, great! Far better than a manual re-install. Thanks.

I updated packages and installed lite-upgrade-series2. I also did update and upgrade after that. I am having problem wuth the lite-upgrade-series2 tool. The "Lite Upgrade" item throws an error message, seems like it tries to back /etc/skel without sudo. What's the command line equivalent of the upgrade process?

@Coastie

Just upgraded one of my systems from LL2.0 to LL2.4
Upgrade process run without any issues.
So far no problems running the system. Didn't do a lot of testing yet though.
Advantages? The improvements have been listed before. But at the end it depends what you're using the system for, doesn't it?

Seems there was an oversight in the 64bit, llver is reporting as 2.2
The quick fix is:

Code: [Select]
sudo sed -i "s/Linux Lite 2.*/Linux Lite 2.4/g" /etc/llver
Cheers misko :)

I've fixed the 64bit iso and re-uploaded it. I wasn't comfortable leaving this as an issue for months when a fix made more sense and causes less confusion in the end :)

Seems there was an oversight in the 64bit, llver is reporting as 2.2
The quick fix is:

Code: [Select]
sudo sed -i "s/Linux Lite 2.*/Linux Lite 2.4/g" /etc/llver
Cheers misko :)
Post release oversight for Linux Lite 2.4 64bit users - please see this post for the quick easy fix - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-software/linuxlite-2-4-64bit-thinks-it%27s-2-2-after-update-won%27t-boot/msg13465/#msg13465 (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-software/linuxlite-2-4-64bit-thinks-it%27s-2-2-after-update-won%27t-boot/msg13465/#msg13465)

jeff@jeff-RF800AA-ABA-SR2011WM-NA680:~$ cat /etc/llver
Linux Lite 2.4
 I applied the quick fix earlier and then then ran the upgrade tool. now showing the above, but still shows 2.2 in system info. This was on a clean install 14 hours ago.

... Upgrading Linux Lite from one version in a Series to the next is simple. ...

Put in my vote on Spatry's forum on "Which Ubuntu base operating system is the best?

On 4/2/15, eronis stated " ... I've researched to how can I upgrade. I've learned there is no way to upgrade (Linux Lite 2.2). I can just have an fresh install. ..."

I posted that he could now, pasted Jerry's instruction on how to do it and concluded with

Linux Lite gets my vote as its motto says, "Simple, fast, and free" and I would add always improving!

Upgrade route described above worked smoothly without problems. From LL2.0 32bit to 2.4 32bit. BIG thank you to all.!!
Both systems as per profile now successfully upgraded.

It would be cool to add right-click mount image in Linux Lite 2.6. Or at least add a tutorial for that in official Manual.

Btw, I tried to create a new topic, asking how to mount a multi-track CD (multiple .bin files) with a .cue file. But there's no button for that anymore?

There are tutorials for nautilus, but nautilus is a file manager, right? So I need something for Thunar.

Wonderful, thank you all! :)

Upgraded LL2.0 to 2.4 on my eeePC901 and everything is working ok. Only glitch was that the terminal screen settings were not retained. I like black text size 14 on white background, but terminal opened with white text size 10 on black background - no problem to reset to my preferences.  8)

Hello!

Jerry, I know you and the team must be proud about all the interest in the new version. Given all the distros available out there, I'd call those stats a very good response.

I hope to see a LOT of new people in the forums introducing themselves in the next little bit. You really DO get a whole lot more out of it when you participate...

Yeah my Lite Upgrade from 2.2 to 2.4 ended up breaking my Lite Software, 2.4 was also buggy and had issues, I guess I just ran into bad luck with using the Lite Upgrade.

But yeah I did a fresh install of 2.4 and everything is fine and is working now, Lite Software is working and even my Light Locker Settings is working now ( I couldn't get that working in 2.2).

So yeah, thanks Jerry and thanks to the Linux Lite team for all the hard work, Linux Lite just keeps getting better and better.

I've used the 2.4 upgrade on several machines now. Only one failed, and I may have had something to do with that. As it did for you, a clean 2.4 install fixed things.

So yeah, thanks Jerry and thanks to the Linux Lite team for all the hard work, Linux Lite just keeps getting better and better.

Yes, they have all excelled on this one - which, as unpaid volunteers, says a lot right there...

Try this:

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/lsb-release
under "DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION" it should say "Linux Lite <version number>"

Hello, Stephen.

Welcome to the Linux Lite forums. I'm glad your upgrade went smoothly for you.

Very few people have had any problems with upgrading. I don't think upgrades get any easier or faster on any other OS than LL's are with Lite Upgrade. Some of that is from LL being based on an LTS version of Ubuntu, which means far fewer changes between point versions...
